Ive been a pretty big defender of Goodwin since forever.

I was actually happy with this presser as he finally didnt defend the team. He is clearly frustrated publically ( FINALLY!) showing some raw emotion about how shizen we are. I dont think hes going to be able to lead us to another flag with his stagnant game plan, nor do i think the current makeup of our players can execute said game plan. we have 4 senior players starting in the midfield every week ( gawn, petracca, viney, oliver) and i dont trust any of them with the ball. this is alarming.

As a dees member, I applaud Simon for what hes done for the football club, and so should our board. Hes brought the greatest enjoyment to us for the past 4 out of 5 years we have seen since forever. The board also must understand its ok to let a coach go because the message isnt sinking in, or the game plan doesnt work for our current crop of players. We arent axing simon because hes no good, we would be changing direction to have fresh eyes. ( if not the coach then a strong coaching panel to assist in the change of game plan)

I for one would love to see him able to turn the ship, but its going to be near on impossible to turn it around unless they manage to finish top 6 next season for him to get another gig here.

A change of coach may not even work for us, but you sure as hell need to show paying members you are willing to try and get better.

If goody doesnt go at end of season Ill put my top dollar on it that half of our coaching panel will be gone.

Goody on 360 tonight. He mentioned learnings twice in a minute and again emphasised intensity. He also talked about being able to play good footy against higher ranked teams but then being inconsistent playing lower level teams. This screams that the players are not mentally engaged and potentially the coaches words are not inspiring anymore. Shock horror.

Garry Lyon said he thought they looked stale against Carlton and very disappointing. He said to Goody that we are too reactive and the Dees aren’t proactive enough. He said we need to mix players in different positions. Shake things up.

“We will leave no stone unturned to get better” said Goodwin. I know one stone which definitely needs to be turned.

I’m well and truly over the spewing of coaching 101 phrases from Goodwin.

On membership: I have been a long-time member and pay for the Trident’s category - so not cheap. I have been to all the games in Melbourne for years and many games in other states. I would also think that I would be one of the most travelled supporters who has laid out more than most in terms time and money to attend games given I live in NSW and fly to the games in Melbourne each week. So I don’t expect anyone would be able to doubt my commitment to the club.

However, I decided today that I can’t be bothered going next Sunday to Marvel (a ground that I dislike and where my reserved seat lapses under my home and away membership). I kept going through the decades of bad years - faithfully. Someone once asked me why I kept turning up when the team loses so by so much so often. I replied: “There is an aesthetic in the struggle” - and that was my approach.

I would, of course, regularly interrogate myself to wonder why supporting a team is so irrational (especially in the context of the MFC). My father supported MFC so I did - a child’s commitment. What is the adult logic in that? I have never successfully answered that question to my own liking. It is what it is, as they say.

At any rate, I am done for the time being. I am sick of the nonsense that the coach pumps out in his weekly media appearances. It is frankly insulting. It is not about getting ‘value for money’. It is about not being part of a scam and the way the coach smoothly shifts between ‘learnings’, ‘it is not about winning’, ‘we are building something’, ‘the game plan is about to be understood’ and all the rest of the corporatised nonsense he gets from some management training seminars or wherever just insults the intellect of the membership.

The lack of response from the senior management who seem to cosy up and enjoy the wine and food on game days but refuse to publicly take responsibility. It is ludicrous that we have an interim leadership who cannot do anything because we are waiting for the real leadership to arrive - when we are in the throes of a football season where key decisions are required and we are performing so intolerably.

So I have decided to not go this weekend and save the travel time and dollars and my happiness.

There is no aesthetic in being scammed by the club any longer.

When October comes up, I will review my long-term membership status - currently I am doubtful I will continue if the senior coach is still there at the head of the scam.

Im a trident member and pay a significant amount to the club, and have been for 20 years. Been a supporter for 50 plus years.

I have rarely missed a home game in all that time including the darkest Neeld era but I've never felt this disinterested in the club. I have not been arzed to go to several games this year due to the direction we are heading and the head in the sand response from the club.

Senior players bar a couple don't give a stuff. Why should I.

Is that Goody’s tomb stone employment at the club? I’d like to see that stone turned, inscribed and polished.

I genuinely think Goody suffers from anxiety when public speaking.

I think that can only explain why he repeats the same one liners over and over again. I don't think there's another coach within the AFL that repeats themselves as often, spitting out the same rhetoric, one liners and answers. It's almost as if he's in a freeze and simply doesn't have the ability to expand on any question in those moments. He goes into this automated mode of speak.

I just think it's so disappointing for members and supporters who are so over his words. 'working incredibly hard'. 'Nowhere near the level'. 'Leave no stone unturned'. Blah blah blah.

