Hopefully in the media department.

Two birds with one stone.

by the by it did occur to me yesterday that perhaps there is a reason the dees comms team seems to be staffed by kids on work experience, ie to leave space and funding for Gus to come in and play a key role.

In all seriousness he would be a brilliant fit. Already doing club comms, smart as a whip, has an interest in media and who wouldn't want to hear Gus interview his ex teammates?

I was saying that to someone at work today, it would be a perfect fit for Gus to be in the club's Media department.  I've been thinking for years he would have a brilliant career in the media after football, I can't think of a better fit for his talents.  He's funny, clever, endearing, he'd be so good!

I agree totally and ..... I think our club is staggering a bit from the last 6 months.

I'd love to see Gus deep in the footy department as a runner and or development / mentoring role with the team.

We'll need his level head and wonderful communication skills both at the club level but also with the players as we hit some more rocky times ahead.

Really glad he's going to continue to work at our club.

[censored] poor treatment and reaction post the K.O. from the AFL and the rest of their paid media cohorts.

Hope he successfully sues for millions asap.

All the best to our Premiership champ.

I was always keen on this prior to hearing the bad news, but in hindsight with Gus retiring, trading up our two early picks (if it was poss) and nabbing Sanders was the better option and appears to be even more so now.

To those who hold sway with the cheer squad, @WalkingCivilWar maybe, the banner for first game should simply say Gus. Everyone will know the courage, commitment, and collegiality it means. Bit worried someone will stretch the alliteration to add concussion, so just don't.

"Sports Integrity Australia" might be interested in  being contacted although not sure if AFL is member.

But so what, they should be...

WCW mentioned a couple of days ago that she was stepping away from Ðemondland for a while (I think in the unity thread).

Zero short term (say next 10 -15 years).

In large part because there's little evidence they work (they don't stop the brain whiplashing around inside the skull, which as I understand it is where the real damage is done).

But at some point for sure.

I have heard there are some helmets designs pretty well advanced that look promising.

They have some sort of compression material that absorbs some of the impact and reduces the whiplash effect.

And apparently there are smart mouth guards already available that measure impact to track the frequency and severity of head knocks.

But what I can see soon is the bump being banned.

And even leaving the ground to smother such is the risk (as we have just seen)

Goody has said the bump being banned is inevitable and that they train the players not to bump.

This is where the AFL is allowing itself to be exposed legally - and morally.

They should ban the bump NOW.

Or at least phase it in by immediately banning the shepperd/bump where players run past the player with the ball and hit a trailing player.

Proactive

The hit de Goey put on that freo rookie last year is what I'm thinking of there. He flushed his jaw with his shoulder. Broke his jaw and knocked him into next week.

From memory only got two weeks. Football act. If he had not got him in the head he wouldn't have been reported.

But it was a totally unnecessary act. Whichbbroke the jaw of a 20 year old kid in his first or second game. Shepperd with your arms out if you want to shepherd.

But they won't because they are gutless and don't want all the talk back, its not netball whoo ha and bone head ex footballers on their back about changing the game (massive credit to David King on this front - one of the few ex footballers serious about this issue. He has too many friends with cte).

And inevitably someone will get hip and shouldered and have to immediately retire because of the severity of the hit. Get brain damage, just like gus did.

And then they will have to scramble to ban the bump. Too late for a young bloke who's footy career is over in the blink of an eye.

Reactive.

The other factor is a serious legal tsunami is heading the AFL's way. Its surely going to force the AFL to make significant changes to the game.

The NFL has already faced it/is facing it.

The big, big difference is the NFL is a trillion dollar industry.

The AFL is small change in comparison.

Of course the NFL want to reduce risk (eg helmet technology, in game testing, some rule changes etc) but its hard to see them radically reducing the number of helmet to helmet clashes that characterise the game

But the NFL can absorb the payouts, insurance and super schemes and factor it into their business model.

The AFL can't.

