Trade Rumours 2023

Chandler is 23 years (Roo is 20) old and plays exclusively as a forward who struggled to get near it back half of the year… if he ran out of gas I am officially worried.

edit; for reference Bobby Hill and Toby Bedford are also 23 years old and those two were in peak form come finals.

Bedford had just an ok finals series, and Chandler edged him for goals anyway.
Age is irrelevant. Chandler has played 33 games. Hill has played 65.

This season Chandler averages more score involvements, more tackles and more marks than Hill. Hill averages 1.4 goals a game and Chandler 1.

Their stats are almost identical in fact.

A small forward role is the most difficult position to play in modern footy.
Charlie Cameron IMO is the best small forward in the league. He’s also 29 and has been playing this role for over 200 games.

We have one of best small forwards in the league already in Kozzy. Another 37 goals this year. We just need another Kozzy and and KPF that can kick his 40 odd too.

Chandler had a great start to the season and 24 goals is a decent return, but he had two good stretches (rounds 1-8 and rounds 19-23) where essentially pretty much all his goals came in. But he also had 12 games without scoring a goal. That's just not good enough.

@binman's of the view we need more goals from midfield. I'm of the view we need more goals from our forwards, particularly our smalls, as well.

Yeah, he needs to find consistency. The back end of his season though was like liability type stuff IMO. That is harsh, but if he could maintain that first half of his season, he'd be an elite small in the game.

He went missing far too often in the second half of the year though and failed to hit the scoreboard.

We do have to be mindful that he's gone from a few games to a whole season, week in, week out. McVee and JVR struggled at times in 2023 too, so it's all natural. But their drop off didn't seem to be as marked. That said, perhaps that's more about the position Kade plays.

He was a beneficiary of our more open game style earlier in the year. Hard worker gets a lot of good looks unmarked on the way back to goal. Like so many of our forwards, struggles in congestion or to beat a man 1v1, which doesn't bode well for our status quo defensive game style or the way the game is played in finals. Not uncommon for small forwards though.

Schultz wants to come home because he’s desperately home sick. He’s also demanding to play for Collingwood.

So which is it? Is he home sick or does he want to play for Collingwood?

(Welcome to the modern day player)

Desperately homesick and demanding to come home ey?

Or.

He's coming home, (for reasons you nor I have any idea about).

And he's 'requested' a trade to Collingwood or has nominated them as his club of choice, as all players have the right to do.

Ahhh sounds so different when you don't exaggerate.

I'd add that chandler didn't kick a goals in either final, when goals were gold.

Goals from small forwards often make a difference in big games - it's their time to shine.

I hope he can go up a level, but I'm not convinced he will.

How the hell has Essendon become a destination club? They were woeful at the end of the year. I hope we don't go with any 30-year-olds like Bruest, Hawkins, and so on. Invest in youth. If Mathieson comes to the club I might just give it away worst player I have seen.

I don't mind McAdam if you think he is a better version of Chandler and Spargo. Fullarton isn't a bad idea as second ruck playing predominantly in the reserves. I thought Schache could do that not sure why he is still on our list.

B: McVee, May, Lever

HB: Rivers, D.Turner, Bowey

C: Langdon, Oliver, Hunter

HF: Petracca, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F: Fritsch, Petty, Pickett

FOLL: Gawn, Brayshaw, Viney

IC: Salem, Sparrow, McAdam, Smith

SUB: Chandler

EMERG: Spargo, Woewodin, Laurie

Casey

B: K.Turner, Adams, K.Brown

HB: Howes, Tomlinson, Draft Pick

C: Woewodin, Laurie, Draft Pick

HF: Chandler, McDonald, Spargo

F: Jefferson, B.Brown, Schache

FOLL: Fullerton, Moniz-Wakefield, Draft Pick

IC: Melksham, Sestan, Verrall, Farris-White

That gives us 2 picks 5 and 13 and 1 rookie, unless they think K.Brown will be rookied then that's 3 picks 5, 13 and 24. Melksham will be rookied and D.Turner will go on the senior list.

He should have kicked that goal against Carlton that was a bad miss.

They’re meant to be a similar player - good goal craft and the ability to work hard both ways. Kade had a hugely disappointing end to the year.

Disappointing second half aside from maybe one match where he hit the scoreboard.

If he isn't averaging a goal or two most matches i'm not sure what weapons he's bringing and can't see how he holds his place on the list beyond 24.

Laurie & AMV must also be on their last hoorah next season surely.

if we really do go to the draft with picks 5 and 13, then i expect one of them will be in our starting 23 immediately - they should be more than talented enough - push smith to sub for mine, and whack a talented kid into the starting 22

i see amw as a half-forward who works up and down the ground, not a mid, while woewodin should be inside mid rotating forward from next season on

based on this, we look light on for small defenders - brown isn't one like his dad was, based upon underage football

we also look top heavy with experienced but underwhelming experienced talls in the front half for casey, which will make it difficult to develop jefferson

I put Moniz-Wakefield in the middle because we have too many small forwards. If I had my way I’d delist Schache and put Moniz-Wakefield forward pocket.

There aren't many fwds averaging 1.5 goals a game. Particularly small fwds

Not saying he has to kick the average of 1 to 2 (1.5) every match Jnr.   What i'm saying is if he isn't at least kicking a goal (minimum) in say 3 out of 5 then what else is he bringing to the table and that his second half last season was a long way off the level.  Consistency is key at AFL level if we're going to keep up and/or edge ahead of the best clubs.

Difficult posi to play i get it but there's always room for improvement and we can't have players going missing for large chunks of a season.  Goody did say we need to be uncompromising yes?  And part of his mantra at he end of 2020 was "ruthless".  I assume that's still in the mix?

Schache is extremely fortunate to be still on the list.  Perplexing decision by all within the FD.

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
