For a club that is small and irrelevant, supporters of the "big" clubs sure do love beating us.

You just sense it's a bit of classism and fear of the elite being better than them. Richmond and Collingwood supporters I know can't STAND Melbourne. Which is weird becauae they keep talking about how irrelevant we are.

That could be a bad omen. Carlton once tried to rebrand themselves as the Cockatoos in the 1930's!

I suspect there's a cockkk or 2 down at Royal Parade.

Yep I get that too, especially Collingwood and Richmond - they say we're irrelevant but boy do they love beating the "toffs".

Carlton I can understand this past weekend because that was their season on the line - they get one last chance against the Pies this week.

I'm probably more disturbed by the fact you knew about this. Do you always stalk the losers?

Because back in the 50s and early 60s when I was at school Carlton was nearly outer suburbs and Collingwood was sacrilegious.

(I was not a participant or advocate of this being too young)

Given Carlton's proximity to the city, I find it hard to believe that Carlton was considered an outer suburb.

It might have been a distance from the leafy south east, but would have been closer to the CBD and the G than much of the south east.

This is speaking purely as someone who has lived in the south east his entire life.

I once told him if he ever dated an Essendon supporter I wouldn’t speak to her. He said that’s a little harsh, isn’t it? I said on the contrary, that’s lenient, the bit*ch is lucky I don’t kill her. 😂

edit: @He de mon I’m joking, of course. I wouldn’t kill her.
I’d just maim her for life. 😏

Haha, love it!

This was definitely the general sentiment at the ground too.

Lots of noise until Melksham kicked his goal, then it was panic, then it was absolute crickets after Kozzy got the winner.

Love her passion and feel her pain. That was me when Tuohy kicked that goal after the siren.  Max delivered the antidote last year.

I will never forget that game. I was in China for work. We were meant to be back for the game but got stuck there thanks to a typhoon. I was in my hotel room watching this game on the world's worst Wifi and VPN. It kept cutting out, and I remember it froze as he was lining up for goal.

2 seconds later I get a text from my dad.... "I f*ing hate Geelong".

I cried.

Better than standing on the Gary Ablett terrace directly in line with the kick!

I don’t get to do it often, but when appropriate I remind the ‘irrelevant’ accusers that the original rules of Australian footy are the “Rules of The Melbourne Football Club”, which they can see displayed at the National Sports Museum. No MFC = no footy (a long bow, I know, but never fails to shut them up). We couldn’t be MORE relevant.

That was wild, and it was exactly the vibe in the Southern Stand. Anger, followed by utter silence, and then some punching happened.

It’s hard for us to understand it in the context of how good Melksham and Kozzie were, but that was also one of the almightiest chokes in AFL history. Playing for finals. 7 points up with 2 minutes to play.

I love that it happened to their horrible, whiny, entitled supporters. Their players are actually much more likeable than their supporters. They deserve to stay out in the cold for longer until they learn some manners.

The truth is that if not for the utter bungling incompetence of the Carlton Football Club on 5 occasions in the last 2 minutes then we lose that match.

  1. Melky outmarks 3 Carlton defenders, all taller than him.
  2. Newnes drops a simple uncontested mark when Viney over kicks it inside 50
  3. Owies miskicks a 15m uncontested backwards pass to "Woof" and it bounces short
  4. Saad's kick down the line to a Carlton 3 on 1 doesn't result in a Carlton mark
  5. Hunt's kick back down the line to a Carlton 3 on 1 doesn't result in a Carlton mark and in fact it hits Young in the head

Pickett goal!

I always run with "Melbourne invented football and built the MCG". The second claim is a longish bow but there's no space for reasonableness in footy arguments 😂

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
