Sam was killed in Richmond this afternoon when he was crossing the road on his way to work and was hit by a truck.

A great sports writer.

Taken way too soon.Ā

Such sad news.Ā  One of the few great sports journos going around.Ā  Sympathies and condolences go out to his family and friends.Ā  RIP.

Sam always had positive things to say about the MFC. Always. He’s the only reason I watch Midweek Tackle.

This was his most recent Dees article…

This is typical of how Sam reported on us. He was a diehard Doggies fan but he clearly had a soft spot for the Dees.

Years ago I emailed him to thank him for being one of the very few in the media who had our back. He replied saying he was just reporting the truth.

😢

Ā

Far out. So sad

A young man

What a tragedy. I used his Twitter Olympic schedule summaries every day during the Paris games to know what was happening. Seemed like one of the few trustworthy media figures. A horrible accident, thoughts go out to his family, friends and colleagues. You never know what fate has in stall.

Terrible news.

So sad for his family, friends and colleagues.

RIP Sam.

RIP. Very sad and surreal to hear about his passing at such a young age. Ā I also started watching the midweek tackle recently and thought it was a pretty good show, dont always agree with their opinions, but appreciated the way the show was hyper focussed in going through every single story and player and team discussion of the day without the negativity or looseness of other shows. Engaging to watch a footy discussion and he was definitely a good voice to have on there when he discussed his thoughts. Damn, life is precious folks. Hug your loved ones :(

Father was a Dees’ fan until moving to the Bulldogs as club doctor

Gone too soon and such tragic circumstances. RIP young man.

I used these summaries too, they were so handy so you could set yourself for a medal event where the Aussies were a good chance. It was a great idea and initiative by Sam - many followed it.Ā
Horrible news. Live every day to its fullest. So true, you never know if or when your number is up.Ā

Really knocked about by this.

Horrible news. RIP Sam.

He was such an enthusiastic person in general who loved the game and sport in general.

Never heard him say a bad word about the Dees, hearing all these stories now explains why.

R.I.P Sammy loved your approach on the Midweek Tackle and soft spot for the Dees.

An inherently fair and respected journalist. Will be missed. Rest in Peace 😭

Ā Very sad. RIP SamĀ

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

The dominant storyline coming out of Round One for Saturday Night’s clash at Optus Stadium centres on the influence of the big men. The spotlight naturally falls on two elite ruckmen who, five years ago, shared the stage in Melbourne’s memorable premiership triumph.

  • NON-MFC: Round 02

The compromised AFL fixture will get another test this week with the first lot of teams getting a bye after only two matches. Despite this Round 2 starts off with two cracking games as the Hawks host the Swans at the G on Thursday Night and then on Friday Night the Crows host the Bulldogs at Adelaide Oval. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.

Never in doubt!!! In Steven King’s first game at the helm of the Melbourne Football Club, the Dees outlasted Saints in a wild, momentum-swinging thriller at the MCG, running out 13-point winners.
