Petty must play forward ( if fit )

Featured Replies

Can understand the sentiment but our problems are midfield-related.

Is it a coincidence that a quiet/ineffective Petracca has seen us lose two on the trot?

Why, Gawn aside, can we not take a contested mark?

Why has our pressure around the pill dropped so dramatically this year? Read on here we are ranked 17th which is damning.

With Salem returning is it time to get Gus back on the wing?

Are ANB, Spargo and Kozzie as effective as they were last year?

Are our negating players (Harmes and Sparrow) doing their jobs, especially scoring on turnovers?

We tried that in 2019, it didn't work.

He's also badly banged up and may not play this week anyway.

Also don't need Tomlinson in defence, he was awful.

Nobody was particularly good in 2019 - so hard to judge him on that.

Um,, sounds like a lot of Demonlanders have lost faith in Weeds!!

The best we can hope for is May's return gets Lever and Petty back playing closer to their best in defence where they belong.

Try Tomlinson up forward... Daw is pure depth and won't play unless gawn or jackson are unavailable.

Petty stays - he is the next May and stalwart of our defence for the decade to come.

Gawn has to play 60% forward and let LJ play against the Pies 2nd fiddle.

No

The solution to our under performing forward line, is for the forward line to start performing. Petty is a defender. He has learnt his craft as a defender for the past 2 to 3 years in a system based environment. This isn’t junior football. Ben and Mitch Brown will be the tall forwards this week. Ben Brown will start kicking goals, lock it in.

Personally I'd like Weid to have his head shaved, some 'Jake the Muss' and inked tear drop tattoos, and accidently triple his AADD medication along with 3 double espressos, while watching the Rocky/Creed/name your favorite inspirational movies.

Oh and am happy to see Petty tried forward, I think swingman/utility tall is a great asset to have. But it does depend on back six being settled. Personally I think Tomlinson deserves another go in defense just not as a pseudo May. and please Rivers and Hibbo into the team.

Great post….I think hunt’s done an admirable job this year in an essentially new role for him but I think we’ve lost a little drive out of our full back line with him seemingly being solely focussed on a lock down role…..hibberd may give us a bit of both??

Hunt could be a better match up for Ginnivan than what hibberd may be but hibberd could be a better match up for de goey or hoskin Elliot?

Or maybe I just like the romance of getting our premiership defenders back together again??

The other option Nicko ... play Hunt & Hibbo.

Hibb covers the most dangerous small which he's done successfully before.

Hunt plays on the next small-medium/quick forward who might not need such close checking.  This frees him up to get off the leash a little to hopefully provide a bit more line breaking run off HB on the counter?

That would mean sacrificing someone else.  Hec i'll be strung up for suggesting this but that would probably be Bowser 😬  (and no im not suggesting we should minions... just a bit of hypothetical nonsense here)

Some good points here DT.  In particular the pressure side.  Could Goody be holding the boys back a little, saving some tickets for a big push in the run home?

Maybe not yet but we are probably closer than we think to trying out these kinds of experiments.

We are going to need something big from Weid. A consistent effort where he can at least provide a presence physically. Now if this doesn't work as well as we'd like there's probably not a lot of other options so it's definitely worth the thought.

Well i remember the '88 elimination against WCE, it was a shocking firdt half by the Dees, we swung Sean Wight forward in the second half and it was a different team, we stormed home at VFL park.

Can’t say I understand why this forum loves Daw and wants him in the seniors. He couldn’t get a game for North so not sure what he would bring.

Love the option

also love how it when we can post without hating on each other’s options….👍🏻

Under the circumstances, and with Lever returning to solidify the defense, we know what we’ll get from Harrison, and placing him at centre half forward seems the only viable solution at the moment to our underperforming forward line.

For the record I swapped Lever’s name for May’s

Gary Lyon mooted this idea on SEN this morning too

so we score 100 points, and have 110 scored against us, and people want to swap one of the three pillars of our backline out to send em forward?

i don't understand the logic of doing so whatsoever

Freo's defence stack up well. I think we play BBB and/or Weid and keep Petty down back for the remainder of the season.

Im not against the idea, but it takes time for players to slot into a position - you cannot expect Petty to flick a switch and expect some results immediately. Explore it in pre-season and commit to it if it works. We have the stock in Turner and Tomlinson to cover.

Names from the past of players who have played both ends: Ray Biffen,  Sean Wight. Something needs to change, we are working too hard for our goals. Also D. Neitz.

In my opinion Petty is our best tall key defender - pity we don't have two of him then we could afford the luxury of having him play forward

May has been better but he seems good for at least 1 or 2 absolute howlers per game these days gifting the opposition easy goals - needs to eliminate from his game asap

If Smith is fit I'd be tempted to give him a run in the F50 - but its unlikely given he has missed so much football

For the next couple of weeks, I'd opt for stability.
That's something that's been lacking across ever line this season as apposed to last.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
