reynolds46 1,310 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 "who wanted to remain anonymous to speak freely" this is a McLure standard line that quality journalists would never have used in the past because it basically allows you to say anything without being ever called out. It's weak and lazy journalism 1 1
fredblackham 19 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Who else got suckered into this click bait on an article of no substance. discipline is needed not to feed these people who call themselves journalists but are just advertising sales people preying on our weaker instincts. best thing we can do to help the team is silence the click bait by not clicking 1 1

Graeme Yeats' Mullet 6,791 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 McClure standard M.O. Pronounce something marginally relevant, or inconsequential, and thus unarguable... and then commentate on his own pronouncement - thus the commentary, and the reaction (or increasingly, lack of reaction) to the commentary becomes the story Poor Journalism 3

red and blue forever 1,074 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 of course clubs are interested in Oliver and they are doing the right thing by their clubs asking the question. the answer is obviously NO. but you have to do your due diligence as a club recruiter and ask.
Demon Disciple 12,532 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 If the trade compensation for any MFC player is adequate, I’d be more than happy to listen to any potential trades. Something has to give after the season we had and our current list isn’t going to get us back to GF glory. We are no longer in the window, so considerable moves and decisions need to be made to get us back there. 1

In saying that, McClure is one who I believe has such a bad track record now with 'inside information' that I would go as far as to say I doubt there is any truth in his 'mail' as it stands. I definitely believe clubs would be throwing the bait out there, but McClure's comments about Oliver's feelings I find extremely hard to believe. With the way the media report particularly around trade period it’s all very loose and fast you can’t really believe anything, but just like a broken clock they will be right every now and again, whether that’s through anything other than dumb luck is debatable 1

That feeling has peaked in the last two weeks as the trade season approaches.” That surprises me, but there are posters on here who would know better. you didn't include the next sentence: But a third source said Melbourne had indicated to people in the industry they were not interested in trading the 27-year-old sam needs to pick a lane 2
mo64 5,910 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Other clubs would see Oliver's market value at it's lowest right now. They'd be mad not to ask. Conversely, we'd be mad to entertain any offers, unless there are other factors at play, as was the case with Jesse Hogan. 2

I personally would refer it not be Oliver as at his best I think he is a top 3 player in the league. Would prefer he gets back to the shape he was in on GF day 2021 (considerably different to this season). I also think the idea of paying some of someone's salary must be some kind of joke. Why would we want to pay him to work his way back to his best somewhere else? We should be committing to helping him get back to his best with us. I'd be much more amenable to trying to convince Petracca to go to a club that has some decent currency as I think at their best Oliver is in a completely different class. That is assuming what has been reported about Petracca being desperate to get out is true. 1

If Oliver has straightened up throughout the year, as suggested, every club would be asking the question. He had a down year by his own standards but he’d still be comfortably in the best 50 players in the comp if properly fit. I’d prefer to keep Clarry over Trac, think the hurdles Clayton has to overcome are significantly less than Petracca, his brand and his family. 4

It would speak to a poor relationship between club and player, likely poor communication too - he thinks he’s unvalued when that’s not the case.
dazzledavey36 56,303 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 Listen to what the best offer is out there. If it's two first rounders including a top 10 pick this year then we'd have to seriously consider it. This whole Oliver situation in itself is becoming a distraction for the club and has been for the last two years. It's not going away anytime soon, let's see what offers are out there. 6

If any other club thinks he can get back to his best, then we should too, and we should be backing ourselves in to bring that version of him back. If not, then why would another club want him? No one wants this year’s version of him at his current contract. 2

demoncat 1,722 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 I don’t see how Geelong has anywhere near enough currency to get the deal done unless they’re sending Sam De Koning back the other way Of course you’d listen to any offers of a top 10 pick and another first rounder, but I don’t see anyone who would make that deal in a strong draft and why we would entertain anything less Would much rather give Clarry another off season to try and get back to his best 2
Young Blood 2,642 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 (edited) I'm very interested if its a decent offer. Love Clarry but I just think we still have a window and need to take this sort of risk to really push for a flag again. Before Gus went down I was interested in a trade for Clarry. I just felt in 2023 there were number of games with Clarry out with injury where we looked much more dynamic with the Gus, Viney, Trac and Sparrow rotations. I think the current best midfielders have players now who can play both inside and outside. I think as a primary ball winner at the contest Clarry can still excel but when we've tried him on the outside or as a release player of late I think this is an area of his game that's gone down hill somewhat. Viney, Trac and now Rivers have a greater ability to win the ball and be more damaging with the next disposal AND be able to run and spread on the outside. If we could add a Peatling and another mid in the draft like a Langford I think with our current mix we could have so many options to finding a lethal midfield to match it with the best. A starting midfield of Trac, Viney, Rivers and Peatling. With depth/rotations of Kozzy, Sparrow, Windsor. Langford and eventually McVee. I'd be much more interested in this then another year with Oliver even at his fittest. Again not against the man. I think he'll go down as one of our greatest but just think a different mix will help us moving forward. Not to mention the salary side of things. Edited September 30, 2024 by Young Blood 1

The end is nigh 447 Posted September 30, 2024 Posted September 30, 2024 can’t blame other clubs for sewing seeds of interest. Geelong could come again next year with another offer if Melbourne has a shambolic season. Let them come, put up the wall. Focus on our targets when the window opens.
