Goody on AFL 360 just said either McDonald or Brown will come in for Petty.

Just hope whoever it is can get their hands on the ball and have some impact.

Was lucky enough to speak to someone from the club last week.  And amongst other things, the Pies come up in our conversation and he said words to the effect of ‘we can’t wait to play them, because we think our backline and defensive structure will stack up well against them’. I replied, yeah but wouldn’t Petty need to go back against them, and he said, ‘no, Petty has been our best performing forward and we prefer him up there’.

On current form, they would smash us unfortunately

Their form line is no better than ours if you ask me.

Round 1. Defeated Geelong by 22 vs Defeated Dogs by 50 - I would argue Geelong and Dogs are on par this year

Round 2. Defeated Port by 71 at the G vs Lost to Brisbane by 11 - We had a shocker so points to the Pies

Round 3. Defeated Richmond by 14 vs Defeated Sydney by 50 - Both opposition a lot less hampered by injuries back then, but I know who is a better side right now at full strength and it's not Richmond

Round 4. Lost to Lions by 33 vs Defeated West Coast by 63 - Free swing to Dees but telling that Pies also lost to Brisbane at home which evens out round 2

Round 5. Defeated Saints by 6 points vs Lost to Essendon by 27 points - I rate both opponents equally. Pies take the points that round

Round 6. Defeated Essendon by 13 points vs Defeated Richmond by 18 points - Even result

Round 7. Defeated Adelaide by 1 point vs Defeated North by 90 points - Not exactly blowing me away with their performance over Adelaide. And a training drill for Melbourne

Round 8. Defeated Sydney by 29 vs Defeated Suns by 5 points. Sydney already depleted by then. Our win against them was a lot more impressive especially with the injuries we had at the time. Suns no easy beats especially at home

Round 9. Defeated GWS at home without Green by 65 vs Defeated Hawks by 54 points after kicking 0.5 to start the game. Much of a muchness.

The form line is very even, but statistically we are leading in more key areas, and have comfortably the best percentage.

We are about to hit a difficult month of games, but equally while we've had soft opposition we've had a really hard schedule in terms of breaks and travel. Much harder than the Pies who have only had 3 interstate trips, including Gather Round.

A lot of water to go under the bridge, but still feel like we are experimenting and things are about to get serious as we hit the bye. We will know a lot more after Kings Birthday.

Sounds like Dixon is out according to Hinkley.

Dixout!

They'll be more unpredictable however! I remember they 'invented' the dirty ball tactic of kicking it low to combat McGovern and Barass. And they came away with a convincing win, back in 2018 or 19 or so

Yeah I reckon I would have preferred Dixon in!

What we've worked on in pre-season with the fast ball movement and taking the corridor where possible, this is what has to come to the fore now. If someone like Brown comes in we need to be utilising his strengths and finding him on leads.

Hanging long balls up there and hoping we clunk a mark or get it to ground isn't going to be the way forward here.

There is predicted rain on Friday night.

Makes me now wonder whether they'll bring in Joel Smith instead for the extra speed and ground ball ability.

I think TMac is probably our best option of a lot of NQR choices. He provides the most flexibility if May or Lever get an in game injury.

I am sure many here would just love to see Joel Smith get a run up forward, BUT only if he is match fit.  He has had (I think) only one competitive outing in nigh on 12 months.

Smith has played two VFL games and just had a bye when he would have been put through a match load of running.

The decision on who comes in for Petty will have a lot to do with how we plan for Aliir.

I think I would go for Brown to stretch their defence and play Van Rooyen on Aliir.

Who is in for Sparrow?I want Harmes

You would have a yet unproven Petty as forward over a proven premiership forward who kicked 3 goals in Ben Brown?

Yeah right. We need BB firing if we are to win another flag period!

So possibly Dixon & def Todd Marshall out for them ?

Marshall is a definite out.

Dixon I will presume as such considering it was supposedly a minor strain to his quad at training last week.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
