Rivals weigh up move for Dees superstar

CLUBS are weighing up whether to make a play for Melbourne superstar Clayton Oliver in this year's trade period. Oliver signed a massive seven-year contract in the middle of last year through to the end of 2030, but had a challenging year. He played 15 games but missed 10 weeks with a hamstring injury.

Rival clubs are considering the cost of a trade attempt for Oliver, a four-time best-and-fairest winner with the Demons. It is unclear if the brilliant midfielder would be open to any move and there has been no indication Melbourne would be willing to part with him. – Riley Beveridge, Cal Twomey

From the media, yes. We’re generally rated a premiership contender with a generational list that has a deficiency in one area of the ground.

I don’t necessarily prescribe to the theory that we don’t already have the talent in place to address this, but the consistent narrative will be ‘will Melbourne try and fix the obvious problem, or stubbornly stick with what they have already tried’.

Thats also what makes this offseason an interesting one.... will we stick with the plan or change it up a bit?

I personally think we don't need to change a lot, but bugger me we need to fix F50 enteries and possession chains.

I've been hearing this Oliver rumour from numerous trusted sources. He was bloody close to departing for Carlton not long ago. It would have to be a hugely beneficial deal for the MFC for me to be anything less than completely peeed off. It has the potential to cause massive ripple effect through the club. How would Trac feel about it?

They might as well start “Apparently Nick Daicos is weighing up offers from other clubs”.

Seriously the Oliver content is absolutely a lot of BS. Or politely it’s RUBBISH !!

You got it - Clarrie for the Daicos Brothers and pick 18.

so yr saying that there's legitimate questions being asked by other clubs regarding clayton oliver's availability as a trade option?

the same clayton who is signed until 2030?

A trade may not eventuate, but personally I don't see how this is so out of the question and beyond belief as what some people on here are making it out to be.

Club(s) are asking a question of a contracted player; at best the club shuts it down and the fact he is a required player is reaffirmed.

Abridged version

Oliver signed a massive seven-year contract

It is unclear if Oliver would be open to any move

there has been no indication Melbourne would be willing

– Riley Beveridge, Cal Twomey

Why would Oliver want to leave the Dees? This rumor doesn't ring true at all.

However, it was obvious, from the optics, that Oliver was not himself once he returned from injury - both form and on-field attitude wise. Is it this that has perhaps initiated these rumors?

It might be true that clubs are looking at it.

But there is nothing saying Oliver or Melb are.  Don't read into it too much.

Mud from two B grade AFL journos.  Beveridge and his sidekick should move on.

Twomey and Beveridge are two of the best analysts and most informed AFL journos.

You fancy yourself in the draft and trade space, surely you must acknowledge that Twomey is very good in this area.

He knows his draft

Trades are as mixed bag as anyone

Riley, as a massive baggers fan, was red hot on Oliver to the blues years ago

Yes, that is what is happening and the club has confirmed it, if you care to read one of the articles on AFL.com.au, channel 9, channel 7 or The Age.

He (Twomey) knows the draft game and yes he gets good intel. But this “Oliver” speculation that other clubs will be looking at an offer is at best “fantasy” in my view.  He’s going to be in red and blue in 2024.  Perhaps I was harsh but emotions still running high after the September pain.

Yeah but it’s reporters reporting on reporters discussing things amongst themselves

Until someone quotes someone and a club says that they are keen on him then it’s all just hot air

interesting that morris has got the ‘tattoo’ story and run with it - first journo to mention it; been known for a while

No- it's not. Read the 7news article. Club has confirmed.

You mean this?

Melbourne confirmed to 7NEWS that they were aware other clubs were circling Oliver.

But they insisted he was a required player and under a lengthy contract.

There has also been no suggestion Oliver wants to move.

What if Tracc and Gawny have done an Amanda Duncan and given them the Green light to do a trade?

IMO this is just a shot across the bow at Clarrie by the coaches that he needs to work on his professionalism and readjust his focus back to football. And given how he played when he returned from injury, I can’t say I blame them.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
