Yep, watch the AFL change the rules. Bet they cut out discounts on points for Academy and FS draft picks.

I reckon the odds of McLean coming to us as part of the Grundy trade is a fair chance.  He played 22 games in the ruck and fwd, kicked 21 goals. He won't be playing much with Grundy there.  Only 24.  Him and Gawn would work nicely together

197cm 99kg about to enter his prime.  Swans have a lot of talls

If not him, then one of their tall fwds.  They will have Reid, McDonald and Amartey. Can't really play all three

Or even throw in the unknown Jack Buller. 199cm fwd/ruck. 22yo, done well in the WAFL last year apparently.

McLean recently signed a contract for at least 2 years so he won't be part of any swap or deal.

I wonder if we'd have a look at Ladhams? he's more of a forward ruck and likely falling down the pecking order at the Swans

Don't  get involved He is trouble. Just when Maxy might be unavailable Ladhams is likely to be out suspended by the Tribunal. He is another Pruess perennially out when he is needed. Not a great player either, if he was any good why did Kenny let him leave Port?

Nibbler is a certainty for top 10 in the b&f.

Should we be looking at Lachie Keefe for short term ruck backup while we look for a long term solution?

Not the worst suggestion either. But more of a reserve Back than a goal kicking ruck resting forward!!

Bit like Tommo I suspect pace not his best asset but is solid in body snd now in mind.

I'd say never.

Kalani will be a gun bookmark it. Perhaps more KP than ruck

At the moment we are looking at

Grundy to Swans for early second round pick 22 is

Jordon to Swans hopefully for after second round pick 33 is

Mcadam in, I think the pick we get for Jordon does this deal

Harmes still looking, unfortunately for Harmes he is worth more to the club than what we will get in return unless it is a part of a package to get a player in or advance our second round pick.

Then we add in pick swapping that may net up another first round pick.

Pretty big couple of weeks coming up

Would we swap a couple of second rounders for Ports future 1st?  They get currency to bring in their 3 targets, we cash in some of this year for next.

Death ride Port next year! I like it. Do it MFC.

We will be getting nothing for Jordan. He’s a free agent.

We're still eligible for free agency compensation should his contract warrant it.

Damo, not sure how much you can read into it.

IF ...

a lot of the pre-trade and national draft period talk among rival clubs is to be believed

THEN ...

the Eagles won’t be taking Harley Reid.

What if the reason Footscray want pick 4 is to trade this to WCE for pick 1 and 19 for pick 4 and Naughton.

That will give WCE Curtin and Naughton

Bulldogs Reid and Croft.

If the bulldogs think Naughton will leave as free agent next year, get something this year.  WCE then remove Freo from FA next year and they have cleared a bit of salary cap space to make this happen.

Scary the dogs can really set themselves up for next 10 years with NGA pick before rule was changed, and father son picks, add in Reid as well.

Would not be surprised if we only recruit McAdam and put a full premium on the draft in getting in as much young talent as possible.

Tend to agree.... there's not much else available. (Save for a back up ruck of the Preuss type)

We may even not take up all our list spots if TMac and BBB also retire

I don't think there is such a pick.

It's start of 2nd round or end of 2nd round, which would be about 44-45, after after pp's and matching.

I think we are a chance of start of 2nd round, which could be about 22-23. Probably need good money and few years, already is younger than most FA's and a premiership player, which will help.

We get a compo pick.

We still need a backup ruck and maybe we go to state and country leagues for a player.

Aside from getting a mature aged ruckman, that's the way I see it.

If we continue to bring in mature aged players from other clubs, we'll continue to lose younger talent like Bedford and JJ, because they can't see a pathway into the seniors.

We need some elite junior talent to be pushing the under performing players in the seniors. Our draft hand this year is our opportunity of obtaining elite youngsters.

Five clubs pitched to JJ, so I don't think he would have accepted a nothing contract.

Swans have cap space with Buddy, Hickey and a few others leaving.

I would rather we draft in as many young players as is possible.

Off topic, Sean Campbell won the competition best player second year in a row WRFL second division last night, I think that is 3 out of 4 years.

Surely Naughton would have to agree to go

A ruckman is an absolute must. Would be straight up list management negligence to go in to next year with Max, Schache, Verrall and not a genuine back up ruck.

Key forward should be a must, but I’m wondering if they address it with train on players rather than making a move. Give me the 3 best delisted/state leaguers/overlooked kids and let them battle it out over summer.

The draft has always made sense for mids and runners apart from 1-2 cheap back ups if they fit just to fill the list turnover.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front.  They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

  • POSTGAME: West Coast

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
