Yes I remember being so hopeful for 95 after making the prelim in 94. We had a great team, even without Jako our forward line of Lyon, Schwarz and Pike was really good. 95 the injuries piled up and we lost a run of games only by a kick or so. Was a the 'g when Schwartz did his knee a second time. Heartbreaking. 

Jako was my favourite player though and I was sad when he was delisted.

Watching Jako as a kid, I had the impression he wasn't a great kick due to the number of behinds he kicked (208 goals, 173 behinds). Looking back, I realise I was being too harsh. Disinclined to pass, he took a lot of low percentage shots; 39% of his kicks were scoring shots (not including many OOTF) and averaged 1 handball per game! Moreover, I didn't realise how skilled he was on his left. Would have made him unpredictable to a defender; could turn and snap on left or right from anywhere inside 50m.

me too…. it was the follow up tragedy to the 87 prelim loss but a much more silent heart ache. We crossed paths with the proverbial black cat that off season.  All the focus of course went to schwartz but we lost multiple superstars or about to be superstars in one fell swoop. Easy to forget just how good Tingay and Charles were.

Neitz was playing in defence then - but the forward line also had Sean Charles and Martin Pike.

that backline was mint too - baby david neitz, paul prymke, sean wight, the febey bros, brett lovett, yeats

it was a team that coulda shoulda woulda gone on to great things but never did due to unfortunate circumstances

schwarz's pirouette out of a contest to kick a goal in the final vs the baggers is one of my favourite things of all time

'94 was exciting as we outperformed expectation, that final against Carlton was one of my favourite games ever just demolished them as an underdog.

 

Other posters are right 95 was cursed. But for  me 1998 was the flag that got away due to the worst finals format ever that punished us and was never seen again.

In a pre-season game v. Collingwood at Princes Park, by quarter time Jako had twice led and marked strongly, converted with two lovely long goals, got reported for snotting an opponent then tweaked his hammy and his day was done.

Yep.

A very successful career, long and even into coaching - maybe even still, I think.

Looking at the highlights, it is amazing how he could get into space in a lead. His understanding of forward play, and his reading of what was happening to the ground, was exceptional.

In ‘98 The Croms should have been booted out in week 1 of the Finals after being thrashed by 10 goals.

He is in the San Diego (now LA) Chargers hall of fame as a punter. Paved the way for the likes of Sav Rocca (Philly Eagles) and Ben Graham (NY Jets).
