I bet you he hasn't had 2 shocking years in a row

2 shocking years? Last year we were in the 8 up until the last half-dozen games, when the cumulative effect of losing our 2 best players became too much. This year we've played 3 matches, one of which we lost by a kick, even though we were playing kids and first-gamers (due to injuries to first-choice players). Since then we've had 2 bad games, and that's enough to have people like you throwing your toys out of the cot.

It's not the players who need to toughen up.

The last half of the year was shocking the first half of the year means nothing considering how badly we fell away. 2 shocking defeats against 2 teams that have barely won a game until this year. It's got alarm bells ringing. The club or any club won't stand for continual beltings. Goodwin and theclub have to be competitive soon or he won't have a job as simple as that.

Our players are good at winning the ball and thumping it forward but we are now asking them to play an offense which involves fast running, gut running, intricate passing by hand and by foot along with teamwork and playing as a team

A same game plan that requires exquisite foot skills, no fumbling and creating space and seperation

Right now, it's a bridge too far but by seasons end we'll know which players can adapt and those that can't adapt

I cannot see us going back to the old ways of thumping it forward

So just imagine if you were overseeing all this as the coach? No self-doubts, just keep reinforcing the message, over and over again and hoping like hell that it will work

So, we need to cut Goodwin some slack

He could have stuck to the old ways and maybe eked out 10 or 11 wins but instead of that, he's stuck his neck out and taken a risk

We had high hopes but in my view, the next flag will need a new group of players, combined with a number of experienced players to complement that new group

Who are the 3 players you would try to bring in? Any that are feasible.

Oscar Allen I think is not a necessity at the moment. We can't even deliver properly in our FWD 50.

Sorry D'one... what game plan are you referring to?

Sorry if this is picky Macca but if you're referring to this season so far, early days i realise, but we are presently ranked as the worst clearances team in the AFL.

So i'm not sure that we are even 'good' at that aspect you mentioned there.

Breaking it down we are ranked 14th for centre clearances and stone motherless last for stoppage clearances.

I'd just load up through the draft if it came to it. By seasons end, we'll know a lot more about which players are committed and those that may not be committed

And those with trade value that we might be better off trading. Right now, it's more of a guessing game

I'd definitely keep Kozzie but I'm not sure on 5 or 6 others (not 6 in all but 3 or 4 out of 5 or 6) Working both ways, those who might request a trade and those who we might help facilitate a trade

As an example ... say we had a forward who might think he has a better chance at excelling at another club

Or a mid who is being squeezed out of midfield minutes and is surplus to needs

It's not hard to figure out who I might be talking about, in both instances

Sounds dramatic but in order to get what you need, you have to give up a fair bit

Our trump card is Jason Taylor so we need to give him something to work with. Right now, we don't have a first round pick but that can change

It's just a wild guess but I reckon we'll end up with at least 2 first round picks and 3 or 4 x 2nd round picks

Why? Because we need to keep rebuilding the list with players who have great foot skills along with players who have excellent leg speed

We need to plan for the next flag assault

We've started doing so with McVee, Windsor, Tholstrup, Lindsay & Langford but it doesn't stop there

You are right, I should have said 'have' been (winning the ball and thumping it forward)

Bring in Hinkley as an assistant next year. He’ll be sacked by the bye round.

Hell then get Butters over the line with whatever we can muster with the change we get from Oliver or Trac or both.

Keep Kozzy at all costs.

That would be Brad Green.

There's more than a little validity to such a notion.

Is he just trying to steer a ship through an ice field or does he actually have a course in mind ?

Strikes me we are impotent as a club.

Goodwin's not going anywhere, the Board won't sack him because of a few disgruntled fans. Even a lot of disgruntled fans. Port fans have been calling for Hinkley's head for almost as long as he's been there, yet he's still into his 13th year.

Within the club everyone would understand what's going on.

I doubt very much he will be sacked before seasons end. The club don’t need the drama. It won’t surprise if he decides he’s had enough at years end although we may get our best 23 on the park in a month and storm home.

He hasn’t evolved & alarm bells by his own admission who flipped back to the old game plan in 2024, they failed to trade in any decent power fwd to take a contest mark from the tonne of fwd50 entries! They need to be bold and trade Oliver & target fwds

They should be sounding out a new coach ready to step in.

You can't really fully commit to that until you sack the current coach.

I agree a lot of people are overreacting but last year from the Dockers game onwards was poor. Remember we also put in a no show on Queen's Birthday, lost to the Eagles, gave up a 50 point lead vs North, and had multiple 8+ goal losses. There were some good wins in there too but broadly in was a poor end to the year. Shocking is an overstatement though.

Goody did also say in an interview that it will take time, especially early season. So he was definitely upfront and honest with that assessment.

Whether he is the right person to take us forward I’m not sure, but at least the club is working on changing the list so we can compete again. Look at the players we brought in who have actually been in our top handful players so far, Lindsay and Langford. Both are elite runners and kicks, which we lacked up until the last few years.

It’s blindingly obvious our main issues atm are a lack of personnel to execute the gameplan but also I think because it isn’t ingrained, players are second guessing themselves a lot which leads to skill errors. We need to move forward with the times though so no going back now, full steam ahead with the modern gameplan and seeya to players who get left behind.

Anyone care to take a stab at what this "New" game plan looks like, coz all I've seen is more cataclysmic continuation of last years 'bomb' into the forward line fiasco. What makes it worse is our previously contested ball strength is now gone. Players look shellshocked and coach appears clueless!

Too hard to tell without the required players on the park to execute the necessary skills. The last two games are basically null and void as our skills have been so shocking.

Waiting to see what Mcvee, Kozzie, Windsor, Langford, Lindsay in the same team looks like before I can even judge what the plan is personally.

I'd say it would be similar to sides like Hawthorn and Giants.

Looking to score more points from the defensive half, which is what the best sides are doing and why us and Carlton are both struggling.

So in the meantime, we should all be blaming the players who are making the fundamental errors, not the coaching

For instance, if Billings chokes in front of goal, how can that be the fault of Goodwin? Or if Rivers fumbles or Viney misses another target? ⁷

And yes, we are trying to change and Goodwin has said there will be teething issues. And he is right, it's not a magic wand situation

We have to give the new game plan a chance to take hold but there's a chance that the players (as a group) may not be able to change

And if that happens, it won't be just the coach copping it in the neck. We'll need a host of new players

100% agree. Could say the same thing about the 2023 finals series, kick 9.17 against the Blues you can't really blame Goodwin for that when you generate that many shots.

I guess the one blame is the gameplan wasn't conducive to generating high quality shots, but still should've won by 3-4 goals.

Langford, Lindsay, Windsor, McVee, Rivers, Pickett, JVR, Turner, Tholstrup and Petty is a very strong basis from which to grow a team. It’s really up to Petracca and Oliver whether they want to hang around and help out or chase glory elsewhere. If this year doesn’t improve, which I think it will, I’d take the picks and move them on.

  • GAMEDAY: Essendon

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

Facing the very real and daunting prospect of starting the season with five straight losses, the Demons head to South Australia for the annual Gather Round, where they’ll take on the Bombers in search of their first win of the year. Who comes in, and who comes out?

  • NON-MFC: Round 05

Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons besides us winning?

  • CASEY: Geelong

There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

  • REPORT: Geelong

I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