The players are over it. You don't have a senior core group of premiership players rock up with a different attitude every second game on repeat of you're motivated by your coach. Goody has lost the players and imo he is now showing those desperate signs he did in 2019 and 20. Afraid to throw magnets around, plays his favourites in the same positions, no rest for Gawn, no blooding or trialling players from Casey.

It's just desperation to save his job at this point.

An Essendon supporter rang up Lyon on SEN this morning to congratulate him on asking some relatively tough questions on Goodwin last night, and wished the media would do the same with B Scott.

I know that Lyon can't be brutal on Goodwin as they're essentially "AFL 360" colleagues, and Goodwin's doing the show a favour by sharing his AFL coaching insights. So his criticism that the club looked stale and uninspiring last week, we've lost to a bunch of nobody clubs this year, and the fact that we're not willing to change things up aside from Bowey going forward late was pretty good IMO.

If you want to know where we're at under Goody right now, watch that first quarter from Carlton and know he couldn't motivate the team to beat that

I was too invested in the game being tight on Saturday night to really focus on the fact we were somehow struggling against a team of potatoes. And even though I think we were the better team on the night, on reflection I am actually angry about the performance. But that's not uncommon. It was disappointing, we lost, and shouldn't have.

But one moment in particular really struck me on Saturday night. I spit the dummy and walked out.

After the missed Oliver HTB and Curnow's goal, there was still more than 2 minutes on the clock. More than enough time to win.

McDonald gets the ball at half back. He has a completely empty corridor. He stops, scans, and holds the ball. He then kicks it to a contest on the wing, which Carlton wins.

There was zero urgency, zero hunger. It really hit me, that moment. It reminded me of the Neeld years and early Roos years. Just a complete lack of confidence, hunger, urgency to win and take the game on. I haven't screamed out for them to "HURRY UP!" like that for more than a decade. It was a real wake up call for me. The game is there to be won and we are still stopping and propping, looking for the free teammate in the hope it'll open up and we can use the corridor. What sort of strategy is that with time winding down? It is no bloody wonder this team has struggled in close games under Goodwin.

The semi final loss broke me. Footy and Melbourne hasn't been the same for me since. I don't barrack anymore. I just observe. People on this forum still talk about 2023 as if we were just "one kick away" and "inaccuracy cost us" but they were just soul and identity crushing loses for this club. We haven't been the same since. And something just clicked for me on Saturday. Just that one play. A complete lack of urgency everywhere. We just looked like a shadow of what we once witnessed. I am absolutely done for the year.

We are staring down the barrel of a bottom 4 finish with a relatively healthy list.

And that's with:

  1. The best ruckman ever, still at the top of his game.

  2. Two of the best midfielders of the past decade albeit badly down on form but still under 30 and should be at their peak.

  3. Two of the best defenders of the past decade albeit battling injuries.

  4. The best Indigenous midfielder-forward since Cyril.

  5. Four top 10 picks in your best 22.

  6. Multiple first round picks in your top 22 and on the fridge in the VFL.

This is not a list or player issue. There sure is room to improve on an individual level but we should 100% be competing for a finals spot.

Amen.

Watching tonight’s game . Hawks demolishing Carlton. Shows how truly insipid we are at the moment.

My personal thoughts are we need to get rid of Alan Richardson before we get rid of Goodwin. Richo has been responsible for assembling our sub-par assistant coaching ranks and I feind it incredible that it's not talked about more than he moved our premiership winning defensive coach, where defence was our strong points, to being our forward coach despite never playing forward during his career.

I think Goody gets his next year but there needs to be contingency plans in place and honestly I don't see any existing currently. Changing Goody for the sake of it just feels like the old Melbourne. I'm not giving him a pass and I really can't see him being the one to turn it around, but if we sack him without a genuine plan it'll be like jumping out of a plane and trying to invent a parachute while you fall.

Premiership aside and yes hard to win etc and grateful to Goodwin his record outside of 21 & 18 is very poor and what grounds should he be staying considering we are heading for another bottom 4-6 finish, he’s talking of building something when we had something and blew it! Talking to a retired Daniher to fix our fwd issues when we have failed miserably to trade in anyone in the last 4 years!

If Goody were in the music industry he'd be a one hit wonder. There's no taking away that and thankyou.

He's not making it on the charts again.

It's 17,362. That is the number of members we've lost in 18 months.

In dollar terms, it is a loss of $5,208,600.

Maybe Goodwin is more akin to the Gangnam Style guy. Exploded in one year out of nowhere, don't know what happened to that guy since 2014.

Actually, this is incorrect. It's much high due to the cumulative effect. Call it $8m (est.).

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecast—20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze — expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's  six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.
