You know, it's almost as if the Moneyball method isn't as easy as the movie makes out. ...

The Demons have watched on as Hawthorn’s No. 5 draft pick Nick Watson made a huge impact in his first season including exceptional finals performances.

We watched on? Windsor had a fantastic season and I doubt we gave a flying f how Watson was playing. But did he make a huge impact ? I recall him missing every set shot for half a season. and he's kicked a respectable 25 goals, but hardly huge? He played a great final I suppose, but so did Weideman. Ronke kicked 7 in a match and where's he? Jon Ralph you are a dawk.

He struggled early but was incredible as the season went on. Windsor had a good year too.

The point Ralph is making is it’s ok to abandon the Houston move and know we’ll be a strong chance to get a good player at 5, or by the time it is used likely 6.

Once again that’s the one saving grace for this year and awful trade period.

Way too completely miss a point and go off on some random tangent.

DeeSpencer already educated on me on that point, and far more eloquently.

"Way too" chime in pointlessly.

They aren’t great but Ned McHenry and Will Hamill are both better than many delisted free agents.

Midfield depth is surely the priority but our flanker depth isn’t too healthy either.

A pair of fit, quick, hard running 24 year olds is worth considering.

Assume Cats will grab McHenry.   He’s a local lad (Barwon Heads) with talent who just didn’t quite make if however has the talent.

Will Hamill could not get his body right.  Saw him play some decent games for Crows but kept getting injured and he again didn’t show enough to often retain his place. Might get a train on spot over the summer.  Bayside boy from the Mornington peninsula so expect Frankston or Casey to sound out his signature in the off season.

All Ralph was pointing out is the great opportunity we have with that pick no as the variety of players in the top picks is very wide and available.

Also see how good was no 5 last year also later on he mentions Caleb and how good he was. So is just demonstrating the strength of our pick 5 in this 2024 bring a very strong and variable draft opportunity.

Any chance our club can attract any free agent .. oops I forget we don’t have any need for a mid, forward  or a replacement ruck .. just a back up to keep Fullerton company. We have gone from being a destination club for 1 season to any reasonable talent stay away

Ned McHenry could be a good replacement for ANB and would cost very little.

I think his talent lies in giving his opponent the Jimmy Grits. That's about it.

Oh and he has a huge tank.

I don't use this term on Melbourne players but I will with McHenry..

He is a genuine spud, please do not go near him. We're trying to improve our list, not make it worse with crabs like McHenry.

Add a few more and they could end up with Henry VIII. Might give away a few frees though for taking opponents heads off in tackles.

crom buddy said mchenry just doesn't ever impact the contest; floats on by

from what i have seen watching him play on tv, he doesn't look like he runs hard either way, which is a big no-no for a small forward type

Melbourne

DRAFT PICKS: 5, 40, 48, 53, 64
TARGETS: Wade Derksen, Tom Campbell (DFA), Dan Houston
DEPARTING: Angus Brayshaw, Ben Brown, Lachie Hunter (retired), Kyah Farris-White, Josh Schache (delisted)
STILL WAITING: Adam Tomlinson, Marty Hore, Joel Smith
HOW THE DEALS GET DONE: For now Melbourne appears out of the Houston race but have the assets to get Port Adelaide interested, especially if pick 5 is split. Tom Campbell has been photoshopped into a new jumper for his fourth AFL club. The Giants have indicated they want to hold on to Derksen, having already lost a few players. But given he hasn’t played an AFL game and has family reasons for returning to Victoria, surely a deal can be struck. Hovering over all of this is the future of Clayton Oliver, with the Dees adamant he is not leaving. Alex Neal-Bullen should be traded early in the week to Adelaide for pick 28. Adam Tomlinson is expected to depart.
TEAM NEEDS: Melbourne has needed more scoring power for years and there is hope swingman Derksen can help somewhat. Tom McDonald was re-signed but extra height in defence would be useful, particularly with Tomlinson likely gone. The midfield is getting thinner – especially if Oliver gets out – so some more power in there would also be useful.
WHY NOT: He isn’t going to blow anyone away but Conor Stone is a talent and hasn’t signed a new deal at GWS yet. Could be a good buy around the edges.

I agree. Surely Dees “list manager” has been on the phone to discuss. Parfitt would fit into our team nicely maybe even to replace half forward role vacated by ANB. He is not of the high quality of ANB but useful addition.  He’s a delisted free agent so costs nothing.
Recent story on delisted players however mentioned others big it’s simply an opinion piece by Josh Barnes (code sport) and not any inside knowledge

BRANDAN PARFITT

Age: 26, Games: 130, 2024:

The inside midfielder looked to have cracked Geelong’s on ball rotation mid year but fell back to the VFL and was cut.
A premiership player, Parfitt has shown plenty across eight seasons as a hard tackling midfielder and even Chris Scott said he hoped Parfitt would find another home.

Clubs that would suit:

GWS – With James Peatling on the outer, a role-playing defensive minded midfielder would help the Giants.

Collingwood – At his best, Parfitt would be a great foil for Nick Daicos and a fit Jordan De Goey.

North Melbourne – A role playing mid that can take some physical pressure off the young ball users at North.
