Thanks guys.ย  Had a great holiday!

My predictions for what it's worth...

Luke Dunstanย -

Will be delisted. No chance he stays on the list if he couldn't get a game all year based on his Casey form.

ย

Michael Hibberdย -

Unsure. Can see him retiring if he plays in a Premiership this year. Whether he gets a 1-year extension (if he wants it) all depends on his September form. I suspect he will probably get an offer if he wants one.

ย

James Jordonย -

Will actively seek a trade, with the club's blessing.ย

ย

Jake Melkshamย -

Will almost certainly be offered a 1-year extension, which I suspect he'll accept, even if he's offered two years elsewhere (as it would be a dud club not in contention).

ย

Andy Moniz-Wakefieldย -

Seemed to show positive signs at Casey. I'd be surprised he we didn't retain him.

ย

Josh Schacheย -

Ordinarily, I would have said he'd be delisted, but we won't have anyone else as emergency back-up if Grundy leaves and Brown and McDonald retire - even if they don't retire, I can't see them offering much in 2024 onwards. I think the club will explore who else is out there to fill this void, if they can get someone they have more confidence in, he's gone; if not, he gets a 1-year extension.

ย

Deakyn Smithย -

Given he's been around for 3 years without making his debut, and without setting the world on fire at Casey, I cannot see how he survives. I stand corrected if there's a reason for this.

ย

Kye Turnerย -

Probably delisted, maybe rookie listed? Not really his fault, as he can't get on the park, but we need list spots.ย

Is there any significance of the players highlighted in 2024?

No...l was fiddling with who might be off our list at the latest next year.ย  Forgot to remove the shading before posting.ย  I'll put it down to jet lag๐Ÿ˜‰

I notice on that list of OOC players,ย ,K.Farris-White is not listed..? anyone know when he is contracted until?

As a B rookie he should be.ย  Not sure where 'The Age' sourced its info or how accurate it is.

Even tho' I changed Schache to be OOC this year I'm not sure that is correct as there was info during the year that it was 2024.ย  2024 makes more sense as it is unlikely he would have come across for just one year but we will see soon.

Edited by Lucifers Hero

Melksham is playing so well but as a list management and development question he may still be denied a new contract due to the FD wanting to provide more opportunities.

Some of you think these things through in such an unfeeling manner; if Grundy and Tomlinson have suitors - we are going to get them to their homes - they are not โ€˜required playersโ€™ to the MC or the FD.

My guess is TMac goes around again and maybe Brown is done but canโ€™t be sure. We gave TMac another year to smooth out his contract so I doubt we will then pay it out too.

Dunstan, Hibberd, and JJ gone IMV. Schache stays as a cheap body if we see slim pickings for similar type.

Harmes, Tomlinson, Grundy and Spargo to be traded only if the capital they bring back can be used to acquire replacements or further talent. I think all 4 would get something back.

I would use this draft hand we have to reshape us a bit and bring in some talent similar to 2019 with Rivers, Pickett, and Jackson. But they will need opportunity.

at a rough guess...

dunstan - delisted
jordon - will sign as a free agent elsewhere (peptides need mids)
hibberd - retirement
melksham - 1 year extension
schache - honestly thought he was contracted for two years
d smith - delisted
k turner - delisted, re-rookied

and i expect ben brown might be forced into retirement, while you would think grundy, harmes, and tomlinson may seek trades to pastures anew, even though the latter two had little interest last year when they were clearly on the market as well

agreed except would be pointless to give melk 1 so i'd give him 2 and would let kturner go, melky delisted and rerookied due to squeeze on spots

Hi LH MFC just confirmed that Josh Schache has signed on for 2024, so that sorts the Schache conundrum out. Lol.!!!

Thanks again LH for your work on this

I'm interested in the age profiles. We seem to be short of good players in the 23 to 26 age range ie Viney Hunter etc replacements long term

Good observation as we do have a skewed age profile.ย  That and our long term contracts, there is a risk that in 4/5 years we are the Geelong equivalent of 'Dad's Army' in recent years.

But I am confident that JT, TL et al will keep refreshing out list as and when needed to ensure the age profile doesn't impact our performance

We had 9 players under 24 playing last weekend, and ask holding their spot pretty well (Laurie is really the only one of the 9 who is still finding his spot).

And then you can add Petty and potentially Spargo to our under 24 squad.ย

So we've got a nucleus of a future squad, but do need to add a whole group more.

I can see the benefit of loading on up a super star at pick 1 to help carry that next group through, knowing that we'll be able to fill a few more holes in the 25-28 year old bracket with free agency as our older superstars contracts end.

ย

I've also prepared the chart to track list and draft pick changes.ย  Regarding draft picks:

  • I have assumed Grundy and JJ are gone.ย  Other incoming picks could be if Harmes, Tomlison etc choose to go.
  • We need to take only 3 draftees:
    • Promote Turner using ND89.ย
    • Draft Brown with a later pick.ย  I doubt he will go as high as ND34 so my guess is we will use a pick from a player trade or more likely the JJ AFL comp possibly a 3rd round.
    • One (or maybe two) elite players in the top 5 or top 10 by trading up whatever draft picks we need to to get the player(s)we want.

We have a draft hand which is as good as any of our golden draft years (2013 to 2015 and 2019).ย  A huge opportunity that will set us up for the rest of this decade.

What will be the key contracts to extend next year?

Bowey, Lever, Langdon and Sparrow. Must keep all of them I think.

Is there a chance Ben Brown retires this year? And what would that mean for our list and cap space?

Thanks LH that is a great effort not easy keeping up with all the machinations of the MFC, just curious re: AMW is he signed Cat B until 2024 as I think he is definitely a keeper.!!

Also very excited about our 2023 draft hand.!!

AMW isn't yet contracted for 2024...error on my part.ย  Will fix on next version.

Love that Rivers and Kozzie are signed all the way till the end of 2027, where they will have each reached be the ripe old age ofย 26ย years old!ย

Edited by FarNorthernD

You'd assume that Hunter and Langdon are sure things for an extension due to age and FA status.

So really it's just Bowey and Sparrow that I'm sweating on for next year.

And Petty and JVR for 2025.

Sure it'd be nice to keep Jordan and Laurie, but at this point neither are critical.

Pretty amazing really.

The downside is they will both be FA's when their contracts expire.ย  Lets hope they will still want to stay!!ย  If they want ot go the club is unlikely to play games and force trades etc...

We need to lock JVR and Petty, they'll become cornerstones of the next generation.

If we get Reid, however unlikely, Sparrow becomes less important.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Western Bulldogs

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Hawthorn and Melbourne. Two teams with impressive form from last week but with seasons that are travelling on different trajectories meet in Saturdayโ€™s twilight game for what could well be the most intriguing contest of the AFLโ€™s penultimate round. Sadly, the game has been relegated to that unappealing time slot in the weekend when Melburnians are typically preoccupied with activities other than football. It falls between the morning's shopping, afternoon sport and recreation, and Saturday night fever. A time usually reserved for relatively insignificant events but this one is not a nothingburger for either of the clubs or their fans.

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterdayโ€™s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown andย  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
