Jake’s kick?? Intent or a miskick.  Hmmm. Not sure.  Got a lucky bounce to keep the game alive.

Jayden Hunts run and kick was the key to get it to the square. That’s the gold !!!

Wouldn’t have happened without Jake’s deliberate kick to a 3 on 1 in the corridor…

It's not the quality of the kick under pressure that counts. It was the direction to the centre that allowed Hunt to gather the "lucky" bounce and kick long and straight to the goal square. Bang bang a goal!

Rick is a great player and leader. Injury has hampered him this year but no question he is a potential future captain

But I'm sorry. Showering him with praise because he executed a wobbly kick into the corridor when we need to score with seconds remaining is hardly next level out of the box thinking. It was exactly what he should have done. The only reason we are commenting on it is because we are usually so predictable this simple play seems so extraordinary. I don't think it was that special at all.

Aside from that kick where we got a good bounce i thought he was very average in defence

I just knew that was gonna bounce.

Hunt is playing like someone who knows he is in with a shot at playing in a GF.

Form has been excellent

Is jake Lever one of our most intelligent and calm-in-a-crisis footy players wev'e had for some time (I'm sure he's a smart boy but I'm talking footy I.Q.)?

Casting my mind back to Round 23 2021, Jake was the player that provided the perfect pass to Max, admittedly he and Max were on the same page, so credit to Max also. Gets the Dees the minor premiership.

Last Saturday, final 30 seconds Lever puts the last play inboard after setting up the directions.  Dees win thanks to heroics of Hunt, Brwon, Melk and Pickett.  But it starts with Jake. Again.

What can he do for the team this week I wonder?

I think this is what the club value re Lever, he understands what the moment requires and makes good decisions.

Hunt is another player who has on quite a few occassions when we've had to go has won a contest, broken free and hit up the right target in our forward 50. Last year I think he matured alot from decision making perspective and he has been very good since returning to the side.

For a moment i thought it was going to be:

Mr Magoo, you've done it again

Jake is well suited to his role directing the backline but I think future captain is more suited to Gus. Has the intelligence, footy smarts and interpersonal skills to be a great leader. Can see a Gus / Lever - captain / vice captain future. This is providing Viney is no longer around which may not be the case.

I had the voice of McGoo in my brain when posting this topic.  Good Call.

But I am dissappointed at some comments on Lever.  The issue for me was that he DID make this kick in a calculated manner. It wasn't luck, he bee-lined the ball, he had already done the set up instructions to others.

The analysis on Kayo was very, very similiar to that a year ago re: the kick to Max. No fluke, this bloke thinks about it. hence my memory was jogged.

I also acknowledged , in my words, 'the heroics of Jayden Hunt and the others that turned what Jake initiated into a sublime  football experience. Iv'e never seen the MCC  area go nuts like they did in this moment. (and that includes Flower's first final triumph in 1987.

Watch the vision  Lever was signalling the corridor and when he got the ball that's where he kicked it . Champions make their own luck.

But that moustache...geez I used to  thimk he was mocking Taylor Walker but he still hasn't got rid of it

How about a game where Hunt and Melksham were crucial to victory

Who are you guys going to bag now ?

Lots on here were calling for their delisting but they’ve been very good in the past few games.  They are not stars but perhaps you are measured sometimes by the contributions of your “17-22” selected type players.   Hunt brings run and pace (and a stylish headband) and Milkshake brings a bit of aggro and hunger for goals (and I hear if required a lethal right hook).

Hunty is showing an infectious degree of enthusiasm and seems to be really enjoying playing his rôle.

I believe that over the years players 17-25 or so have made the difference between good and great teams

It's pretty obvious that Sam Weideman is the whipping boy du jour, IRW

well according to my posting theory it may mean he kicks 5 in the G/ F

Egg on my face as well in that case.

But I always had time for Hunt and Melksham..no one's perfect

You should be sorry. That was a brilliantly orchestrated set play by Lever.

So it was meant to be a wobbly kick that got a lucky bounce?

And even if it is a set play. so what

Great player Rick. I'm delighted he plays with us but come on. He pointed in one direction and kicked it in a different direction. I'm all for doling out the praise when warranted but I think we've gone over the top here

And anyways, the reason we won that game is Jake Melksham. If anyone deserves his own thread its him.

Hunt could be in that side for other purposes as well.Something that he does very well now.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
