We were bottom in 08.

I meant the 2011’s but if I write that everyone would think I meant 2011, the year 😁

(and still rolling on not being bottom since 2009)

That is correct

If we win today I assume it will be a record for the closest days between premierships for an AFL club?

I would certainly be an achievement with respects to men's & women's double, but in a more general sense, surely there are teams have also won a reserves and/U19 premership  together with a seniors premership at some stage when those teams were still being feilded?

The most dominant 1.5 quarters in GF history.

Yeah

We’re 4-0 with long faces cos we’re not kicking 16 goals in 40 minutes each week 😅

How about a 4 pronged trade result that went a long way towards helping the team win a premiership ... and maybe another flag or 2 as a result

With astute trading that covered a number of seasons we converted  Hogan, Watts & Tyson into Sparrow, Ben Brown, May & Fritsch

In the Hogan trade we received pick 23 (Sparrow) and pick 6 (May) We also gave up pick 65 (a negligible pick)

For Watts we received pick 31 (used on Fritsch ... still only 25 years old with 6 goals in a GF)

And for Tyson we received Preuss in exchange ... we later traded Preuss for a 2nd round draft pick.  And in that same trade period we acquired Ben Brown for a 2nd round draft pick (around about the same pick number as what we received for Preuss)

And that's apart from trading and nailing all sorts of other picks from the 2012 off season onwards

The net result is something that we can rightfully be quite proud of

Probably one of the best rebuilds on record ... especially when we consider where we started off - ground zero?

That's right up there in the 'best-of' trade results, radar

But us trading up to get Oliver and the 'Strategic planning' to acquire Jackson were masterstrokes ... those off-season surgeries sure paid off leading into the 2019 season

Trading up to get Bowey is another ... who is to say that he doesn't become a premier on-baller later on?  Did he not spend his junior days as a midfielder?

For years we seemed to be trading away “next year’s first round pic” for instant gratification.
Those guys know their stuff.

And Longmire?

Don't know the exact deal but Essendon destroyed Freo in trades when they first entered the comp. Git Lloyd and Lucas for Ridley (who?) or something like that.

We also got Farmer for Phil Gilbert from memory and Adelaide also got Andrew McLeod. No wonder Freo stunk for so long.

Luckily we made the finals in 2018 or it would have been the first decade since the 70’s where we failed to play in September

Destroyed isn't quite the right word. Draft tampering is.

The trade was not ridley for Lloyd and Lucas

Freo never had access to Lloyd as he was in the concession (for losing an uncontracted player) draft only open to 16 year olds.

Freo wanted Ridley (uncontracted), Tony Delaney and Dale Kickett from essendon. Essendon advised freo that the trades for Delaney (pick 4!!!!🤮) and Kickett wouldn't go through unless freo agreed to not sign any players from the teams that finished the season below essendon and so giving essendon pick 1 in the 16 year old concession draft.

Freo being freo agreed to this.

Horrible trade anyway, but not quite how it is generally remembered

And pure draft tampering by essendon

Melbourne stunk up the concession draft by not picking Steven King who was available (we got one of the cockatoo-collins brother)

Carlton haven’t beaten us in a final since 1962

These sorts of records are not rare enough ie too common because we don't play some teams often enough for record to be an achievement.

For instance we have never lost a Grand Final to Adelaide Brisbane Carlton Freo Geelong GWS Gold Coast North Port Saints Swans Eagles. Fact is we have never played them in a Granny!

We have lost in a GF to Pies 1958 Bombers 2000 1946 Dogs 1954 Hawks 1988 and drew with Bombers  in 1948 ( and won the replay)

And your post that we have not lost to Carlton in Finals  since 1962 is not really significant IMO as we have only played them in Finals THREE times ( 1988 1994 and 2000 ) since then, I think.  These records are finished by lack of genuine competition versus many teams.

I have a record I think, my sons and I caught the first Jetstar fight to Vietnam in two years. We are riding motorcycles from HCMC to Hanoi (about 2000km) On the front of my bike is a Melbourne Member 2022 sticker. I am prepared to bet that's a first. Go Deees.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
