Should a guy who missed 4 weeks from committing a sickening bump be eligible for any awards?
I know he’s excluded from the brownlow but I don’t think he should be lauded this year.

Gosh.  So many posters complaining so much about something that ultimately means so little.

I’ll remind you of that the next time you pull me up for using the wrong ‘there’.

Other than Hawkins being named captain, it's actually a really decent side.  I'd have swapped Hawkins for Lynch but otherwise it's hard to see who didn't deserve to be in there.  Congratulations to Gawn who is clearly the best ruckman since Dean Cox. 6 AA's puts him in rare air.  Oliver will be there soon enough, and well done to Petracca and May on their achievements.

Hawkins, Saad and Stengle for starters.

Good team.

Who’s Captain?

Not Geelong's.

Still cant work out how Saad made it over Brayshaw

It’s so Geelong cAn have more players in the team.

Watching a bit delayed here to many of you and literally Tom Hawkins quote when being interviewed since being awarded AA captain "I don't think I've ever been a captain before" (does he mean like not even for a single game at some point?) - wow.

All the gushing of the Fox/360 commentary team over him being captain.  I think I'm going to vomit.

I don't have such a problem with the Tomohawk being picked as a forward - he's a beast and freak of nature to still be performing so well down there in that role at his age.

And how does Andrew Brayshaw get the AFLPA MVP award and only a position on the bench of the AA team?

I would have swapped him with Cripps.

Felt like Brayshaw stiff not to at least make the bench, not sure rozee had that good of a year. One again no wings, with the way the transition game is played these days they are one of the most important roles in any serious team, no coincidence that all the best sides have at least one good winger.

Remember the dark days when Melbourne supporters begrudgingly accepted none of our players making AA team and celebrated when Mark Jamar finally got a jacket?

Times have certainly changed!

It could be said that Gus has played multiple positions over the season and perhaps that could have cost him.

...not that it made any sort of difference to the Hawkins selection.

Agree though.  Gus is very stiff.

Really glad for May to be finally getting the recognition.  Could have been 3AAs for him as he was pretty bloody good in 2021 as well from memory.

Yes, now we have jumped so far over the shark that we are angry about who leads this NON-EXISTENT TEAM

We're here to win back to back premierships.  The rest is just a sideshow.

Then don't read it. You saw the topic title. Hawkins named captain is a joke and embarrassing to the AFL and needs to be called out.

The obvious injustice won't affect our flag chances or focus as supporters. Gawns snub as best AFL captain may even further unite the team.

Clarrie won the only non AFL judged award. There lies the truth.

Agree about the ultimate goal though. Back to back is what counts.

Crap like this makes it sweeter.

May was AA in 2021.

Or Lachie Neale?

Possibly, Brayshaw should have been in though for sure.

Could someone explain why (edited name ) Robbo is using this occasion to raise the Zorko/ Petty incident?

FMD!!! He is the chief football writer for a major paper.

The standard of "journalism" in this country is a joke.

Yes they were trying to stir up Goody, but he's too smart for a couple of hacks." I suppose we should ask how Mr Petty is" WTF, and then your loungeroom looks better. SIMON..F' off..

I'm actually surprised he made it. Had a good year but not as good as last year. Was injured in the first quarter against the Dockers, missed the next two games and then took a few games to get back in the groove after his dust-up.

He is an absolute gun and funnily enough is still underrated by most of the football world, except those who really matter, the coaches.

Also a great player to tie with. Touk Miller is a star. Love to watch him play. Will probably win the Brownlow.

I used to live next door to Clarko. I had an argument with him about who was better out of Oliver and Cripps.

1 to Wrecker 0 for Clarko.

When we payed Carlton I noticed Cripps tagging Oliver a few times at centre bounces. Oliver would get away from him and Cripps was following him.

You won't see Clarry tagging anyone. Cam.you.imagime if he got a free run.at the ball.

Some effort Maxy Gawn. Head and shoulders best ruck in the land. And captain. He’ll add more jackets too. Will he make it to 10 I wonder?

Hawkins deserves his spot in the team. He’s been a great forward and to still be doing it as his age is phenomenal. Naming him captain is just weird though.

Despite a spirited third quarter surge, the Demons have slumped to their worst start to a season since 2012, remaining winless and second last on the ladder after a 39-point defeat to Essendon at Adelaide Oval in Gather Round.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.
