Sooking it up with the Tommo haters.

Why? It's his first game!

We're good enough to keep playing him and develop in the ones

I fear for Kossie at tribunal. Did not look good

He hit him in the left shoulder, if he had of hit him in the head at that force he would still be out to it.

Chandler could prove to be a real damaging small forward for us but for a left footer his accuracy is not great yet. Should have snagged 3 tonight.

100%. He’s quick and doesn’t seem to have a problem getting the ball, just got to finish off his good work.

I’m pretty sure Rioli only kicked 40+ a couple times in his whole career

He played in a few flags though and that probably means much more in the end.

Kossie should take note and sign on the dotted line for the Red and Blue for life!

Made one bad error in my book, missing that goal after the siren under a bit of pressure.  But asides from that I thought he was pretty impressive tonight.

Look at the vision mate. Made contact with head causing it to pivot back quickly. Might've got shoulder first, but clearly contacted head

3 day old daughter thought we looked pretty good tonight and it was nice for Winnie to end the night a winner! She missed the final siren after cracking it early in the last when she needed a feed.

BBB an underrated star. Liked what I saw of McVee and Sparrow too!

Pretty decent to put the Dogs in a spliff and still have Fritta, Salo, Viney and May to return!

You look at the vision, didn't touch his head, the head went backwards just in reaction to the shoulder being forced back.

As i said a hit that hard to the head would of knocked him out.

Yeah, accuracy is a worry, tackles well but maybe not quite up to it, liked judd mcvee's game

7 goal win, stress free final quarter and a rousing rendition of grand old flag. a thoroughly enjoyable night at the G

Tommo solid, Chandler worked hard and made some valuable contributions and McVee was steady. Incisive ball movement and F50 play much much better than last year (no dump kicks to the pocket thank christ)

Still plenty to work on. the first 10 mins of the second quarter was very untidy. We went to sleep and could have fallen well behind if the doggies kicked straight but thankfully Max and Trac got going and we never looked back.

Kossie is a star. Hassled and harried the dogs defenders all night. A real livewire. Pity about the likely suspension but we've shown we can handle absences.

Great to have the footy back and great to get the season started with a win.

Go Dees!

Tomlinson 19 possessions and 7 marks. Essentially Steven May stats.

Massive kudos for his performance tonight and has proven to be a good insurance policy.

Looked like Tomo pre knee!

What a way to start the season! We looked so much sharper than we did towards the end of 2022. We were faster with our ball movement and our forwardline looked very settled.

Gawn was simply outstanding. Lever was BOG in my opinion. I lost count of the number of goals he saved, especially during the second quarter.

Also a shout out to Tomlinson. People were questioning his selection but he made a huge difference to our backline.

I know there were a lot of names tonight.

But holy dog, Lever is something else.

Plays bigger than his frame suggests, fends off, gets to the right spot and has a really big kick.

What a player.

Looked far more comfortable than last year and credit to him.

Better at ground level too.

Maybe Caminiti at the Saints is just really good? Reports are he gave Weitering trouble.

Yeah he played well! I remember watching him in the practice matches miss a couple that were very gettable. He gets enough of the ball so if he can tighten up his set shots and out through the easier ones, he's capable of getting a couple every week.

Great atmosphere at the ground tonight. What was the crowd number

48,103

It took Collingwood about 10-15 rounds before the run and gun stuff clicked. It worked sometimes tonight, but it's still not quite instinctive to give the handball and move the ball quickly with overlap, ala Collingwood.

It was a good start however and winning by 8 goals without Fritsch, Viney, May and Salem, and an incredibly fumbly first half, we showed how powerful and devastating we can be when we're clean at ground balls. Our game flows beautifully from there, and with our midfield, if we can start to roll in this quicker, more corridor orientated gear, I think we're going to be very difficult to beat.

It was obvious we were trying to be more attacking, which resulted in some unusual turn over kicks in the defensive half. It's still a case of getting to know the right time to flick the switch and go, because I think ultimately Collingwood's model is all duck, no dinner, it's one style, on the whole time. If we're going to make to the GF, we need to be able to play fast when appropriate and conserve energy at other times.

All in all though, a great team win.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
