AFLW: QF vs Adelaide

Our forward line has been much more potent this season than season 6.  It was Adelaide's defence that beat us twice last season, including the grand final.  We had 9 goal kickers last week, so our forward depth is our strength, particularly with Hore playing her best footy at the moment, and Harris continuing to be Harris.  Banners is just growing stronger each week, for her youth she's scary to oppositions.  If we're able to counter their backline we're okay.  I also think the key to their attack is Ash Woodleigh (hurts me to say that, given she used to be a Demon).  With Gillard, Birch, Heath playing at their peak, and the inclusion last week of Gay, we need to minimise her impact.  Our midfield is incredibly strong - Paxman, Purcell, Mithen, Hanks, L Pearce are dominant forces.  Plus I'm loving the impact Mackin has made on the team, she's a beast. Zanker and Lampard for some annoying reason tend to go unnoticed by media commentators, I reckon Zanker was one of the best on ground last week.  But hey, if their understatement means the opposition don't consider their impact, that's their loss, because they both have the ability to impact the game.

I think we're okay :)

Generally agree but if they lock the ball in their F50 and pressure the ball carrier as they did in the GF, we won't get much opportunity to make the most of our strengths and ball movement.

I'm not particularly impressed that this game starts at 7.10 on a Friday night, whereas the men's games start at 7.50. If 7.10 gives everyone enough time to travel in to the inner city, why are AFL games so late?

Nevertheless, looking forward to a strong performance and a solid win. Go Dees!

How many times have we heard people complain 7.50 is a late starting time?

True, but our side has improved immensely since then, particularly with Gillard's constant growth as a key defender, and the addition of Purcell in the midfield.  I also think a key person who did that work in the GF was Erin Phillips.  Adelaide are still a very good side, but they're not the same side as last season.  They've lost quite significantly to both teams above them on the ladder.  That's telling

Didn’t always have the shirt tucked in?

That’s the first thing I noticed!

And as bad as it looks, if ever she was to run out with her jumper not tucked in, I’d run onto the field and tuck the bloody thing in for her myself! 😆JK. Except not JK

Of course she is.

I’m surprised Randall’s been rushed back in. Especially since they’ve got the double chance. This could prove to be a foolish choice (🤞🏼🤭).

This is true, Kat. The sweetest girl off the field. And that’s where the sweetest is left… off the field. 😈

Our performance in Round 1 in Adelaide his year was one of the best performances from our womens team ever. Top 5 for sure. We matched Adeliade on the inside and were much better going inside 50. We beat them resoundingly.

We will win this game because we are the better team and because of that fantastic Round 1 win, know we can beat the Crows

The girls will perform. No doubt in my mind. They remind me of how the men were tracking coming into finals in 2021. They have belief

I actually think they've become a better side since then, too.  Their performance since the Bulldogs game has been flawless.  Whereas Adelaide have not been their strongest coming into the finals, although that can be attributed to the absence of Chelsea Randall.

I’m fine with any start time. What I’m not impressed with is that gates don’t open until 6pm. Doesn’t give us much time at all to set up. With the men’s comp gates open two hours before start.

So true.  It's a struggle for cheer squads to get organised with such a short turnaround.  We have to have the banner squad ready a good 40 minutes before ball up.

The addition of Mackin and Goldy to the round one side makes us stronger.

Also the experimentation with Heath during the season gives us a lot more versatility.

...and almost forgot giving Harris a run in the ruck has been a great move.

Absolutely pumped.

Feeling a lot like I did last year with the men's - a few butterflies, but mainly excitement and confidence that we're going to bring our A game and do the business.

As Goody told the players before the PF last year: "Just be us. Just be the way we've been all year ... and the game will be ours."

I feel even more confident with every passing week. We’re formidable. We go in hard, absolutely fearless. I just can’t see us losing.

We are playing at a different level than 2021. Every player ( like our 2021 Men's flag team all are involved ) Defence improved markedly since opening round and final mids and attack look perpetually ready to score quickly in a rush of goals. Handball game is at its best and a game changer vs any other team. Only snag  can be our rushed attempt at goal scoring and usually it rights itself by games end.

There’s 130 Melb-based Crows cheer squad members. How many are here tonight? A grand total of one. True story. The lady who runs the squad is here on her own. And their club wouldn’t send a banner over. She’s currently trying to find crows supporters to form the guard of honour. If she can’t find enough ppl a couple of us are gonna join them. Apparently during the men’s all 130 of them “scramble over each other to get involved.” Pretty sad.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
