why do we need Watson we have Kozzie and McAdam as smalls

He is small, yes, but he plays a different role to Kos.  Kind of like saying why did the Doggies recruit Weightman when they already had Caleb Daniel

Meanwhile we need talls and wingers

Some earlier comments regarding uncertainty over Petty should push us towards selecting Curtin. Petty should line up at CHF for us next year, but what about May, how many years does he have left?

I say we tell WC to trade #1 for 6,11,F1 or we will take Curtin at #6. WC F1 not going to cut it for mine.

If Curtin is available at #11 we can then talk about a F1 pick swap.

May and Max probably have 2 good years left at best.

The only problem then is if Roos or Hawks take Curtin.

Eagles admin could not survive the fallout of losing both Reid and Curtin.

Some of the Phantom Drafts have Jed Walter at 3, others at 4.

Any reason they think North won't bid at #2 ? GC surely want the kid so it'll be matched.

I know doesn't really impact us, but still a bit confused.

I think that ship has already sailed…

Appears moving up to pick 4 is most likely our most-achievable priority tonight

Definitely not an easy call. So take Reid and then give us the bank for #6 i.e. F1 & F2. There is a generational player every year and having Pick 1 in 2024 draft or close to it would put us in the driver seat. No doubt the AFL will concoct a way to have the 2024 1st pick end up being 5 or 6 after compensation, Collingwood tax and some other non sensical bull dust.

Still cannot believe Curtin could drop to pick 10 through to the Cats. Madness!!! He’s got so much talent and versatility.  If I was Kangas, I’d take Curtin and Mckercher.

Sounds like he's not really in our primary plans.

If that's the case I hope the roos or hawks take him early and one of Watson/Sanders/duursma (unlikely) slide through.

So would I, I think we’ll take him.

Was just watching the draft version of gettable, they were speaking with Adelaide’s recruiter. They mention Adelaide has used a lot of first rd draft picks at the draft in recent years and asked if that would continue next year, the response was we’ll have to wait and see (what Petty does). Then he referenced Joel Selwood who went at pick 7 in 2006 when asked about selecting for needs v best available. I had to double check but their first pick wasn’t until 14 so he may of been referring to pick 2 Essendon : Scott Gumbleton or pick 4 lions : Mathew Leuenbeger.

Adelaide hold picks 10, 14 and 20 and are tipped to do a trade with GWS for pick 7

The thing that stops most teams trading back is other teams coming up and poaching their guy as they move backwards.

For instance. GWS want Leake, they know if they trade back with Adelaide it probably goes Curtin, Caddy, O’Sullivan, Leake if teams hold their spots.

But if we trade to Ess spot and nab Leake then GWS are stuffed.

Given we can’t go more than 5 minutes without signalling our intentions to move up and the need to telegraph trades to sides so they’re ready to deal on the night it makes trading up very difficult.

No doubt @Ethan Tremblay will be dropping his much anticipated phantom draft in just under 12 hours 😆

The count down is on…. which draft picks won’t Ethan get wrong? Stay tuned. #ETthePhantomDraftWhisperer. #HowDoesHeDoIt?

So long as you better Twomey

If Curtin actually slides to 10 there is a reason for it, perhaps something in his testing has sent out some red flags

Yet Eagles are apparently desperate to get him.

They would probably know him the best.

Please not Nick Watson. We had the original Wizard.  Watson is a small one position forward pocket. He was not effective in the midfield this year as shown in the GF. Sure he’s got tricks but we have Kozzy and need more midfield or key back youngsters like Curtin, Sanders, Leake, O’Sullivan or Windsor.

Unless it's go home factor, which would explain why they want him, but other clubs decided to pass.

Will Lorenz will be interesting player through the draft and rookie selections.  Was at the National draft combine so obviously is on the list of a few recruiters. I think he will probably get picked but probably might be the late 3rd round or rookie. Was looking for him to do more in the national championships. Good skills.

@Nascent Good call adding this kid.  Lorenz went pick 57

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
