Not sure what our Cap situation is like but i reckon we'd be crazy if we aren't viewing Ben McKay as a potential long term replacement for Steven May

I'm sure someone will suggest it but i don't think we should be looking at Gresham as a potential Kozzie replacement if he decides to go

we've got 3 first round picks including next years to throw around so no doubt we will have a pop at Ben King

It would be hard to be a talented kid from Melbourne, drafted by the Hawks and then want out to another Melbourne team within a couple years to chase success.  It's never a great look - especially in the eyes of the supporters who hold long memories.  **cough  Howe cough**

At least if you're an interstate player, you can drop the 'go home' factor in to escape if you like giving supporters a little understanding.

The one thing the Hawks will be able to offer is some serious $$ to any kids with talents.  I don't see how they can even be meeting the minimum salary cap at present with the current shambolic list of players.  They'll soon be able to front load a few for long term contracts but god knows who that would be.

True it is harder for Vic players but when a player is out of contract and they want to move, these days a club has no leverage and in the last 5 years players get to the club they want to go to.

Something distasteful that in round three we have journos crapping on about possible trades for next season. Its almost that the game isn't attractive enough and they need to go peak titillation!

My understanding from informed Saints fans is that they want Ben King so that they can play Max as a key backman. They believe thats where he would be best suited and would star there. Max to play FF.

If we still had Yze coaching us, we would have a quirky bonus to offer, as the King twins are the only other players to come from Albania, other than Adem.

Well, I'll be darned, the old Albanian 'Kings under the mountain' legend was true!

Old school journalists used to report the news, I swear nowadays they make the news

Be that as it may, its been reported that we've got strong interest in Ben King, and so any media related to him is going to be posted in a Trade Rumours thread, where the same conversations are being had so early in the season anyway.

That’s what happens when you turn them into media personalities on tv/radio, they have to create controversial content, to remain relevant and retain/validate their position.

Fo we see or hear any footy program these days, without their own “ news breaker “.

Welcome to modern sport. NRL players sign and announce contracts with other teams a year ahead. Players in American sports play for one team one day, then get traded and play for another team the next day. Same for soccer.

I don't like it either, but we're within touching distance of weaker teams trading out star players to finals contenders for draft picks mid-season.

That report by Browne is wrong.  King is out of contract next year but not a Restricted Free Agent until 2026.

Before 2016 it needs to be a trade.

I read the other day that Coll have plenty of sal cap space 😲 Ess probably also has.  Saints will have if they can move on a few of their highly paid recruits.

We are the only ones that has the trade currency this year.

I think today's journos also get leaked info from interested parties (agents, clubs, et al)

RE: King, i dont think either of them have really had performances to warrant such money. They both seem to be injury prone and tend to go out for long periods of time. I wouldn't waste our picks on them tbh as it would be a bit of a gamble.. yes there is absolutely plenty of upside, but id focus on keeping Kozzy and the two KPF we already have.

They do, but they put mayo on nothing stories to try and make them something they aren’t

Where is GNF and his riddles…..?

When the northern throne is vacant, there will be a flying bird to the south west of the lakes, and anchored at the bottom, will be a Peter Bell. 👌

There will a second coronation in hell Melbourne. King George will fly from the glittery north, but his second spirit will come from the middle west into Good winds clutches.

TBH if it’s correct that we are after him and that he is going to get a fortune, I would keep well away.

We have JVR and Jefferson and possibly Petty if needed and when Max is back, a ruck going forward. Also we have good draft picks and I would rather another good kid to complement the two we have.

Agree totally with this

JVR and Jefferson haven’t played a game yet - keep your irons in fires…

Is it the money that's the issue for you Red? If he proves himself post knee injury then i say bring him in. A proven KPF is worth more than picks and developing youngsters I think even with JT working his magic. And a proven KPF costs. Thats just the reality. My only concern is his fitness.

All that said, I'm really looking forward to seeing JVR make his debut. Would be great if he could nail down his spot.

Nah it's a legitimate facet of the game that deserves our full attention right now. The recruiting staff really earn their wages at MFC. Go get em team! More to come.

That’s a big part of it. Bringing in players on huge salaries, can stuff your club both in list capabilities and putting off team mates. They have said and it is probably true, that he will get a fortune if he leaves. I don’t want to pay a fortune, when we have developing players who will need more and there are good key forwards to draft. With our good picks, we could get one or two of them. I also don’t like the “all the eggs in one basket” situation either. If he does a knee again, it could be all over and we are stuck with a long, huge contract.

Pennant St Dee has already mentioned a top young key forward in the next draft and I would rather use a high pick to draft and develop one. Alternatively we can trade for another depth forward like Schache, at low cost for a few years, if needed.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
