There is no getting outta jail when teams allow us to win the contested ball then pressure us around the contest, sweating on our mistakes, then run and spread .

    Every week we allow the opposition to walk the ball to the wing with no pressure and they get a free ride into their 50. Also our goal kicking ain't flash either. Miss too many easy ones for the amount of times we get into 50. When we tackle well and kick straight we win most times. Poor at defensive pressure and goal kicking you end up on the losing side.

    Melksham’s skill errors were fatal for us but he did a good job keeping Patty McCartin out of the game. McCartin had  4 marks and 6 intercept possessions.

    Key forwards aren’t good, that’s clear as day, but it’s the lack of uncontested kick/mark game and spread that’s our biggest weakness.

    You can’t just play down one wing at a time. When the time comes to switch and open up the ground you have to use it. Even more so when you lack key forwards. 

    We need the backline fitter and encouraged to run and use the ball. And we need the midfield fitter, faster and more skilled.

    Need to put speed on the ball in transition. Collingwood showed that you can get the defence off their mark if you attack quickly. Goody must be a stubborn bastard to see that our biggest asset in 2021 is a large liability in 2022.

    The game plan can't function as we're now a poor pressure team

    The lack of pressure we apply and/or fitness woes are an even greater issue than predictability

    we finished second on the ladder with the toughest fixture of any team. Hardly dismantled and exploited.

    Our players aren't in top form and we need to find our intensity again

    Christ, Defensive efforts??? KEEPING A DEFENDER QUIET?? PARK ME... he is there to kick goals, he didn't and was Abysmal!

    His job is to be a defensive forward similar to what TMac was used for. TMac ran opposition defenders under the ball in marking contests to let Brown get an unimpeded run and jump. Sydney’s interceptors had a pretty quiet day.

    Goals are a bonus.

    The idea that we need elite users is a complete furphy.

    If we bring the pressure around contest (in particular post clearance) and win ground balls, finesse is irrelevant.

    We haven't played take it on footy well for some time.

    The game has evolved into that frenetic game of, hit the player to open up the field in order to score especially after turnovers.

    Some players cannot do it, either there timing is out, the skills aren't good enough or they aren't in the right field position. They also don't baulk and shimmy so that they aren't easily read.

    It is something that needs development and to think we can turn it on we the require it is naive.

    We had to be trying different styles of play throughout the H & A, instead of a contested and safe game.

    You could see that we were told to take it on early yesterday and after a few failed attempts we went back into our kick to the contest down the line style.

    Trouble is Kozzie and Spargo are mainly defensive forwards, Kozzie should go no further that CHF, just look at Elliot from the pies given room to move around.

    The way I read it is;


    Our game plan has three parts;

    1. defensive structure that limits scoring (priority) and promotes rebound/turnover (2nd priority)

    2. Strength at stoppage (to drive forward)

    3. Contest and re-contest in the forward 50.

    we’re a bit (just a bit) off in 2 of 3;

    1. Opposition put most effort into this - keep May & Hibbo deep when possible and keep Lever accountable. Salem & Bowey off too.

     

    2. Feel this part of our game remains strong.

    3. TMac missing a decent problem - largely because he creates space/protection for BBB who either marks it or hits contests better to provide more quality ground ball for our smalls. Plus he is worth a few goals too.

    I said this on the demons facebook page but last year we controlled the tempo, dont you remember the first game? we came out and we controlled when the ball was moving fast and when it was moving slow, opposition fear you when you have that, "is this it?, do i go now? whos got him covered?" at the moment its go go go, into the pocket to only tall in our Forward BBB who has 3 blokes on him BAM, and the teams know this and rebound hard. Couldn't be clearer in the collingwood game in which they sacrificed their forward position because they could rebound so easy.

    Last night we never took our foot off the gas, yes sydney were going hard but you have to weather the storm with our own pressure, slow and then go, there is a rhythm to it game. Spargo was one of the few who actually tried to control the game, when we have the ball we own the time and positioning, Trac is one of the best at this, but when hurt he can't do what he we know he can.

    Would love to see the stats on 2nd half’s won this season… Against the top teams we seem to get run over every time.

      As the focus of the AFL moves exclusively to South Australia for Gather Round, the question is raised as to what are we going to get from the  Melbourne Football Club this weekend? Will it be a repeat of the slop fest of the last three weeks that have seen the team score a measly 174 points and concede 310 or will a return to the City of Churches and the scene where they performed at their best in 2024 act as a wakeup call and bring them out of their early season reverie?  Or will the sleepy Dees treat their fans to a reenactment of their lazy effort from the first Gather Round of two years ago when they allowed the Bombers to trample all over them on a soggy and wet Adelaide Oval? The two examples from above tell us how fickle form can be in football. Last year, a committed group of players turned up in Adelaide with a businesslike mindset. They had a plan, went in confidently and hard for the football and kicked winning scores against both home teams in a difficult environment for visitors. And they repeated that sort of effort later in the season when they played Essendon at the MCG.

      Gather Round is here, kicking off with a Thursday night blockbuster as Adelaide faces Geelong. The Crows will be out for redemption after a controversial loss last week. Saturday starts with the Magpies taking on the Swans. Collingwood will be eager to cement their spot in the top eight, while Sydney is hot on their heels. In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.

      Round 4 kicks off with a blockbuster on Thursday night as traditional rivals Collingwood and Carlton clash at the MCG, with the Magpies looking to assert themselves as early-season contenders and the Blues seeking their first win of the season. Saturday opens with Gold Coast hosting Adelaide, a key test for the Suns as they aim to back up their big win last week, while the Crows will be looking to keep their perfect record intact. Reigning wooden spooners Richmond have the daunting task of facing reigning premiers Brisbane at the ‘G and the Lions will be eager to reaffirm their premiership credentials after a patchy start. Saturday night sees North Melbourne take on Sydney at Marvel Stadium, with the Swans looking to build on their first win of the season last week against a rebuilding Roos outfit. Sunday’s action begins with GWS hosting West Coast at ENGIE Stadium, a game that could get ugly very early for the visitors.
