I don't see much of the WA boys but saw Luke Urquhart tested well at the Combine. Likely to go in the main draft @Pennant St Dee?

I’m not sure whether he goes main draft or rookie, there are big questions on his kicking

How and why did we even get this pick?

JT might go with a youngster who shows definite AFL qualities in his footy IQ, goal sense, pace and run as well as his ability to produce the special.

I’d recommend Ned Bowman might fit the mould.  Definitely has some X factor.  His classic “screamer” mark certainly showed his talent.  He’s not laconic but hard working and talented.
Draft combine results also impressed.
Ran flat 3.0secs in 20 metre sprint to show his pace (top 20 ranked) and I think he did a 6:35 in the 2km trial.

Ned Bowman shapes as a potential available later draft pick and could appeal for the Dees.

What’s not to like? I know it’s just a highlight reel, but he looks on par with some of the higher preferred choices from this little grab. Great goal sense, pace, good one grab mark, good kick. Like I said, what’s not to like? Why isn’t he ranked higher?

Assuming we don't split pick 5 or 9, I see this pick being somewhat needs based.

We go two mids early we'll probably go tall.

Go tall and mid we probably go another mid-sized player.

With Rivers potentially shifting to the midfield full-time and Salem getting on, I think we could use some depth in our medium defenders department.

Bowey and McVee make up the other medium defenders with the later potentially earmarked for a future midfield role as well given his trial runs there late in the season. AMW shows promise but not sold he makes it long term with defensive IQ and decision making needing work.

Given that, I'd like to suggests two players that could potentially fit the mold.

1. Lachie Jacques

184cm defender from Geekong Falcons. May be off the board at this point, but Lachie provides excellent reading of the ball and is a strong mark, intercepts and spoils well and also neat by foot and was often the designated kicker out of defence for Geelong.  Provides a lot of run from the backline and works hard to be involved in the next chain.

2. Lucca Grego

184cm mid/defended from Western Jets. Played mainly in the midfield for the Jets where he shows toughness over the ball and has a burst of speed. Caught my eye playing as a defender from Vic Metro where I thought he took to the role well and impressed me with use ball use and his competitiveness.

Keep in mind in the video above is played at Williamstown oval which always has shocking wind conditions and makes his ball use look poor. Unfortunately can't find any other videos thus far.

Would love to give JT spin the wheel for a genuine diamond in the rough!! It’s a very deep draft and there is excellent youngsters all through this years group

With picks being used in all the father son and academies matched bids, we might see the last round and final picks being again around 65.
That’s where I’d like to see the Dees give an opportunity to at least one more youngster (as well as to 5&9).  There’s talent right through this draft. Here’s some late draft pick options

Oliver Warburton. Hbf. Murray
Will Hayes. Mid. WA Claremont.
Gabriel Stumpf  CHF . Northern
Patrick Retschko. Hbf/mid. Oakleigh
Oliver Depaoli-Kubank. Running mid. Tassie.
Noah Mraz. CHB. Dandenong.
Luke Kennedy . Mid. Sandringham
Cody Angove. Running mid. WA Claremont
Kade Herbert. Mid/hff. SA WWT eagles
Jett Hasting. Hbf. SA WWT eagles

I agree that Jack Henderson (Mid/utility. Werribee) is a likely mature aged option given his excellent 2023 and 2024.  However it is more likely that the Cats use one of their 3 draft picks to grab him   Henderson is a local and the Cats like getting in mature ready to go players.

Please god give us Stumpf

No.

He hasn't been nominated as a father son yet and I'll be surprised if he is even drafted in the end.

@Nascent Lachie Jacques should go around pick 40.  He won’t get past Geelong as he’s probably their number 1 target in this draft.  Agree he’s good.  Lucca Grego might be the one at “83”.  Tough youngster with good skills. Grew up in Qld and has done rugby tackling as a youngster so likes contested work.

My preference is Oliver Warburton if he’s available

Great name - very eloquent

MOTY contender 2024 APS Caulfield Grammar v Brighton

Superb year for Bushrangers - 7 games , averaged 27 disposals- including huge game versus Power in wildcard game

Very good form for Vic country

Dare to dream

Warburtons got some nice traits, but I'm not a wrap for his decision making and disposal under pressure. Lacks some composure and runs himself into trouble often. If that aspect of his game can be approved then could prove go be a decent rebound defender.

Any news on Riak Andrew and Roy George??

Riak Andrew is still a late option.
Roy George will definitely not get drafted.  Not in any universe will that happen.  A nice cameo at Casey but he’s nowhere near any AFL level by a long way.

Smokey at “83”… even considering guys like Davidson and Bice, I think SANFL Norwood star Billy Cootee is probably the best mature aged player not currently on an AFL list. Certainly my best pick from the SANFL. He has the right competitive nature.  Good skills.  Athletic.  Can rotate midfield to forward to defence.  Certainly stood up under pressure in SANFL GF and in state league interstate games.  I thought he was good for Essendon VFL last year and surprised he didn’t get a rookie chance.

Another Smokey … George Grey.
This would be a gutsy call.
Ex Casey Demon, excelled at Frankston Dolphins in 2024.  Averages 24 possessions a game.  Had huge 30 possession games v Dogs and v Suns at end of 2024 against many AFL listed opponents.  Simply he’s too good for the VFL.
imv Grey is definitely AFL quality.
His run & skill is the equal of many half backs or running mids in the AFL.
Left foot. Right foot. He kicks extremely well on both.

Oliver Withers is someone worth investing effort on. Though I believe he would be a better rookie,

Many believed he was best on ground for Belconen Magpies in their Grand final victory (ACTAFL) as a 17 year old. He also dominated the rising stars league B&F the year before as a 16 year old.

I believe last year he was signed by a VFL club but did his knee in the pre-season.

Was part of GWS academy, but not sure if still is post injury.

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
