Looked at an article from 25 March 2024 on the AFL website and it lists our potential out of contract/free agents as

  • Tom McDonald
  • Jake Melksham
  • Adam Tomlinson^
  • Marty Hore*
  • Joel Smith

No mention of Hunter, when he joined us he had 2 years left on his WB contract. Imagine a player in that circumstance would be asking for an extra year to make the move worthwhile/secure as well.

¿Que?

I suspect that discussions might be taking place with Hunter’s management and, at the end of the day, he might be given the opportunity to look at other options if he wants to play game #200.

Lots of stories regarding Hunter enough said..  interesting what the review will show

“Cherry blossoms bloom best in springtime.”

Fragment of ancient text , by anonymous Japanese poet. Believed by scholars to refer to the impermanent nature of  AFL football recruitment and careers. And the unfounded rampant optimism and soon to be turned, capriciousness of football devotees.

...providing a segue for this somewhat apt combo of image and words (though perhaps better on the 'Training Ground?' thread??)

Is Hunter contracted for another year or what's the story there??

Finding mixed information that he's supposedly contracted to 2025..?

Hunter signed a long term contract at Dogs through to 2024.

Is it possible we offered him an extra year through to 2025 as a selling point to get him over. At the time (2022) he was still considered an above average league player.

The Dogs wanted him gone, hence why we paid next to nothing for him. I highly doubt we had to offer him anything to get him across. He wasn’t hot property 😬

I reckon he’s 100% gone. Could be trying to find another club or contemplating retirement, hence why we haven’t delisted him yet

Only 6 likely list places out at the moment. Brayshaw (med ret), BBB (ret) , ANB (going to Crow-ville), JS29, Schache and Tomlinson (UFA).

? one more year … Hore?? Feel for him given injury hit him and led to being delisted, and it might happen all over again

————————————————-

The one more year club… ANW,  KBrown, Verrall, Sestan,  Billings, Fullarton, Spargo, Woey jnr, Kentfield, Tmcd*, Melksham*, Hunter* (could be high turnover at end of 2025)

The two more years club …  Jefferson, Adams, Laurie, McAdam (contracted to 2026) & S.Goodwin

Hope Dees put through two and three year extensions for May, Howes and McVee in the early part of next year.

Hmmmm I guess we won’t be having a big crack at this draft so. Kentfield has already replaced Gus in terms of list spots I think so it’s down to 5.
You’d think we fill take on two rookies, that leaves 3 list spots to be filled and 4 if they delist Hore.

Cant believe we have Hunter for another year. Can we just payout his contract and get him off the list?

Cannot believe after this year from MFC AND CASEY that we are only moving on Schache & Hore as the only delistings.  Tim Lamb deals and some extensions for others is puzzling.

2024 squad = 45. 😭ANB, BBB, Gus, JS, KFW, Schache. Tomlinson likely to go.  So now 38

??? Marty Hore??? Staying or delisted???

Really surprised West Coast delisted Jarmaine Jones.

Quick midfielder half forward who has a nice left foot. Would add a lot of dash and speed across the midfield and half forward area.

Certainly worth a shot imo.

We certainly have a few glaring holes in our list SONS.

Jamaine's now been delisted by two clubs.  There's probably a good reason for that.  Pass.

At times he looked very good. Probably didn’t quite kick goals for his role.  If we had list spots to fill then ok (but unfortunately holding too many cloggers) …  we need spots for young midfielders.  At 25/26 he’s actually better than others like Hunter and Billings on our list.

Our trading policy over the past few seasons has unfortunately misfired badly, landing us with plenty of list cloggers such as Schache, Hunter, Billings, Fullarton and McAdam.

Now I fear we will probably cave in and accept being shafted yet again when ANB's move to South Australia is finalised.

And Casey's dismal performances this season suggest that the hopes being pinned on some of the younger brigade may not be well founded. (I would love to be proved wrong).

If Tim Lamb doesn't get it right this time around, his role must come under serious scrutiny.

Unless the Big Four (Gawn, Petracca, Oliver and May) all avoid serious injury and produce their best, our so-called premiership window may be firmly closed by the end of next season.

That's not being a pessimist, just a realist.

If GWS holds Derksen and Tomo gets to Collingwood, St.Kilda or elsewhere then retaining Hore seems likely to me.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
