There's no reason why the bulk of this group can't be up at the pointy end of things for 5 years or so and we need to draft, list manage and develop players accordingly.

It's just a delay to pre-season, Brown will be fine and now with support (T-Mac and JVR) he will have more space to play his leading game.

The back end of this year isn't fair to mark Brown on, he clearly needed a rest and tall support in the fwd line but we refused to play Weid.  he has the work load of 2 fwds generally playing on at least 2 def

To my mind, if we are relying on BBB as a key forward in 2023, we will be in trouble. His weaknesses were really shown up this year -particularly his awkwardness as soon as the ball hits the ground. I am not blaming him; he was instrumental in 2021 and he owes us nothing. But the way forward is TMac, JVR, Schache maybe, a dynamite midfield led by Gawn and Grundy, and of course Fritta.

As long as the structure doesn't have JVR as the 1st forward, that is important.  So we need one of the other big forwards to be there to take defender no 1.

Absolutely the biggest SHIFT necessary for 2023. Do it snd we are with all else back as a real Flag favourite even with Cats starting about 5 goals in front in Round1.

Not a disaster at all if BBB misses the pre xmas training period, given it's only 3 or so weeks these days.

Hoping for a better season from him next year.

May was originally recruited as a forward (to Gold Coast) while Petty - despite a popular narrative on here - was a back man as a junior. May would potentially make the better swingman, if needed.

Actually think BBB is alot better once the ball hits the ground than many give him credit for.  Yes he looks awkward, but in my view he has brilliant footy sense that means even when he misses the mark, he knows where to go to put himself in dangerous positions to stay in the contest and be useful option in chains that end up in goals, whether he's the one kicking them or some deft tap ons to others.  Don't think he would have been the leading goal kicker in the league over a period of 3 years if he was a one trick pony and couldn't do stuff off the ground.  I also think he's an absolute asset and great teacher for guys like JVR in this respect.

Speaking of Fritta (and not for the first time today, OF 😉) he had knee surgery immediately at season’s end for an injury sustained during training when he was tackled by (iirc) Greg Stafford, of all the hulking big bodies you don’t want landing on you. 😁

He’s fully recovered and returns home from O/S tomorrow night. He’ll be starting pre-season with everyone else in the first week of December or whenever it is.

He is not going to be a 'saviour' but he could well be a significant addition to what is shaping as a potent forward arc. Sustainable fitness and confidence are the two key factors for Joel to address. I'd like to see a readiness of Joel to attack teams and opportunities should BB be injured or wanting due to injuries.

We also need a couple of great planning moves to develop an alternative set of game plans - broadly applied across all players and recruits. We've got the timber, we are losing the 'spark'.

I wonder just how good Fritta might be ... if May was up forward, as well.

I meant the same thing. The club, the S & C, the FD, Goody, whoever.. the point still remains that BBB was not managed in the sense of load management, he was just never in MFC shape to begin with and had to go away to get right.

JS is lucky to be still on the list in my view 

Hope he stays injury free so we can all see what some on here have been banging on about. Its time.

How can you say that? Petty at his age has a wonderful career in store. We should use him best for our team and forward he has a great future.

Our great full back could play firward but we are talking a cameo only.

We would be so much better with Petty JVR Tmac BBB Fritta Kossie some other small crumbers and resting rucks at times making our forward line varied and strong.

It's a team game and we have some options let's use them.

I suspect this isn't a fix but part of the ongoing maintenance regime

My sense is that if we are still reliant on him being our main tall target inside F50 in 2023 we have not improved - I remain hopeful that one of the following can happen

- JVR has a massive summer and performs at the highest level consistently 

- H Petty is used as a tall forward

- Either Grundy or Gawn (or both) can have a meaningful impact in the F50 

- J Smith trains as a forward over summer, stays fit and surprises everyone with 40+ goals (yes, I know this one is a bit out there 😀)

 

Strange story this - given TMac looked like he was pretty well right already just before Xmas.

No harm in Tmac doing extras with a trainer and getting full confidence in his movement. Was a shock to hear that the screws snapped in that incident in the final (vfl) without any damage to the bones. Whilst I love our full list, the selection squeeze is going to be brutal in 2023. Hoping everyone embraces it and we crush teams at both levels all year long
