Assuming we keep 5 & 9, who are you picking?

What’s your pick Mouseymoo?

Glad you asked.

I've got two preferred combinations, and I'll list them in order;

Preference 1 combo;

Smith/Travalia - Pace, drive, tenacity and agility. I see Smith as the perfect accumulator and distributor who will deliver it to our forwards with aplomb and Travaglia a perfect accomplice being a jack Russell in defence running up and down between the arcs providing much needed pressure.

Preference 2 combo;

Langford/Allen. For all of Langfords silk, skill, grunt and iq you've got Allen's freak athleticism and flare to compliment.

Smith and Travalia for me.

If Jagga gets through to our first pick it’s him 100%. Then ideally a Bo Allan or Josh Smillie.

If not Jagga then I’d go Langford and then Reid at 9.

In both scenarios you get a smaller, consistent ball winner with good hand and foot skills and pair him with a big bodied athlete with a high ceiling.

No matter what I’d be going 2 mids.

Smith or Langford at 5 - who ever slips.

Travaglia or Allan at 9 for speed and power off half back and potential mid.

5 - Langford just over Tauru. Really hoping one of them is available

9 - Hannaford. This kid is legit. Speedy, explosive, one touch, physical. He’ll be a quality small forward who transitions to a good midfielder once he builds his tank.

83 - Tye Hourigan

As far as I can tell, Hourigan didn't nominate, so pick another smokey

Toss up between Smith and Langford at 5 such different players. I think I would lean towards Langford has just a hint of Bont about him.
Smith would likely go to the Tigers at 6.
We would be left with either Smillie, Travagalia or Reid at 9 after the 2 Saints selections.

5 - Smith, next best Langford

9 - Smilie, next best Hotton

Trading into the draft to take a kid who won't play for the bulk of the year would be an interesting call

Hotton would be a bold call for sure. I'm thinking longer term though. I think our windows shut now and we're building the core of our next premiership team.

Trac did his ACL preseason and missed entire first year. Didn't stop him becoming a superstar and Norm Smith medalist. Hotton is a talent, but how talented is hard to judge.

AFL clubs are apparently super keen to draft him and he’s not keen, got to respect that.

83 - Ajang Kuol mun (Geelong vfl)

5 Harry Armstrong - DL meltdown will trump the second coming. Picket to lead the the insurrection.

9 Xavier Lindsay - no idea really won the Morrish medal.

83 Slim Dusty

God I hope not (coming from someone who has very little idea, so chances are they end up the 2 best players in the draft 🤣).

Mine would be Draper and Langford.

5. Draper/Smith/Langford in that order

9. Tauru (who’ll be gone) so Allen or Travaglia

so what’s your bet on who we’ll pick at 5 and 9?

smith or langford a genuine 50/50 for me

anyone but allan at 9 purely because i dont want to get heartbroken by another WA boy (Tobie please)

Out of curiousity, if Richmond take someone other than Lalor, where does he go? Does everyone in here flip to him?

Feel like this is massively likely. And it’s FOS instead. Minor possibility for Smith.

Carl can’t go past Lalor if he’s there.

If Rich go for Smith. We might be FOS.

Personally, I like FOS and then Langford as the two best players in the draft.

I think it will be Smith & Travaglia, and would be happy with that result.

Langford and Bo Allan.

Both add size and some difference to our midfield.

Double take

5 - Armstrong

Loves blowing his own trumpet, does a half decent moonwalk and wants to win at any cost.

9 - Xavier Lindsay

Has a great Australian novel in him or as a fallback can paint nudes.

83 - Slim

Would be a great addition, immediately enhances club culture. Get him in.

The two who have made an impression in my mind are Smith and Smillie. Might be a bit optimistic to imagine both making it to 5 and 9, respectively, but that's where my head is.

Last year I was disappointed we didn't take Curtin, but I am thrilled about the prospects for Windsor. I'm pretty chill about it all. This ain't no Prendergast sausage factory we're running.

5 - Harvey Langford

9 - Xavier Lindsay

A strong combination of inside/outside, both great kicks and one can float forward and the other can play behind the ball when they aren’t in the midfield.

From what Jason Taylor and Tim Lamb have said, they will take best available talent.

For pick #5 I am thinking either Jagga Smith or Harvey Langford. Both amazingly talented players and a lot will depend upon who Richmond,  North Melbourne, Carlton and Adelaide take before us.

For pick #9 I am thinking one of four players. It could be Xavier Lindsay who is an elite kick and very underrated, it could be Murphy Reid who oozes talent with his decision making skills, it could be Josh Smillie who has the potential to be the next Marcus Bontempelli or, lastly, it could be Taj Hotton, who showed he is supremely talented before he got injured earlier in the season. A lot will also depend upon who Richmond and St. Kilda choose with their picks.

Who ever the Demons pick, I have huge faith in Jason Taylor and the rest of the Recruitment Team who I am sure will do their due diligence.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show.
