I'm guessing you watched the game from The Abbey Earl?

Yes I managed to make my way up to one of the spires to watch the second half on my phone between ceremonies. Big day, what with me riding in to the Abbey the King’s Cavalry and me holding the Royal Sceptre aloft!

Didn’t Bowey play on Rosas?

He did. I’m shocked anyone is giving him votes. Had a shocker.

Hard to pick six really on a day when quite a few were below their best.

6 Gawn - steadied the ship at vital moments.

5 Brayshaw - unspectacular but worked his socks off.

4 Viney - tigerish as always in a struggling midfield.

3 Oliver - did his share of the hard yakka.

2 Bowey - gave some more illustrious names a lesson in ball distribution under pressure.

1 Chandler - purely on the ground of his outstanding goal just when it was needed.

From the Director's chair;

Daniel Turner must have run over the team mascot. Keeps getting thrown to wolves. Debut game last year's Queen's Birthday concussed by a rampaging Chubb safe. Late inclusion for this game. He gets locked in the gorilla's cage with Levi Casboult. Poor bloke must be thinking 'third time lucky', "maybe I'll get an opponent where I can successfully compete given my experience and physical abilities."

Opposition Hyperbole watch;

Gold Coast Suns have some top draft picks. Lukosius has a nice accurate long goal kick, flashes in and out of the play. Rowell scurries around the pack like hyperactive sunburnt crab, but seems lost outside his environment. Anderson moves well and certainly gets a lot of the ball without too much menace. Ben King would hardly register a blip today, except he was given free kicks which enabled him to kick two goals. Seem like a bunch of nice boys.

Adjudication;

The bounce is dead.

Broadcasters;

Dunstall and Russell pension them off.

  • REPORT: West Coast

    On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

    Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
