that's just an outstanding banner - great work demon army 👍

Yeah great thread. I always watch the banners go up when at games but I don’t get to them as often anymore.

Thanks WCW love all the work you and your colleagues do, and thanks for sharing on here as we can’t always see all the details of the banner at the ground.

What’s that I hear y’all say? How do we make the banner? Well, now that you’ve asked…

🎶 this is how we do it… 🎶

E9C7ECA7-BC0A-41FE-B0D4-B08D12BD0BBF.thumb.jpeg.1be1798b43d35d290aaca5c38b54cb55.jpeg

First we make the backing. This type of backing ⬆️ is called a weave, as opposed to a plain backing which is lengths of crepe paper stuck together side by side (as in Round 2 above). A weave is necessary as reinforcement for when there’s a graphic to be included because the material on which the graphic is printed is very heavy. Nobody, but NOBODY enjoys making a weave. It’s murder on the knees and back.

76B6474B-5B1A-447F-8358-4901BFBB0209.thumb.jpeg.5d28dbe23fb645a1c56eed114b95038d.jpeg

Next we tape, tape, tape. Every join: horizontal and vertical, and corner to corner diagonally. Then we walk, walk, walk the tape down kinda like taking a roadside sobriety test in the U.S.

0F5BAC41-7465-4604-A21D-383B16E91BF7.thumb.jpeg.edd8692c42d9eab2e3c5fc1e17ec0696.jpeg

And a penguin waddle when walking the horizontal and vertical tape. ⬆️

The four corners are heavily taped, again for reinforcement. And of utmost importance… the centre of the bottom five rows are NOT taped since clotheslining our players as they run through is not ideal. 😁

Fun fact: We actually have a dress code…

•Strictly NO SHOES. Socks only. (MFC socks, while not compulsory, are worn by most of us coz nuffies abound.)
•No skirts or dresses. At times it resembles the world’s largest game of Twister hence wearing pants and shorts are the go.

Tune in next week for Stencilling, cutting out and sticking down letters and numbers!!!

Well done WCW but is there ever talk of changing the banner culture.

Cannot think of another major sport that has the banner habit. Back in the 70's banners were only for finals and mega milestone games. Now they are full size for every game

What level of recycling occurs WCW.

As I understand it Eagles use an inflatable tunnel

They don't seem to feature much on TV these days which I expect is due to the advertising they contain and TV not wanting to give the sponsors a free plug

I can't think of another sport that enables supporters to volunteer their time to do something like this for the players, but still, it's Demonland, gotta find something to whine about, hey....

Great job WCW and Demon Army really appreciate your efforts and as previous mentioned you can’t always get a clear view at the ground 👍💕

That’s interesting, Kat. I didn’t read Diamond Jim’s post as a whine sesh. But now that you mention it, seems it might be. Oh well, we love making banners, the players love running out to a banner and our Club is more than happy to keep the tradition going.

To answer your question DJ: unfortunately because of the tape which is stuck to pretty much everything, banners are not recyclable. We recycle what we can, eg the cutoffs from the sheets of cardboard from which the letters are cut. The graphics (such as Clarrie’s on Sunday’s banner) are delicately removed and offered to the player’s family. Soz @Demon Dynasty but Michelle is Clarrie’s mum so she got first dibs on it. 😛

Some families are super keen to be given the used graphic. Tmac’s parents made sure they got the one from his 200th last year.

Then there’s the Frittatas. Bayley’s 100th graphic is folded up and stored in the garage of his parents’ house. He’s gonna mount it on his own garage or entertainment room wall… one day. 😁

@WalkingCivilWar Are the players' told where to run through the banner for the purposes of avoiding decapitation?

Yeah, they all gather at the middle of the banner and know to run through that part only. This is my personal fave moment of banner raising since we yell out encouraging things while they’re congregating and the players always give us a thumbs up or a smile or a nod. Some banner raisers even declare their undying love for a particular player. Not me of course, pfft I’m more refined than that.

Fantastic.

i have a book of Banners from 1988 somewhere at home. I must find it.
They have been such a huge part of the game

@WalkingCivilWar who are our next milestone players? I am specially curious of those joining the 100th with the club (like Milkshake). Father - Son picks are very important.

We do indeed love making banners, I look forward to our Thursday night weekly banner making session.  I did make a video a couple of weeks ago showing how we make them, I'm trying to upload it here but it's telling me the file is too big....

Love the passion, dedication and all the blood sweat and tears, you folks do us all proud!

I'd come and offer my services but I haven't got a pair of socks without holes in them🙄

I saw your vid, Kat but also found it too big to post. All good though, I’m happy to share our trade secrets with the awesome peeps on DL the good ol’ fashioned way… talking. A lot. 😁

Never mind, Kat. Drip-feeding the process is waaaay more fun. 😝

Seeya Thursday! 💕

I read DJ's post and after reading your post I re read it several times and at no point did I see it as a Winge, it was just polite enquiry.

I guess we read things the way we want to.

I like the fact you are still traditionalist and use crepe paper, I see the other team's cloth flappy run throughs and think they are so lame. A huge shout out to all the team that do these. I also like the comradery there is between other teams cheer squads in relation to the banners. I know you all appreciate how much work goes into them (even the opposition's)

talk to demonland. maybe you can email it to him and he can load it up?

just a few curiosity questions

  • where do you find such a big space?
  • must be costly, how do you fund the banners?
  • do the club provide the graphics and the printing of them?
  • how long does a banner take?
  • how do you transport banner when interstate?
  • lots more questions but that'll do for now

That is a big milestone.

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
