Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

The only thing  about Hawthorn i agreed with was their indifference towards AFLW.  Can we have a rest for 6 months during the footy season ? The motorcade last Saturday was overkill  and no-one noticed it anyway. Most fans arent interested in AFLW.

Theyre not even playing but it wont go away all year i bet.

Sick of it.

Wow, a grown man without the self will to ignore something he’s not interested in. That’s really quite sad.

Just wondering if the AFLW players go and play in the VFLW or other state leagues in the AFLW off season.  I assumed they would, but I looked through the Casey VFLW squad expecting to see some familiar names and didn’t recognise any.  Looked at a few other squads and still no familiar names.  Anyone know what goes on there?

From seasons gone by, we tend to add in some younger/less experienced AFLW players in the middle of the VFLW season and cycle them through. Not sure of the caps on that - probably stricter with all teams now in the AFLW and no need for a 'practice run' for teams like Essendon and Hawthorn like last season. With AFLW pre-season now overlapping, like last year, I imagine it will mostly be the VFLW list to compete in any finals.

I should start a VFLW thread...

Aw, diddums.  Can you point to the dolly where the concept of AFLW hurt you?

So why did you specifically go to the AFLW forum on Demonland just to make this comment?

To get a reaction...

There are enough of us true believers on board who love this team.

I just let these sorts of comments go and feel sorry for the people who can't share the joy.

...and I'm one who was pretty ambivalent about it at the start.

Yeh, I can't let them slide.  I'm sick of misogynists making comments like this, and they deserve to be called out.

"Mackin is the older sister of premiership player Blaithin, with the two set to become the first representative siblings in the Demons’ AFLW program.

Mackin, who also plays for Armagh in Ladies Gaelic Football (LGFA), will make the trip down under at the conclusion of the county’s 2023 Championship campaign.

Mackin is regarded as one of the star players of the Gaelic competition, most notably recognised as the 2020 Senior Players’ Player of the Year – the equivalent of the league’s Best and Fairest or Brownlow Medal.

She has three All-Star selections to her name, reflective of the AFLW’s All-Australian honours, as well as international experience in soccer as a junior."

Love this! If she takes to the game anything like Blaithin did, we're in for something special.

Also, we're presumably getting her as a rookie, so great for list management.

That brings our list to 30, so we won't be participating in the Supplementary Draft on Tuesday.

Dees_In_October - what is the significance of the rookie list for the AFLW, both for clubs and players? I assume you are still limited to a list of 30, and the payment tiers are still in effect?

Have we heard if Eliza West has come on to the senior list for next season?

Yep, rookies are included in the list of 30. To be eligible as a rookie, a player must not have played Australian rules football  in the last 3 years or been involved in a talent pathway. So with the small list size, if you can get 2 rookies who are playing regularly in your team and performing well (i.e., last season we had B.Mackin and West), at this stage of the competition and in a strong team, it's a real bonus - one that we've made excellent use of pretty much every season to get some real talent rather than just development types. I'd also imagine that new rookies at least would be on the lowest payment tier, so that helps us out too. Presumably both Mackins will be the rookies for 2023, so yes, I think West will be elevated.

Thanks @Dees_In_October Aimee certainly has an impressive CV.

Watching her Gaelic football highlights you can see she has a turn of speed, shows good strength, possesses the Mackin Family candy store and is a natural left footer !

Meggs is excited.

Great to have another Irish lass and another Mac!

Only down side is the quality players missing from Gaelic football.  However it is purely amateur (mens and womens) so I don't blame the girls for coming out here!

The sisters will be coming over once they've played their championship match on April 15.  Sinead hasn't left Australia from last season, she's currently playing for Casey Demons.

This is the news I was waiting for!!! Blaithin and I were getting in Aimee's ear to play for Melbourne during the Best and Fairest, so I feel confident to say I played a role in getting her.  Cheeky mode off :)

Do your think clubs in Ireland will start taking measures to prevent this? They've been very accommodating with AFLW so far, but I saw somewhere that there are 11 new Irish signings for 2023, in addition to the players already on lists, so I'm wondering if there'll be a response. Although maybe there's already an unspoken agreement at some clubs (i.e., if you go to play AFLW, you won't have a spot when you come back)? Which would be understandable! Obviously if someone wants to go, you can't stop them, but it feels like they've made it easy so far.

Nothing they can do about it. Players aren't contracted.

The women's seasons don't overlap so they can head home to play inter county after the AFLW season is finished.

Every so often a promising young male player heads down here which causes some resentment but it's rare. Very few people begrudge these players the opportunity to play professionally. And most end up returning home anyways and have the professional training which is a big advantage. Tadgh Keneally was noticeably fitter and stronger when he went back to win the All-Ireland with Kerry. Likewise, Coor McKenna. He was a big reason Tyrone won the Ireland in '21. So there are also benefits for GAA teams when the Ozzies return.

Late last year It was mooted to be starting at about the time of our AFL bye weekend. But one of our W devotees (Kat, I’m talking about Mitch) thinks it will begin in August. He explained why he thinks this will be the case but I can’t remember coz getting old. 😁

Goldie had the team sign her flag then sent it to her parents in Ireland. At this point my parents didn’t roll in their graves, rather they did an Irish jig. 😁🇮🇪

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
