Also, I’m not sure that the quality of the competition or product would be diminished.
Sure, it’d feel unfair that your wage went from $450,000 to $200,000 but that $200,000 would beat $110,000 in an office, $65,000 in a factory and $200,000 fly in fly out working a 60-80 hour week.

I think it would be a great thing to see the decline of capitalism in AFL for the betterment of society. I’m not talking pushing ‘causes’ because of the good optics - I’m talking about the direct impact that gambling has inter generationally.

What about your good self? Would you be prepared to pay more?

Fair question. I'm an MCC member who also takes out MFC membership. I could afford to pay more, so probably would. However, my concern if the price goes up is not about me but about those who might struggle to pay more. What I don't want to see is the game being priced out of reach for many families so that we end up with the "theatre-goer" crowd rather than families that we see at games today. I think the loss of sports betting revenue creates a risk. The question is which risk do we prefer to take.

Kayo is a complete joke. Not worth 50 cents

Games can still be changed days out

Nothing has taken place yet

They call it “Gather Round” but it’s not on Air

Can you provide an example where the AFL has changed the time of the game during the week purely to suit the broadcasting channel??

Looking at Goodies press conference I think Petty will move back to replace Hibbo who is out and they will bring BBB in to play three tall forwards. Given the forecast rain and being the third game at the ground not too sure about this strategy.

No need to change that.

You either plug in Ch7 Cables or Foxtel. This doesn’t need months of planning

The Top 4 teams are being penalised

It’s a joke. The whole thing

Bowza has done it again

It's the time slot that's been allocated by the AFL. The broadcasting (channel 7) go off the agreement contract of what their time slot arrangements is from the AFL. Friday and Thursday night games, a Saturday night game and then the Sunday afternoon are pretty much 7's locked timeslot.

Channel 7 have never had a 4:10 Saturday twilight game time slot in place, ever. Fox have always covered this one as well as the Sunday twilight with St Kilda and Collingwood.

It'd not as easy as just "changing cables" purely because this would have been the contract that would have been agreed on when the fixture came out as @Bring-Back-Powell was getting at.

I think Goody was having a little dig at this in his presser, love his expression when he says “ not often we play a curtain raiser”. I love this about Goody, he’s aware we deserve more respect than we get in the AFL, premiership team, finished in the top two two seasons in a row, looking one of the best teams this year also, still consigned to a curtain raiser for pretenders Port.

It’s a shame Hibbos out as he’s the perfect build for a role on Stringer. Oh well.

If not too wet:

Out: Hibberd

In: Brown (Petty back)

If wet (likely):

Out: Hibberd

In: JJ, Laurie also in as sub, Petty back, two relatively mobile tall forwards in JVR and TMac in the wet. Kozzie to play more forward with JJ more midfield.

This looms as a danger game for me, Essendon have troubled us, even the last two years, when they were rubbish! If we can win this and get to 4-1 with Gawny, Salem, Hibbo, Woey all slowly coming back we’re doing very well. Frightening to think we’ve been missing May, Kozzie, Gawn, Salem, Brown, Fritsch, Viney at different times this season and we could still start 4-1. Go Dees just win!

OMG, Essendon and Collingwood aren’t on FTA!1!1!1!1 What a disgrace because I am a Big Team nuffie who gets what I want all the time.

Some of the nonsense in this thread is making me like the Gather Round more!

Can we talk about the actual bloody game?

Bombers are better. Stringer is still fat. Lever is sore apparently. Petty down back surely.

Yes it is as easy as Changing Cables   They all use the same Cameras.
I worked on many outside broadcasts.
Please don’t tell me TV Stations are not flexible to time slots. They always have standby programs ready
The Reason for this Farce is for one reason only. To STOP PEOPLE WATCHING NRL. That is it.
all 9 games should be on Free to Air, all 9 games should be on Cable

Blanket Coverage for 1 weekend

The weather in Adelaide will suit Jordon just sayin....

I don't want to see betting advertising banned but I want to see it regulated much more. Limit the number of betting ads per TV/radio commercial break, signage at grounds, web advertising. Make it a matter of public interest and not make so many advertising slots available to betting companies.

With less advertising slots available for betting companies, crank up the price to take out an ad. He with the highest bid wins and gets that valuable exposure for their company as opposed to competing with 4 others that day, there are plenty that would be able to afford it.

It will be government driven but what other choice is there?

Really!

The four or five games, when not a home game or not broadcast on FTA, I could pay what, $300 for a stream service.

When I have to watch my spending, it seems a bit extravagant.

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-04-12/one-million-in-poverty-nsw-gap-worsening-sydney/102206262

Assume the same in Vic, as 90% of the benefits/profits of a wealthy society go to the already wealthy top 10%

Lobby groups and media, have really stuffed us, by skewing legislation and public opinion towards a mean hearted, selfish society.

Probably around half that if you  stop it at season's end

I'm amused by the angst associated with the TV broadcasting arrangements. It's not that long ago we were complaining that we weren't getting enough FTA because we were rubbish. We can't have it both ways. If poorer quality teams are to be given some FTA coverage, the better teams will occasionally have to miss out.

No. This is “Gather Round” all teams should be given full coverage.
Not everyone wants to go to Adelaide

You make a good point.

Mind you, I suspect the SA Government would prefer less TV coverage to encourage more visitation.

could see a few changes

Lever... rested

Petty back

Someone for Hibberd

Melksham forward if wet or as sub with Jordon in the starting line up

Cannot see a role for all 3 of JVR, TMac and BBB. One has to miss

A pity Laurie has not been trialed down back as well as up forward. A swinging flanker could be a very useful back up. Same for Jordon... could he replace Hibberd occasionally?

I think you'll find that it is not the direct revenue from the betting companies that the AFL and NRL wish to protect (as welcome as I am sure that it is). It's the revenue that the Free-to-Air broadcaster can make from betting advertising that allows the AFL and NRL to be paid massive TV rights money. If betting advertising stops the TV rights revenue will plummet.

I'm curious to know whether everyone who wants betting advertising curtailed or even abolished would continue to hold that view if it meant the quality of the product was diminished (because players would have to be paid less) or the price of entry to games was significantly increased to overcome the shortfall. Or both.

So, how about it Demonlanders. If you have previously said that betting advertising on TV should be banned, would you be prepared to pay more - probably much more - to go to the footy?

LDVC,  this is a similar argument to the cessation of tobacco advertising.

NB.  Sport did not stop, go broke or charge much more for attendance. Prices have gone up even with gambling revenue.

Why not, we just played two weeks with JVR, TMac and Petty all in the forward line, plus Grundy rucking. The only difference will be Brown swapping with Petty.

Ultimately once Gawn's back we can't play them all but right now we can probably play them all, particularly if Lever's out as I'd then argue for Petty to go back to the backline.

This has nothing to do with what SA want. They get a free hit.

This is all blanket broadcasting against The NRL

That too.
I am sure the AFL executive will have 5-6 star Free Accommodation over the entire weekend

Exactly. Cricket was Sponsored by B&H Cigarettes for years until it was banned.
There are many Companies who would step up their exposure, if Gambling and Betting ads were banned, as they should be.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show.
