I really hope so. He makes our backline so much better. A very underrated player imo

Given our defence has been holding up well I’d be up for giving him a game at Casey to build match fitness before being him in.Ā

Look, I am inclined to agree with you. I see no changes for round 5.

I think he already played one game there last week? The Selection Committee will make the correct call but I agree with you, if he needs another run at VFL level that is where he should play...although that comes with other risks - Ben Brown as an example

That's not the point If you make the action you accept the consequences.

Mentioning the Gaff/ Brayshaw incident is not the smartest comparison. The mantra is DONT THROW your arms or fist around loosely.Ā

The memory of the horrible pictures of Andrew Brayshaws jaw are about as graphic as this type of action gets.

Any logic or sympathy for BBB goes out the window immediately in your inappropriate post memory.Ā

As once when go you include the possibility of a player risking suspension in team selection?

Get real TSD !Ā

Is there any chance Petty would play forward in place of the Weid?

Not the time for experiment but.... What about Smith for Weeds and play him Forward?? Any takers?

Doing the typical Demonlander thing and reading a bit into things, but going by Goody's presser today is sounds like Petty might play VFL this week just to get a bit more touch/form. He didn't specifically say that, but emphasized Petty was 'physically ready' but they'll look at whether he's ready for AFL footy yet.

As I said, I’d like him in the team but it’s not up to me or even you…it’s just an opinion.

I also believe it to be a fact that some AFL players receive tougher attention at the lower level.Ā

Petty plays if he's ready for mine - too good a player to be kicking around in the VFL

You betcha, Picket. You betcha. You and I seem to be the only posters who seem to appreciate his true attributes - and according to his father, he is more than a son-of-a-gun, as well. His pace, alone, would be an meaningful attribute up there.

Ah whoops, didn’t realise he got a full run at VFL last week. I’d still be leaning towards ā€œain’t broke, don’t fix itā€. Last week was a defensive masterclass, I like the idea of rewarding those doing their job at AFL level.Ā

As for the idea of playing him as a forward, I’d argue that’s counterproductive and also could throw up more headaches than it solves. What if he kills it, how do we fit them all in!Ā

Ah these were the problems I used to look at with envy of other cubs not long ago! 😁

I would be shocked if petty is selected.

Interrupted preseason and noĀ preseason practice games.

One vfl game with limited minutes is too limited a preparation.

And besides, they don't need to take any risks. We are in ok shape down back.

The two statements are not contradictory are they?

We're in ok shape down back, but will be improved by Smith replacing tomo.

Just as we will be improved when Petty comes back in.

Just as we will be improved when Salem comes back in.

I agree, i think Smith will come straight back. I had been thinking that he would be coming in for Hunt. I can't decide if hunt looked more solid last week or if I just see it less when I am not at the ground. I love what Hunt brings when he is in form but he has looked shaky to me earlier in the season. If the FD read is that Hunt is shaping up then it will be Tommo who makes room.

I mean, Joel Smith is on limited preparation also, not to the same extent of course; but Brown wasn't brought back in after missing a week so can't see Smith (who's not really needed given we're already in 'ok shape down back') coming straight back in, especially after a goalless half.

That's leaving aside the argument about who's a better option out of Smith and Tomlinson (although we may have been given a clue by our skipper as to Maysie's thoughts...) ;)

Wish someone pumped me up for doing nothing like people do with SmifĀ

Important to get some game time into him. I suspect he is a depth player, but it’s vital he has more experience to be ready if we need him to be (at any stage). Smith is still relatively inexperienced. We need to see what he’s got, is he improving? These are questions we need to answer, and we do so because we have had injuries. Hunt is in the same boat. We are going to need to play these guys throughout the year, whether it’s when we test players or whether they step in for someone injured. To my eye, Smith made a lot of sense while Lever was out, but equally, I also didn’t like what I seen on game day, where Smith opted to mark instead of punch, and wasn’t great by foot. Maybe he’ll be better with Lever in, or maybe we as a side will be better off without Smith. This is something worth persisting with till we know the answer. Clearly Smith is rated within the playing group.Ā

Hunt is not the player of 2016 / 17. Everyone refers to his "run & carry" but since 2021 he has been defence first. I can't see that anyone's torched him this year so I guess he's doing his job. He does cough up the odd howler but beware of just looking at his DE stats as a number of his possessions are in a situation where he just has to clear the ball from pressurised defensive positions.

I expect Petty will replace Tommo in due course. Again, Tommo hasn't done much wrong but in my view, Petty is the better footballer by some margin.

Yeah, I hear you, but I'm actually just responding to stuff that I have seen at the game. I didn't see it on TV at the Port game and I'm not even sure I'm right. Like I say, I have historically loved what he can do, but he has looked quite indecisive with the ball in his hands and has coughed it up on a number of occasions or kicked a howler. If he stays in then I guess the FD are happy with what he is doing, I'm happy with that.

Given the depth of talent we have in defence once we have everybody full fit and injury free I think we are going to have to think about giving minutes or games to players further forward be that in the middle or up front.Ā
So I’m open to the idea of Smith getting a run up front. Could also see Rivers getting some midfield time and bowser at half forward.Ā

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kate’s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwood’s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasn’t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's Ā six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his team’s unfulfilled potential rang true … well, almost.Ā
