The real Robbo (Russell Robertson) has lashed out at Kane Cornes for his ridiculous attack on Simon Goodwin’s characterisation of Hawthorn tagger Finn Maginness as a player who doesn’t want the ball.

The only thing Kane Cornes doesn't have a problem with is Port Adelaide cheating the concussion protocol.

He is about as relevant as his footy club has been in finals this decade. 

If we had a tagger that shut down a Daicos or Neale we would be lauding them. I don’t have a problem with McGuinness trying to blanket Clarry for 3 qtrs. I am not sure if Goodwin would make the same comments again but it was great to see him deviate out of the ‘trained incredibly hard’, ‘I’m incredibly proud’ cliches for a moment. 

How is your career as a Firefighter Kane? You are such a [censored] on a daily basis, as long as Port are not involved, then you are as quiet as a Mouse.

Goodwin was right tho. McGuinness had no interest in getting the ball himself, which is why he has done such a good job shutting down players. At no point did Goodwin said he didn't do a good job, but it's much easier to tag when you don't care about winning possessions yourself, which was the point he was making.

The bottom line is, top clubs would never utilise this type of tagging role, because they would never risk playing 'a man down', they would rather just back their own systems in, while trying to limit the influence of the opposition's key players.

If we'd brought in Simon Godfrey to put a hard tag on James Worpel or Connor Nash, it would have been game over for Hawthorn because that's 1/3rd of their clearances choked up.

BUT you won't win many games against top teams which have deep midfields by doing that. Your own clearances will be flawed by having a player not involved in the ball movement, and your opposition will find ways to work around the block, meaning you've just gone full Maginot Line. (In this scenario, Petracca is the Ardennes gap)

Not to mention that in the last quarter Mitchell moved the tag off Clarry, because he obviously felt they couldn't win the game if we continued to drive so much attack from half back, so he tagged Rivers instead and Clarry spent like 10 minutes being Clarry and we win the game anyway.

You don't beat the top sides with a tag, because the top sides do not rely on one player to win games. We literally beat the top 2 teams this year without Oliver. 

It's hard to take Cornes seriously mostly because he's essentially an external part of Ports public relations team but also... he obviously says some things purely to be a point of difference to other commentators. You can tell he doesn't believe a lot of it, as he sometimes has a wry smile on his face as he's saying it. He literally can't keep a straight face.

Which means even if he makes a good point, I reflexively think 'yeah but Cornes just says anything'. Being heavily biased towards the club you played for and being a contrarian for the sake of it doesn't make a good footy journalist. 

Kane Cornes is just a shock jock really. He says controversial things just for the sake of it. Very boring! 🥱

Good on Russell "Robbo" Roberston for standing up for Simon Goodwin, Clayton Oliver and the Melbourne Football Club though!

I know "Robbo" is the MC/Host for Melbourne Demons Home Games at the MCG. He does a great job there!

However, I would love to see him more in the media. If they ever brought back a variety Football TV show (kinda like the Footy Show or Live and Kicking) then "Robbo" could easily host it and even play in a band due to his musical talents.

I don’t feel it was a criticism of the player as they follow coaches instructions. It was more aimed at the coach & good on Simon for having his say. We criticise them for being bland & then when they  give an honest answer we criticise them for that …

I'd rather Goody have played a straight bat, because it potentially brings external focus onto Clarry now. If Goody straight bats it, they have nothing to run with.

I watch clips of footy classified from time to time. The whole point of the program is to be controversial and stir up debate. I wouldn't get too caught up in it.

And i don't mind Cornes. He's not a bad analyst. Just ignore the hyperbolic stuff he comes out with. and anything he says about Port because he's hopelessly conflicted.

Berry from Brisbane tagged Oliver completely out of the game in the 2nd half of last year's finals. Got Brisbane right back in the game.

Would you play Harmes to shut down Neale at the expense of say Gus or Sparrow? 

Good luck to the Lions. They’ve lost a lot of class and pace with Ashcroft going down. Doubt they’ll play a mid in a purely negative role in finals, but it may happen again. 
With Fritta back is reduces the need to play Trac forward. So they shut down Clarry and Viney, Trac and Gus get a better run instead. I’m not worried.

Oliver being tagged by Berry was one of the big key reason why Brisbane overran us in last year's finals. Oliver was red hot in the first half and then Berry completely shut him down which put a complete dent in our midfield set up, especially aas we had Petracca already playing on one leg.

Regardless whether he's a bog ordinary footballer or not. You said teams won't tag in finals and I pointed out that Berry actually did.

So yes, teams will tag come finals. Happens every single finals series.

I dont think there was anything meant other than the obvious.. Clarry was set a heavy tag. .  Did that truly accomplish Hawthorn's goal ???  

Footy is a war of minds...  dont mind us engaging occasionally especially after we've won ;)

Which is why having spent half a season without him, our midfield will cope. And we have to be able to generate an advantage elsewhere due to that tag. Clarry plays the defensive mid for example. He is already our best tackler.

It’s why Ling was probably the best, he negated the player and got the ball himself.

If we had a decent tagger I’d want them playing every week.