I’d love to see someone do a basic comparison of the knocks clubs and players do and the penalty

Perhaps the club could consider awarding, in perpetuity, the number 10 jumper to say third or fourth year players that  display Gus' qualities of selflessness, leadership, ability to connect people, sense of humor and team first philosophy.

Needn't be the best player - often isn't.

When i was young fella playing footy and cricket, such a player might win the best club man award, which back in th day was often seen as bit of good bloke award given to plodders.

But every team, whether that be in sport, or work, needs such 'glue' people. And I think now we have a much better sense of the importance of people with these qualities in any team environment.

Super idea. Someone with club connections should suggest it

I thought there was some karma.

Maynard slammed into Murphy, who then lost his bearings and ended up unconscious from the subsequent collision in the '23 grandfinal.

Murphy has been unable to get it together, remaining on long term concussion protocols.

The wrecking ball strikes again. Very little duty of care, a thug, goes in with intent to hurt any in his way. Turns himself into, ~100kg missile that leads with his shoulder.

Is the "Angus" shoulder still a worry for him after his surgery?

The AFL cannot afford to have such recklessness from the players.i

I’m a bad person but when it happened I yelled that ones for angus

Mrs super (CFC ) was not happy

The fact that an appeals body determined that Maynard should not be suspended clearly confirmed that a new rule was needed. We might not agree with that tribunal's decision, but the AFL was left with no choice but to amend the rule to ensure a future tribunal would not make the same decision in similar circumstances.

And to be even more controversial. I wonder how Maynard feels today? I expect he feels terrible. Whether anybody on here cares, or should care, is another matter, of course.

There was absolutely no need to make up another new rule - for years it has been emphasised again and again that if one chooses to leave the ground and cause an injury (or in the case of Kozzie even if you don't) you are liable - special exceptions being for CFC or CFC players around finals time of course.

I am looking forward to the decision to sue the AFL. The discovery process will be epic.

"As plaintiff it is our contention that a sustained culture of selective accountability and punishments, driven by inappropriate considerations of internal politics, social and personal connections and commercial interests prioritised ahead of consistent justice, have played a key role in the failure of the Australian Football League to provide a safe workplace. We contend that this incident and the related premature conclusion of a career is not only a liable result of this executive failure, but that communications related to this specific case will provide evidence of the alleged mis-governance and selective application of rules with regard to the tribunal processes which excused the behaviour on spurious grounds and which delivered a demonstrably insufficient prosecution argument unfit for. As such, the below schedule of relevant persons of influence within the AFL, Collingwood football club, and associated parties are hereby given notice that they shall be required to retain, preserve and to provide to the court all communications made in relation to the tribunal case."

Justice must be served.

Things like this can tear the heart out of a football club. Not only the manner of how the most recent concussion happened but losing someone who is the heart and soul. I don't know what to say at the moment.

Can tear the heart out, or make them stronger.  Over to you all, players.

His Journey & story should be plastered all over the change rooms and be a mentor to young players to show no to take their time for granted & what can be achieved coming from adversity.

Makes my blood boil when dumb decisions are made by players who take their time for granted and not only hurt themselves but the club!

While one can argue that we have better things to focus our energies on(*), please explain how 'banging on' about Maynard gives them ammunition?  Take any historical evil action that people may be reminded of.  I don't see that reminders gives ammunition to the supporters of the evil action?

(*) not that what we do on forums like this has any effect on anything except ourselves.

I suggest the club annually awards the Bradshaw Trophy in perpetuity to the individual who inflicts the most harm on the Filth in any 12-month period.

In fact, let's get Stephen May to run through Maynard on KB and knock him into next week. We could then call it the Maysie-Brayshaw Trophy. Milkshake is the obvious choice as the inaugural chair of the three person panel that determines the award's recipient. Suggest Daisey and Danny Hughes (as the best player to wear the number 10 after Gus) complete the make-up of the inaugural panel. Should a panel member be indisposed for any reason, Carl Dietrich will be co-opted as a short-term replacement. When Maysie retires, the panel will be disbanded and the great man himself will be the sole determiner of the award.

The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
