Absolute balls, was really hoping Howes could crack a debut this year.

Probably too late now anyway.
Doubt we will see anymore debuts this year.

Oliver 2-3. At the rate he’s progressing it’ll be 1-2 weeks in 9 months 🙄

2 years with no senior footy for Howes, bit of a shame, looks a classy player and a bit of a point of difference

No mention of Jake Bowey who copped a knock in the game vs Adelaide which makes him favourite for the mystery injury for this week.

How much better does LJ look in our jumped than Freo's? You made a mistake, LJ.

I feel really sorry for Blake Howes - looked close to a debut last year, then injured, and again this year.  What is his contract status?

Surprised that the injury was said to be an existing one from some time ago because he appeared to injure the wrist late in the game vs Sandringham in the week before the bye.

Wrist / Hand, there's a lot of small bones in the junction between them, I suspect it's something in there.

It's actually more complicated than it seems.

The injury is a fracture of the scaphoid bone. The scaphoid is one of eight small bones called 'carpal bones' in the hand. There is actually variation in how the anatomical "wrist" is defined; the wrist could be considered part of the hand (i.e. the carpal bones) or the junction of the hand (including the carpal bones) and the bones of the forearm (radius and ulna).  So, in Howes' case, both hand and wrist are correct.

As an aside, the scaphoid bone is somewhat of a design flaw, as the scaphoid receives it's blood supply from distal (further away) to proximal (closer). This creates issues with healing leading to complications such as non-union and avascular necrosis. I suspect Howes has unfortunately developed such complications given the club doctor's comments that the fracture "had probably been there for some time". Scaphoid fractures can be difficult to identify initially on routine imaging and thus a delayed diagnosis of a scaphoid fracture (when complications are present) is not uncommon.

The issue for the club's comms is that, in translating from precise medical language to language the average punter understands, accuracy can be lost and ambiguity introduced. Without an understanding of the specific diagnosis, we should be cautious about making inferences from generic descriptions (e.g. "hamstring" 😬).

Such a weird coincidence.

Was just about to post almost exactly the same explanation.

Glad we have the pre finals bye. Fritsch should be able to get some sort of hit out in before finals in 7 weeks

It's a huge worry though. Missing two-three months of footy and resuming in a major final...

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
