Phil Carmen, Brent Crosswell, Graham Malloy, John Tillbrook ah the list goes on.

Aside from a fleeting post flag period we've never really been a top destination club. 

But we've never really been a bottom destination club either. Picking up our Mays, Levers etc. Top half of the league in terms of destinations, maybe more like a trip to Parramatta instead of Paris.

I think Dan Houston answered the question for us.

Lever and  May are really the last big gets I can think of. 
 

I remember watching the doco “show me the money” And they spoke about how our pitch to Cerra was so impressive. Where is that Melbourne demons?

It would be interesting to see a list of ‘big fish’ that have changed clubs and contributed to success to the clubs they have gone to over the last 10-20 years. 
Our flag was mostly built on recruiting (draft) and development apart from May and Lever. Do we class Ben Brown as a ‘big fish’ at the end of 2020?  
Tigers got Lynch after a dominant 2017-2018. Cats Danger and Jezza. Pies and Lions?

I can’t help but feel that the Grundy deal has hurt us in so many ways, the way that it unfolded has tarnished our reputation quite a bit. Thank goodness we have JT bringing in quality each year, really need to top up this year.

Was a pretty ordinary answer to a question that should be a layup. Lamb is supposed to be the guy selling the club to players so they come here and looked like a deer in the headlights when asked why a player should do exactly that.

Lake and Frawley at Hawthorn, Neale at Brisbane come to mind.

Jury still out on JHF at Port and Jackson at Freo.

Wouldn't consider Brown a big fish at all. Was being pushed out by North and we paid cents on the dollar for him, he did enough in 2021 but his best footy was clearly behind him. May and Lever were our big fish.

I have supported this club for 66 yrs, since 1965 we have NOT been a destination club and trhat explains why we have only won one flag since then.

What do you call it when the players we actively pursue choose others clubs over us? Do you disagree with the notion that we're currently struggling to attract talent that can improve our list?

@Mach5  ..  you palm...   but the reality is there ARE destination clubs whether you like it or not.  And we certainly aren't one.

Deal with it... perhaps clench palm and hit harder .... 

We are a destination for the old.. for those past their prime. Probably taken over from Noosa as a destination 

No not right now.

 

 

But we could be very quickly. & I’m fine with that.

There’s always some truth to what reporters report and people in the industry know that, and hence why people like Sam McClure and Tom Morris are still in the job. Like them or not, fact of the matter is, if someone came in and just made up stories they would (a) never last in the industry; and (b) would get sued into oblivion. 

Where there is smoke, there is fire. As someone who re-watched Suits the other week, to quote Harvey Specter: “Get your [censored] together. Winners don't make excuses when the other side plays the game."

Point being, the media is part and parcel. Just gotta get our own backyard in order. Whingeing like Andrew Bassett does nothing but make you seem weak and insecure as both a club and a fanbase.

Big or small, anyone who thinks we don’t have problems are deluded.

I like Goody so this is not intended to be saying he should go.  But outside of sponsorship opportunities (eg big club like collingwood), surfcoast lifestyle / one team town (Geelong) and winning (we were the preferred destination of Cerra in 2021), I think part of what makes up a "destination club" is the gamestyle.

If you look at Collingwood (22-23), Hawthorn (24) etc the winning is most important but it is also about how they win.  Ie coach backing players to take risks.  A lot of it is hype and BS - but clearly players at other clubs eat this up.  

I think Goody is a bit hamstrung by the list he has (which is evolving), the instability around him (don't think that's his doing) and certainly tried to tweak this in the first half of the season this year - but I think he has to continue to work on this.  The setting up a defensive fortress and doing the percentage play makes a team too predictable and seemingly isn't as satisfying for players as well as supporters.
