Trade Rumours 2023

Featured Replies

Any compensation pick given by the AFL should have to be used as that pick and not traded. These lower clubs keep getting AFL help and just give it straight to the powerhouse clubs. That trade Gold Coast did last year was a disgrace.  Now North want to give up three or four 1st rounders for one pick.

Difference was when Frawley left we weren’t risking anything we were basically bottom of the ladder and the only way was up. Granted it worked out as we got hogan and then may for hogan.

Petty still has 2 more years on his contract, why rush into a trade when we have no obvious replacement we can always revisit next year once things become clearer and maybe we have a trade target.

Even picks 10 and 20 even if possible aren’t the most alluring picks we could do better next year or the year after if petty stays fit and counties to improve.

Sweet Garbo.

You're not understanding.

This is not about 'rushing' into a trade. I know as much or as little as you!!!!

Here's what we've heard from the media: Petty has a desire to get back to SA at some point. And Adelaide are hell bent on getting him this trade period and have offered what myself and many believe to be overs in pick 10, 20 and McAdam.

Now.

If that is true, we'd be a poorly run club not to entertain this offer given the options it gives us going forward.

What are those options, (everyone keeps asking me). I don't [censored] know!!!!

BUT!!

What I do know is that we already have a strong draft hand. We have a fantastic list manager and recruiter and have an enormously positive track record in this space.

What people on demonland need to get in their heads is what our future looks like post Gawn and May. Where will our list be? What kind of pain needs to be inflicted now to give us a positive looking future?

It honestly seems like nobody is thinking that way.

I don't care if we don't make finals next year or the year after if it means we can have another four cracks at it in three-four years time.

You also have to look at what that kind of thing does for the growth of the club as far as new supporter and membership goes...

I don't get why people don't think of this?

You want flags now and only now?!

We just missed out on two golden opportunities. Time to look forward with this list and entertain any and all offers that could benefit our club going forward.

Sometimes I think of this place as being a cult. And Saty runs it.

Saty would still have Jordie McKenzie, Rohan Bail and Matthew Bate as our leadership group promising that they're improving every pre-season.

(all the while we'd be bottom of the ladder losing games by 100 points).

I doubt the veracity of this, but have been told we might make a move for GWS first pick & Nick Heyne’s salary, then Petty to move for one of Adelaide’s key forwards (Fogarty/Thilthorpe) plus McAdam.

Would give us more ammo for pick 1, or a suite of early picks if not.

The other positive being that Heyne could temporarily fill a Petty-sized hole in our defense.

I’ve been banging on about this move for days. Glad to hear it may have some action as for me it’s an absolute no brainer.

What club would sign off on North ending up with picks 1, 2 and 3?

Go home North, you're drunk!

This place is crazy, honestly. We were so close to making a Grand Final. Without Petty. What's going on here?!

No, Petty was on our list for the season.  And with Petty we may have well won a GF so why trade a player who is so structurally important.

I'm fine trading Petty if there is an outcome that replaces him and puts us in a better position but to be taken seriously I've got to see the better position.

Surely North are making this a pisstake:

Letting this marinate for a while, North’s approach would appear to align with my original thoughts on acquiring pick 4 from GC - if they are desperate to move the pick, they’ll take the best offer available. In spite of insulting offers, they won’t cut off their nose to spite their face.

So North are conducting a slow auction. They have the picks to beat anyone else’s bid. Now they lowball, wait for a better offer to come in, then decide if they want to beat that offer. Slightly. No need to sell the farm. Westcoast know that if they want to move pick 1, it’s likely North will have the best offer unless another club loses their mind.

I don’t think you’re the only one to find GWS pick appealing in conjunction with a salary dump. I myself had that thought as many others would have. And connecting the dots with Petty isn’t a long bow either.

If there’s any truth to it, then obviously our footy dept thought so too.

Not sure what you’re saying here? You can predict the future (of rumours)?

or that someone at the club read your post too?

Or that it’s a complete fabrication (likely) but also unoriginal?

You've misread my post.

I made mention of this as a hypothetical in a previous post a day or so ago to cover for Petty (if by chance he left).

Of course I'm not the only one that thought of this, I only made mention of it as one of many examples of how we could cover for Petty's absence (in a hypothetical world) in response to a poster who again couldn't fathom how we could possibly cover a Petty loss.

I know little.

But I can think of more than much of Demonland. Thank God.

That is exactly how you play this. It’s for Norf to lose. Guess they’d do this with Pick 11 as well.

@Redleg has also proposed this in the past...

You would think clubs out of respect for the industry should just offer what they believe is fair value. Otherwise if I am West Coast I would close the door on that club and ask them not to return.

The obsession with "winning trades" to make clowns like Dodoro or Justin Reid relevant is strange when selecting talent is the greater skill.

Out of interest would you trade Petty for JUH at the Bulldogs?

Makes sense for both clubs

In theory, but how does that deal work? Petty goes to the Bulldogs or do Adelaide give picks to the Bulldogs?

Just a straight swap between Dogs and us with nominal picks (if required). They're going to be on similar money next contract. Dogs desperate for defence. JUH a little light bodied as a Petty forward replacement but an exceptional prospect.

Doesn't address the Petty go home factor but in my imaginary world if clubs could trade players it makes sense

Makes sense in that the dogs want backs/Dees want forwards but there is a material difference in their market value, surely…

Well, then that doesn't work. I'd only trade Petty if he wants to go back (I know, I know) to SA.

Yes, but in basic terms, WC wouldn’t accept pick 5 from us purely based on the club offering pick 4 making an insulting offer the day before.

They won’t cut off their nose to spite their face.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
