I think Richo isn’t letting the truth get in the way of a good yarn here:

“So, what was that? Is it fitness? Is it mindset? Is it opposition? Or all of the above? Although [it was] not fitness. We are still running really hard. There were a few competition-wide markers that were strong proof that we were still a hard-running team. It was a bit more about attitude and opposition. Teams were taking things away from us.”

in 2021 we would steamroll teams in the second half, 2022 we were running up hill in the second half, sounds like we were a bit banged up also. You could see it live and on T.V., we had no run or dare.

were we fit? Probably yes, were we premiership fit? Clearly not.

Probably a mix of all things...also adding the injury component to fitness which is one you never mention unless your name is Chris Scott.

I'm sure they know exactly what went wrong and are working to fix it but I guess we will truly know that answer by the end of the season, not before it starts.

There's a lot of forward line saviour syndrome around JVR.  I can't see him doing much this year because he hasn't exactly set the world on fire at Casey.

Look @Orion. If you're going to get on 'Land in February and bring facts into the the discussion, you can hand back your membership now.

The reality is that neither Brown nor TMac are a strong chance to play all 23 H&A games. It's just not going to happen.

Brown's knee will require resting and management, and if you listen to the podcast with TMac you'll hear him say that his foot is basically in pain every day and he is managing it.

Just because JVR doesn't play round 1, doesn't mean he won't get plenty of game time this season.

If we haven't learnt to REST our most important players after last season, then we've learnt nothing at all.

Great to finish top 2, bad to finish top 2 with 80% of your list struggling to play out a game.

QD isn’t angry. It’s just his warped sense of humour - same as most on here. 😉

The statement is praising you for using facts and not making stuff up, like many others. So being out of the normal he indicates with humour that you don't belong.

It is humour, but I can see how you may misinterpret the intention. No-one likes being ostracised, even within a joke.

Trust me, he’s not angry. I know him well and he’s certainly not one who deserves to be on ignore, by anyone. He was actually complimenting you.

Sometimes things can be misinterpreted through text so maybe that's what's happened here.  If that is the case I apologise and will un-ignore QB.

Sorry for the misunderstanding @Orion. I thought your observation about JVR was spot on. Love your work. Long may astute observations such as yours reign on 'Land. We need people like you as a counter-weight to people like me (and certain others - you know who you are 😍).

Over the weekend I watched our last two games against Brisbane last year.  Aside from Petracca’s “broken leg” there were no obviously banged up players in my view. And Trac actually played well. The difference between the drubbing we handed them and the disappointment of the final seemed to be lack of dare. When we were desperate in the last few minutes we kicked two quick goals. Of course Lever’s brain fade and Kosi’s ill-discipline (two down the field frees for late tackles and a 50m penalty) didn’t help us. But it seemed to me that in the final we were going through the motions, thinking the game was ours any time we wanted it. Then all of a sudden, reality dawned on us, but too late. That’s mind-set, not fitness or injuries. Bath water, anyone?

It felt a little like that for most of the second half of the season.

Richo’s poured cold water over a JVR round 1 debut multiple times over summer so it’s highly likely he’ll start the season at Casey.

They can’t and won’t play all of BBB, T Mac, Gawn, Grundy and JVR - at the risk of conceding a record amount of defensive rebounds from the opposition’s defence.

Doesn't necessarily mean that JVR will not debut - could Richo be indulging in deceptive gamesmanship??

Good post, and I can't get my head around the fact that we go from tonking the Lions on their turf by 10 goals, only to cough up a shocker against the same team (albeit slightly depleted) 2 games later at the home of footy.

I'm glad someone here hasn't gone for the "banged up excuse" as to why we lost both our finals, although I do concede Gawn could barely get out of a jog in the Brisbane final.

Ironically Trac was in our top 3 players on the night even though he had a publicised injury.

I found our discipline to be chalk and cheese if you compare the 2021 with 2022 finals. It actually started in the very first pre season game V's Carlton where we gave up a ton of 50 mtr penalties when we didn't get the hint that the umps were cracking down on discipline and reared it's head in the Brisbane final as you pointed out above.

Lastly in response to your post, Kozzie had a really poor finals series IMO. 4 possesions in the Sydney final and then the free kicks and penalties he gave away in the Brisbane final.

Thanks Stu, did scroll to number and I like it, only thing is they’re a tad inaccurate…we didn’t win the first 13 games of 2022.

There was a few pretty basic mistakes in the list. I’m hoping that those mistakes don’t mean their predictions are similarly error riddled 😅

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
