Trade and Free Agency rumours

The Dunkley trade:

  • Brisbane receives Josh Dunkley, a future third-round selection and a future fourth-round selection (tied to Melbourne)
  • Western Bulldogs receive a second-round pick (currently No.21), a future first-round selection, a future second-round selection and a future fourth-round selection (tied to Geelong)

Thought the F4 swap interesting.  One tied to Geelong, one tied to us.   It will probably be pick 60 something for pick 60 something and the advantage could go either way.

Hardly worth swapping.

Thanks. No, it wasn't just your post, I have seen it stated the same way in the media i.e. only the 2nd round pick being qualified as "tied to Freo".

Cheers

Freo only had the one future first. So no need to clarify.

They had a pair of 2nd rounders. They had  their own and they had North Melbourne’s special pick from the Logue trade.

So in the interest of some clarity they specify the second round pick is the one tied to Freo’s ladder position

Very good business overall

Hopefully the bed wetters can calm down now

Firstly, let me congratulate the Dees for another extraordinary trade period.

For those wanting to know who the KPF Melbourne is after.  Its Mitch Georgiades.  We have super currency next year.  2 firsts and 3 second round draft picks when Mitch is out of contract.  We will continue to go hard for him.  As I said before, the club thinks they can get him.  They think he and JVR are the two-pronged KPF for the future.  No doubt if Mitch is unattainable, they will look elsewhere for the medium-term missing piece of the puzzle.

Again, congratulations to the recruiting team.

As long as Kosi is in no way involved in a trade for Georgiades next year I’m happy.

Tim Lamb reviews our trade period on SEN at the above link

I like the cheeky chip at Geelong:  Don't all the players go there!

I'm never listening to him again.

Am I wrong for now feeling a bit ticked off at Port?

They ain’t gonna challenge for the flag next year, may as well have given us Mitch in our own more realistic pursuit of the flag in 2023.

I noticed the same thing. I took it as a slight on our team. Brisbane think we are going to finish significantly lower than Geelong.

I get that Richmond brought some decent talent in this trade period, as things currently stand do they have a draft pick before 2024?

2022:  53 and 63

2023:  Rnd 2 (tied to Coll), Rnd 3 (tied to Freo)

Hmm, not sure how they managed to trade out rnd 4 and rnd 1 next year as technically that isn't allowed.  But the data on the AFL website may not have been updated for the flurry of late trades.

Oh well, slim pickings for them this year.  They will have to trade out players next year to avoid the same.

Both Hardwick and Dusty are out of contract in 2024.  Maybe he is going all out for another premiership in the next two years then perhaps move on?

Tim Lamb comments are spot on I reckon

“We don't get tied up in the minutiae of every little deal, which I think is an approach that we take, which allows us to get deals done generally in a timely fashion.

“If you look at Luke (Jackson) going out, Brodie’s come in. We've lost Jayden Hunt as a free agent and Lachie Hunter comes in. Kade Chandler will come up from the rookie list to replace Toby Bedford, who we lost. Sam Weideman goes out, Josh Schache comes in. Then we've got a much-improved draft hand.”

I love how the club place’s  higher value on the overall list vs the individual trade.

Grundy is more value than Dogga in the next couple of years.

Scache is like for like for Wiedeman. More upside IMO as the Weed did not suit our system and Shack can play back and is tall to compete as a ruck.

Hunter provides a better midfield wing option we lacked with Jordan and Brayshaw Jordan and Brayshaw are better as other midfield options.

Chandler is like for like with Bedford.

We now have more variety and proven talent… and a better draft hand to play thid and next year

An overall improvement IMO

Hawks just giving away their midfield for nothing. Absolute shambles.

Freo getting O’Meara pisses me off. We need them to suck next year.

I wonder if he's hinting here that Hunter will play off half back if he's insinuating like for like with Hunt.

It's not like O'Meara is a particularly good player though. He's as slow as a wet week, not all that damaging and doesn't average anywhere near 25 possessions. Maybe he'll be alright alongside Freo's midfield, but he shouldn't be the difference in Freo's fortunes. I assume they view him as the mature age Mundy replacement, but nowhere near as smooth.

Agree, O'meara is no-where near the talent he was or could have been without the injuries.

The only impressive thing about O’Meara is his biceps

He'll be 29 next year and has a degenerative knee issue.

He's basically cooked.

  • NON-MFC: 2026 Opening Round

Finally the 2026 AFL Premiership Season is upon us. While Melbourne sits out Opening Round, there is still plenty of footy to enjoy with five non-MFC clashes to kick off the new season. It all begins on Thursday night with a blockbuster at the SCG as Sydney hosts Carlton in what should be a strong early test for both sides. On Friday night, Gold Coast gets its chance to open the season in front of a home crowd when the Suns and Christian Petracca take on Geelong at People First Stadium. Saturday features a double-header, starting in the afternoon with Greater Western Sydney and Clayton Oliver meeting the Hawks at Engie Stadium. That is followed on Saturday night by Brisbane Lions hosting the Western Bulldogs at the Gabba, with the Lions embarking on their campaign to win the Threepeat. Opening Round wraps up on Sunday night at the MCG, where St Kilda takes on Collingwood in the only game in town in the first week of the season. There is no shortage of storylines across the round, so discuss all the action from the non-MFC games of Opening Round.

  • PREGAME: St. Kilda

With just over two weeks until their opening match of the 2026 AFL Premiership season, the Demons are already well on the path to redemption and have the Saints firmly in their sights ahead of their mid-March clash at the MCG. What do you think the team will look like when they run out on to the G?

  • REPORT: Richmond

Mars is not usually a place known for lighting strikes but on Friday evening it happened twice in the vicinity of the stadium in Ballarat that carries the name and is a half completed building site with limited capacity for spectators.

  • VOTES: Richmond

Kozzy Pickett was the man of the match last week and has a vote lead over backup ruck Max Heath who didn't play this week and 5 votes over former Saint Jack Steele. Who gets the votes in this weeks shortened match win over the Tigers? Your votes please. 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1.

It's Game Day and the 2026 AFL Premiership season is almost upon us as the Demons take to the field for their final practice match before the first ball is kicked in anger in 16 days time. What are you expecting to see from the Dees today as they take on the Tigers at Mars Stadium in Ballarat?
