I think we do have enough to get massive crowds, what I don’t understand is why our premium reserved areas never get full. According to the club those areas were sold out months ago, where are those members? It’s as if some jumped on board this year simply for the GF guarantee without actually intending on turning up to H&A matches. Our area got overrun by Pies supporters in the second half and no idea how they’re allowed in a Melbourne area. 

Their crowd noise was insane. It's like having a 23rd man really.

When we ran out at the start of the game all I heard was boo's from Collingwood supporters and barely any cheers from us.

They'll feed off their crowd noise come finals.

Also, I know Jack Viney isn't the best media performer going around but I genuinely found this comment bizarre. 

In front of over 70,000 spectators, it was a battle between second and third in Round 21, and it lived up to the hype.

“Tonight was a real finals-like atmosphere,” Viney said.

“I think the Demon Army gave the Collingwood supporters a real good run for their money tonight.

“Hopefully we finish with some big crowds to finish the season.”

I was in AFL Members and while they definitely outnumbered us we had a pretty decent contingency there. I'd say it was 65:35 in terms of ratio which really isn't bad. Collingwood has a lot of supporters. It's the reality.

i was afl members too i think yr split is about right

the filth has probably 5x more supporters than us, not to mention 40k odd more members

with the way they're playing at the moment, how they're not having 80k of their 110k membership base turn up every week i don't know

the rotten [censored] are very, very good

The 'we are Melbourne and this is our due' mentality.

The humility and honesty of our supporters of the years leading up to our premiership are gone. I have gotten a horrible air of inevitability this year which we never deserved. 

We CAN draw crowds. Those two finals in 2018 proved it. The crowd mix was 70/30 us against Geelong and probably 60/40 against Hawthorn. But then, we had our backs to the wall.

Not only were we outnumbered but had to put up with Pie supporting sitting in our Redlegs area. We applied for four additional Redlegs seats this year and we’re told that it was sold out? To make matters worse a lot of our regulars who sit near us did not show last night. It is very disappointing and having 45,000 booing our every touch of the ball gets really, really annoying and hearing them jeer every mistake and turnover and madly celebrating every little win they had made me even angrier, not to mention Cox’s dog act and umps turning a blind eye to some rough tactics that we would never get away with. To top it all off we dominated possession but could not buy a goal to save us. Grrrr….!!

Perhaps there should be a requirement to attend a certain number of games. Use it or lose it.

I was AFL members as well and it felt like it was me and about 10 other Melbourne supporters in a sea of scum and villainy. Which level were you guys sitting? Ground level felt like a sea of black and white

It is demoralising as a supporter seeing us so heavily outnumbered at our own home ground I can't imagine how the players feel.

Yep agreed - we were the underdog challenger in 2018, seemingly from nowhere. You wouldn't know we're reigning premiers at times this year.

In the MCC I'd say it was a 50-50 split but in terms of noise it almost felt 80-20 in favour of the FILTH. Maybe they're feeling how we felt back in 2018?

And on a somewhat related note, it felt like a big portion of the MCC were theatre goers, there to drink as much as possible (only limited by the bar queues) and hardly watch a quarter of footy. Rant over.

They have strength in numbers though, Richmond and Essendon are similar. They feed off each other and reinforce their own ignorance. And it ends up impacting the umpiring and the energy of their players.

I wish we had that.

The ferals sitting near us where more interested in rubbing every goal and decision that went their way into us Melbourne supporters than cheering on their team. Wasn't just an isolated group it was multiple. 

The reserved seat area was very empty compared to the rest of the ground. I think a lot of wealthy Melbourne people brought them for the finals. The club gets the money, but the team gets nothing.

I’m also very tempted to tell the club that we got them to over 60,000 members - so can they do the right thing by us and not sell home games to NT, and put their foot down about playing in Geelong. Start acting like the big boys.

we are outnumbered virtually every game we play as we have one of the smallest supporter bases and the highest conversion of supporter: member of the actual clubs, rather than the make-believe franchises

it's often quoted in the media - and by the club in our dark days as a 'good news story' - and it is based on that nielsen / roy morgan data that's guesstimated annunally to membership ratio

100% agree. As much as we are pretty good at bagging out on other teams supporters and their idiosyncrasies, they at the very least turn up to games and are loud and proud.  The same can’t be said for us.

Almost typically, I would expect a pick up in numbers once the finals begin. What were you doing during  the home and away season?

I am fortunate (and perhaps privileged) enough to have one of those memberships that give me a reserved seat / access to finals/ GF etc.  All year where I sit it has been less than half full. In my opinion, shameful. Not having a go at the elderly, Covid concerned and members and fans that have to travel great distances. The ones I am disappointed in is all of our fair weather supporters.  We have more than our fair share of them.

I can only hope that the new generation of young supporters that we hopefully attract by our team’s recent success are a new breed that actually walk the talk. I hope it is not more of the same.
