If that Fritta shot went through it would have been 20 goals in a game two weeks in a row. Not bad for a team that has no forward line and can't score.

I reckon it did go through if the only angle they showed was the one they used to say it didn’t. Shocking quick and wrong call.  A review of the review should be called for by the AFL Iif it had any spine.

Is Bailey Fritsch the most clutch player inside forward 50?

He is easily the most underrated forward in the game.

Clean ball user in scruffy situations thats for sure. Hes very consistent.

...and just a superb kick for goal.

To my eye, Tom Sparrow was excellent too.

The young guys really stepping up. Sparrow, Rivers and McVee. Don't you love good drafting and development? 👌

Didn't love our fumbling, but loved our defensive intent and our slingshot the other way.

Happy to bank that win and move on.

And I love it how the commentators played it down by saying how it was a nice quick call! Surely that goes in the same bucket of nump commentary when someone fumbles mark of the year over the goal line and they want it paid.

The young players know the competition for spots is on and they’re all delivering.
Sparrow was very very good. He played on Gaff who did nothing. McVee is some sort of revelation. Rivers has really taken his game to another level and Chandler makes me happy. Has been sensational.

When Max comes back, do we start him forward/back and give Grundy starting ruck?

Yes Max is the #1 ruck in the game, but Grundy provides some uncertainty for opposition and Max’s body could really benefit from not being #1 ruck the longer the season goes, then come in really fresh.

Memo to AFL

If you're going to do goal line reviews get a camera and a replay that inserts the goal line

that shot on the final score was atrocious

Yep. There was another yesterday which a couple of us highlighted on the non-MFC thread. Unacceptable.

Need a line like the ones they draw for VAR offsides in the EPL/SPL. System needs to be [censored]-proof because it’s currently administered by idiots. Fritta’s was a goal.

Plenty of experimental time today.

On a side note, I know footy is a tough game, but gees it really broke my heart to see Hunt so sad after the game. He was a real favourite of mine at Melbourne. Always tried his hardest and clearly didn’t want to leave.
I wish him all the best. Thought he was very good today!

That moment when McVee took the mark at half back and took off through the middle. It was just natural instincts and going with your gut. He made the decision that split second quicker than most and it helps he can deliver a kick too.

For all the whining about the umpires (not entirely unjustified), we won the free kick count 22 to 16.

One normal maggot and one very good umpiress

It's funny because the line they draw down in VAR would actually be much better suited for the goal line in AFL.

Disgracefully rushed decision

I never get happy when old players goal against us. I was happy when he did  I don't think he would have been that happy to be playing against us at all.

In order to get the best out of Grundy I’d imagine he’ll be our number 1 ruck even when Gawn returns. Say 75/25 ruckwork.

As we’ve seen the last fortnight, he’s a magnificent ruckman, and ruck only.

Trent Rivers has arrived.

27 touches at 78% with 6 tackles.

Trent Rivers is THE next superstar at Melbourne. Let it be recorded that I wrote that.

If he has another 50 goals season he will be hard to ignore as an AA.

An absolute killer.

The true tragedy of his career is that he will never have the joy of receiving a pass from himself into the 50.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
