Not against getting Houston, but trading our future picks through to '26 could be fraught with danger. Tassie will begin to hit the draft from '27 onwards so we need to make the most of our picks between now and then.

    Plus less than half our players fronted up against Gws and we almost won.

    Tasmania are about to raid the draft, making the next few years so important. 
    Kalani White may well go to the GCS, for mine that feels the most likely but I’ve no idea.

    Our top pick (pick 8-12ish) surely needs to go to the best young mid with clean skills and a bit of pace. We all know where our midfield rates currently.

    If we could get Houston for a future first and a pack of chips I’d be less concerned. 2 first round picks is simply overs for a 28 year old. 
     

    In other words, I'd be trading out of the first round in those drafts because the first round will be mauled by Tassie access.

    And again, we have a F/S and an NGA next year that directly go to both weaknesses on our list. KPD and ruck respectively.

    Kalani White isn't going to GCS. That's nonsense.

    The more I think about it, the more validity hitting the 2024 first round really hard has. Use your future firsts to do strengthen your hand.

    Waterman played his 100th game at the weekend against Fremantle, kicking three goals from 12 touches.

    Oscar Allen is also out of contract at the end of next season.

    West Coast have 12 players without contracts for next year as they look to rebuild their list under a new coach.

    All opposition Forwards are linked to the MFC, just because of our need for KPF’s. JVR, Kickett and Fritta says our forward line has enough talent. Take this with a grain of salt. Possibly speculation from AFL commentators.

    Prediction…

    Waterman will stay at Eagles

    Allen will stay at Eagles

    Houston will stay at Port

    There’s a lot of player managers who put out this type of information and the media laps it up !!! it’s to get a better deal for their players.

    Houston’s not out of contract so can’t imagine the leaking is a tactic to squeeze more out of Port.

    WC on the other hand didn’t include TPP uplifts in their contracts to players, so a lot of the guys signed before the last CBA have fallen behind the rest of their AFL peers pay wise. That’s the reason Barrass’ name keeps coming up, he’s getting paid a decent amount below market value r/n. Some of these Eagles may be using oppo interest to drive up WC offers, BUT maybe someone can have their head legitimately turned.

    Sounds like there's every chance some of, if not all of Martin, Rioli, Baker & Bolton won't be at Richmond next year

    Could they possibly be the worst team ever in 2025?

    Rivers is already playing mid. If we had Trac available now, Trac would play mostly forward with Rivers taking more CBAs than Trac.

    It's McVee into the midfield hence our interest in Cumming and Houston we hoped, would add to our midfield. Who the hell knows what's happening with Houston anymore. He's either a good poker player or that's no longer a chance.

    I'm not sure he'd work in midfield either, but that's how to sell him on us. The old Jeremy Howe deal. Give him the promise of midfield minutes and if it doesn't work, back to half back.

    As per the norm, I'm happy to disagree about Houston's kicking so I'll leave it there. 

    I'd like to see McVee have a crack on ball but I just don't see it happening because Goody. 

    And as for Trac and Rivers, I think we'll see a split again with forward and mid. He's too valuable around the ball to be mainly playing forward. But I guess we'll see. 

    Either way, I think this off-season will be remembered as one of the most important for us given the state of our ageing stars and I'm intrigued to know what kind of moves we pull to ensure their longevity. Especially Max's.

    I tried to change the name, but I'm stuck with it for a year haha.

    Apparently, we are actively thinking about putting McVee through the midfield next year, so we'll see.

    It's interesting RE Trac. Against the Blues, he almost single handedly played a forward hand and won us that game. Without him playing forward for the rest of the game, we don't stay in it. Then against Collingwood on KB, before he got injured, everything he touched across half forward led to a scoring opportunity. Often we stuffed the chance. When he went off, we had no forward half connector.

    Those two games show you how vital he has become for our forward half, that said he's a superstar mid too, so you want to try and get a 60 forward, 40 midfield split I reckon, depending on the opponent and the balance of the game.

    I've come around to the idea of trying to hit this top 20 in 2024 really hard. If we could land two midfield young guns (think Port in the 2018 draft), it changes our list profile and sets us up for 5-10 years. Use our 2024 first rounder on a young gun, and dangle our 2025 first rounder (and 2026 @old55?) to see if we can't land another.

    Tairon Ah-Mu. Has been very good for Haileybury this year and shown a bit when given a run at the Stingrays.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
