I also just want to say thank goodness Bedford got a full game and showed us what he can do last night. Yeah he may have only had the 2 tackles but his pressure was good and he was another small forward down there to create chances and his 2 goals were great. He needs to stay in.

I was at the game and i would say a good 20-25K were Brisbane supporters. We have been outnumbered again and it probably came through on the tele as well. 

I get its a Thursday night, but if it wasnt for the BCNA, i would suspect the crowd would have been 10-15K lower.

Glad I'm not the only the only one that thought this! Fritta had three occasions of clear front on contact, one of them the incident which Lyons got hurt. Great courage but not much sympathy for him when he created the situation.

They take forever to get uploaded lately. 

Michael Hibberd needs a pat on the back for his job on Cameron, would not know he was playing last night. Can never underestimate his value to the backline.

 

Can I just clarify that I was never really off the bandwagon, I just had to go for a comfort break so can i have my seat back please?

What an emphatic win.  Still stunned.

Were they what we were against Freo ? Either way I think our performance was as good as anyone has played this season but can we really take much away from whether the Lions are a genuine threat ? 

Agree with your points about the things we addressed.

We were able to address them because clearly we were not fatigued in the way we were in the three losses.

You can see that in the way Jackson, Lever and Brown, in particular moved. For one thing Brown could actually jump off the ground.

The other 'tell' was how trac, Sparrow and viney were able to power away from a contest, something all three struggled with in the three losses

But I wasn't fully confident we were fresh until the last 10 minutes of the first quarter when we were first able to blunt the lion's momentum, but more importantly, then lift our rating and start closing the vice and suffocating the lions, as we do when we are at our best. 

On the lions, I have zero doubt they were shagged. The interesting thing is the philosophy as to why.

They are in a very similar position to the cats, in so far as for the last few (3?) years they have finished top 4 but struggled in finals, and in the lions case, have gone out in straight sets.

And perhaps, like the cats they have reached the logical conclusion that they have haddes chance of beating a side as fit and relentless as we were in the finals last year or the tigers were in their premiership years.

Remember, we played the lions week one of last years finals, and they simply could no go with us. The contrast in fitness and ability to run out quarters and the game was stark.  

The lions may have thought, even at our very best, if the dees are at their best, we are only a 40-60 chance of beating them on their home deck.

So, lets keep smashing our players on the track, and be prepared to lose a game that we are a better than even money chance of losing anyway.

And by doing so, let's maximise our chances of being competitive against this same team come September.

I put very little stock in that performance in terms of providing a guide as to how big a threat they are.

Leaving their performance last aside, they are a good team, with an excellent list, but in terms of the contenders, I rate the dockers ahead of them, and perhaps the cats as at least an equal threat.

And the reason is that I don't think their defensive system is up to it. The dees, freo and the cats all have far superior defensive systems, that involve all team defence and brilliant zoning off and intercepts.

The lion's defensive stem is too old school, too one on one to work in 2022.

yeh you don't see that too often...reckon there was a free to Harmes just prior to that anyway so maybe justice served.  I noticed that first gamer was on Tracc for a while at one point.  Welcome to the AFL!  Reminded me a bit of the Watts intro.  Bad timing for him.

i reckon they do a great job and even inspired some supporters close to our section to cheer but I reckon they should spread out a bit more around the boundary with those megaphone thingies. Not the huge ones just enough to allow them to coordinate he cheering among themselves. They can then still face the crowds and lead the cheering from sections of the crowd that sit a little more quietly.

i noticed the Collingwood cheer squad spread out around the crowd behind vocal collection of supporters and just out volumes them when we were in Sydney last year. Our cheer squad tried ha d but were a small collective all grouped together, not spread out through supporters.

Agree. Having Max out gives us to have a different look at things that could be very beneficial to the rest of our season both in the middle and up forward.

He has always played taller than he is but is now playing bigger than he is. Hard as nails.

Interesting, watching the telly it looked and sounded like we had a far higher spread of support.

One of the first thing Goody said in the presser last night was that the team has been working incredibly hard in training for the past 3/4 weeks and last night was the first time we got the benefit of that.

It always frustrates me when umpires don't call back bad centre bounces, and last night, the first bounce was terrible!!  Dogga had no chance to contest it and they called play on.  

Another frustrating thing with the umpiring last night was how long they were giving players before calling play on after marks and free kicks.  It seemed an eternity.  It slowed the game down so much and seemed to go against everything the AFL wants from the game (quick game with the ball always in motion)

Any idea what the Carlton reject thought about the bruise-free football?

They started well in the 1st and we destroyed them in the 2nd!

Understand the loading (due to all your & Vipercrunch comments) and how teams can stop to a crawl in the last, as Demons did against Pies, Swans & Freo.

But we took them apart in the 2nd. Comparatively we were in front of Freo, Swans & Pies at half time, and lost multiple talls  mid game against all three, so structure fell over and added impact of loading, led to losses.

It was an exceptional Q2 similar to what we did to them in last years QF.

I was JK. We are extremely proud of our efforts last night. I woke this morning with no voice and a headache that’d drop a horse. I’m in a group chat with the Army and everyone’s the same way this morning. (But deliriously happy.)

I can’t imagine megaphones would be allowed since if they were, why isn’t any other squad using them?

As for spreading us out among the crowd, that kinda defeats the whole purpose. That would necessitate several squads and coordinating chants would be impossible. 

And you can’t use Collingwood as the yardstick. They have bigger numbers. But the main difference is that they clearly don’t have the strictly enforced rules that we have, eg, no alcohol, no swearing and no IQs in single digits. 😁

Rich took three lifetimes to kick in on several occasions last night. It was farcical.

I have to admit I was a little worried at half time, 30 points up after a cracking quarter. We’ve tended to rest on our laurels and let teams back into it this season, particularly the last 3 games. Not last night though. We powered on in the second half. Very reminiscent of our finals form last year. 

no doubt in my mind we’re back to our best, focussed and ready for another crack at the flag

Fritta was absolutely monstered last night. Often illegally, often by multiple players. How he bounces back is incredible. He creates space for others by dragging defenders to him and uses space to create opportunities. He in fact makes space where none xists by just one quick step or movement then disposing. I wasn't concerned that he didn't hanpass to Trac, he needs to be selfish when he gets the ball to continue the role he plays .

I am always amazed that he seems to be n the wrong pocket for a left footer, although it doesn't seem to affect his accuracy which pocket he is in.

Yes, you're right.

We were brilliant in the second, and all game really.

In my honest opinion, even if they were at their very best we win that game by 4 plus goals.

It is likely we will have some more sub optimal performances in the next 3-4 weeks, perhaps as soon as next week against the crows (maybe, hopefully, before a freshen up ahead of the Cats?)

But that was a taster of what we can expect in the last few games of the H&A and into the finals. No other team can go with us when we are playing like that, as the last 40 odd games we have played demonstrates. No doubt, the other teams know that too. It is why are odds for the flag never drifted out past $3.60, even after three straight losses.

It is also why we are now, after one win, back into $2.80 to win the flag. For context we were $2.70 at the start of the season,  and are almost at the same price now.
