I only get to watch games on TV from here in Perth, but for the most part, when cameras focus on the coaches' box, Chocko doesn't seem present in the game or involved with players. It's just something I've noticed. Does it mean anything? ... shrug!!

Williams is constantly giving of himself.

I've seen him at trainings even giving drills and hints of footy skills to the support staff. 

He never seems to stop (not manically so), he is either doing or preparing.

Bring Howes in to trial in this role.  They are quite similar although Howes probably half a season behind at this point.  Worth a block of matches though imv

That allows McVee to move up to the wing to replace Hunter.  Hunter is completely innefective in general play and by foot.  Dumps rubbish tumble lolly pops short into the HF area pretty much every time with no penetration.

McVee then becomes more damaging and effective in terms of his ability by foot and will give us some run and carry through the middle.  Might also hit some targets on the 45 and help to change angles coming into the 50,  which we rarely ever do.  Makes us too easy to defend every week coming in in straight lines.

McVee is also a decent user if he gets near 50 vs say Rivers who just bombs it in.

Howes a VG user by foot and hand.  Howes is also capable of hitting targets inside 50 when pushing up high.

The above eliminates one more poor ball user in Hunter and potentially improves our connections forward of center x 2 !

Yep, finally someone has hit the nail on the head.

The sample size it too large for it not to be related to our game plan. We also have some terrible kicks and that's contributes. But this is essentially the issue. when you play a forward half turnover game, there will always be large numbers of the opposite in your forward.

There were 3 times when GWS took the ball from our back half and had 2 or 3 full lead up marks. When I saw that I was shocked, because I couldn't remember I single time when there was a Melbourne player in space leading up and getting the ball. It looked like they were playing a different game.

3 minutes to go and not a single defender within cooee of the goal square!  Kelly's kick bounced before going over the line... 

Its worrying if leaving the goal square undefended with mere minutes to go is our MO for protecting a small lead.

Sure we were attacking to win but leaving most of the d50 wide open made us sitting ducks for a Giant's 'out the back' goal or a Kelly long range kick.

Poor leadership by defenders for end of game defence tactics.

Not really on the players though.

They were continuing to defend the way we set up to defend, by pressing up into the forward half.

Absent a coaching directive, they weren't going to drop back into the D50 and have no influence unless GWS got the ball that deep. They were always going to sit high. 

IMO we press too high but once you accept that press, I think the blame for how sides score out the back is a coaching one, not a leadership or player one.

It’s doing my head in, how for years now we can’t seem to connect with our forward line.

Its a piece of the puzzle we can never fix.

Its funny because watching Casey and listening to the commentators say that Melbourne has an abundance of key forwards in JVR, Schache, Jefferson, Ben Brown, Fritsch, Smith, McDonald and the two Ruckmen, yet we don’t have a player in the top 10 in the AFL for goal kicking.

Only a few weeks ago we beat the number one team on the comp.

There is talent here despite our woeful forward line.

Of the seven games played interstate including Kardinia, we  put away the Eagles who are shocking and just narrowly beat the Suns.

We lost the other five.

Word to the wise....don't sell anymore home games to play interstate.

We play the big G well.

Missing Oliver is huge.

Max is having a bad season, along with Kozzie and Anb.

The Grundy Gawn combo looked awesome pre season bit never launched.

The game has passed Melksham.

Chandler needs to be dropped like four weeks ago.

I thought Goody was stuck in his ways but now he seems erratic with his throwing away the Petty experiment, dropping Tomlinson and then Jvr.

This list is in its prime, but something is not right. Fair to say we also don't have very much depth. 

Like the dogs breaking more than half a decade of drought was a momentous effort.

But it seems like now the peak has been conquered the will to continue has withered a fair bit.

How does pretty much the same bunch end up like this?. It's not like they are too old.

The Game plan stinks and its execution, even worse.Oh and before I forget too many players are overated and more are NQR! We need to put a broom through the joint.

I agree that we press too high and it is our system.

However, on field leaders have a role to play in the tactics for moment-to-moment action especially when there is no opportunity for coaches to send a runner out, which can only be when a goal is scored.

And most clubs train and train and train possible end of game scenarios so not to rely on coaches in those frantic minutes.   I would hope May and Lever have some license to employ one of those scenarios when coaching directive isn't available. 

I don't really wish to start a blaming game.  My comment on lack of on field leadership wasn't intended to blame anyone but imv a fair observation of what happened:  our system broke down.
