Agree 100% - Alice is a great climate for winter footy - yes, last year we endured the wettest coldest week on record for our game - usually warm, dry, and sunny.  But Darwin, where no doubt the majority of games would have to be played is frankly a friggin nightmare - hot, humid, wet.  I understand (but am happy to be corrected) isn't their major competition season the summer?

Of course these concessions, and the further worsening of the disgraceful schedule iniquity (quaintly refereed to by some as the draw) would be mitigated by transferring a Victorian based team in toto to Hobart, like South Melbourne - Sydney and Fitzroy Brisbane, leaving 18 teams (which for those mathematically inclined is an even number meaning no regular byes as we endure in the VFL)  

That would have to be IMO one of North, StKilda or Hawthorn, all of which have already dabbled into the Apple Isle.    In fact amalgamating the three aforementioned into Tassie Devils would get us back to a far more manageable  and equitable 16 team competition - pipe dream only I know.

Upon doing some research, it appears that U16 f/s prospects Oliver Green and Tex Robertson will be eligible to be drafted by the Tassie Devils under "father/son" rules which only require there parents to be from Tasmania and have played 100 games.

Their draft year is 2028, one year after the Devils currently planned introduction.

what's more interesting is where the 20th team will be based - there's no value to the competition in a 19th team, so the big q is where the the next team is based

cricket oztraya has already declared that they have no interest in it, as a roof makes things harder for them due to shadows on the pitch etc.

People I know in Hobart say the proposed site is poorly chosen, with not enough parking and little public transport.

I've been to a few games down there and on my last visit walked around where the ground is going to be built. It's location is just outside the southern edge of the CBD and harbour so dead easy to get to for anyone that owns a pair of legs. Has to be a million % better than the current option that requires a twice daily footy special ferry or taxi ride to get to and from.

As a tasweigan demonlander desperate for the Devils to happen, the public transport argument is mute IMO. The Hobart infrastructure is poor everywhere when strained.

It was chosen to be in Macq Point because at least the city can accommodate sufficent parking within a walking distance, supported by existing amenities which would be activated en masse pre and post game. Nowhere else can do that... at least in a sustainable way, supporting a positive commuter experience on match day.

As for the Domain, well, I suppose that could work, but that's not what has been put forward, so also mute to discuss.

I also think the roof concerns for cricket (i.e. shadow) will be addressed, purely because there surely has to be a sensible engineering solution to prevent the shadow impacting upon the pitch. I have no reputable source for that belief, however.

We will know once and for all whether the stadium will be built in June, so fingers crossed for a positive outcome.

Stadium location is fine. Road infrastructure is terrible but won't be worse as a result. Hurry up and build it.

The AFL is $-centric, and assuming the huge amount they have already committed to this project, there is now way this is not going ahead now. I reckon they care little about what Tassie people think and have enough clout to bend political will their way.

As for their draft concessions etc... the reality is we are headed for another fully compromised period for drafting young talent. I can't tell you how much I hate this, but I suppose it is essential in some form to get Tassie off the ground. List managers are going to have to be fully prepared for anything and to think creatively to ensure good young talent gets to their club.

I just hope the father-son system is protected and uncompromised.

they haven't commited much, if anything

it's all in 'intended funds' at this stage

and, as you say, the afl is $-centric, which is why a 19th team simply must be joined shortly after by a 20th

the entry of the taswegian franchise is something that should have happened eons ago, but at this point it adds little to the broadcast revenue, which is where the bulk of the $$s in the game came from, as it doesn't add more games to the competition on a round-by-round basis

i fully expect that a 'play-in' before finals will become part of the equation tho, with teams finished 7-10 playing off to make the actual finals, and those finishing 1-6 getting a genuine week's break between the end of the home and away and the finals

Perhaps the club itself was the hypothetical?
