I think there’d be more than a few that were disappointed with that crowd. Free entry, first crack at finals, grand final on the line. I understand it was really miserable weather but I didn’t feel the club and the AFL pumped it up enough.

I would’ve hoped for 10k+ in these circumstances.

Anyway I’ll go to positive now, what a great achievement for the girls and club. So proud of them, they played like the MFC across the board. We have built a culture and that goes from Casey Mens, to AFLW, to the mens team. So glad a few of the boys were there to watch it.

McNamara’s goal could’ve been our best of the weekend were it not for Langdon. Paxman was tireless as always, and Bannan has some serious jets on her. Adelaide are a very good side and as I speak seem to be doing a number on Freo, so hopes of a home GF look extremely unlikely. But either way we are in it, and if we play our best it stacks up.

What a great time our club is having. Keep your eye on the red and blue!

I thought it was a disappointing crowd. There was plenty of Lions supporters there as well, reckon the Dees contingent was no more than 4,000

having the mens game the night before had an impact. I couldn;t go to both so chose the womens prelim but most would have chosen the Essendon game. Pity it wasn't played on a weekend when the men were inter-state

Freo have given themselves a chance here. The crows have [censored] the bed a few times in big games so wouldn't surprise me if they coughed this one up as well

Real pity it’s not played in spring in clear air but that’s hopefully getting fixed soon.

Also we have to wonder if the Casey crowd won’t go to the G and the G crowd never get to Casey so we don’t build a following.

But again, that’s another more complex issue

It was disappointing no matter the excuses

I definitely agree that the men playing the night before negativity impacted the crowd. I know many people would’ve made the call that they could only get to one match for the weekend, so I can’t begrudge that. I also agree that if the guys were interstate it would’ve been a very different story.

Agree wholeheartedly on disappointing crowd. It’s national representative footy and deserves better. Will happen, but too slow for mine. Was a great atmosphere at the game (Warney Stand) and the footy was tough, hard-fought stuff. Frustrated me that the Lions so often waited for us to take possession, just waiting to lay tackles, then to be rewarded by some poor umpiring. Congrats to the mighty Dees, who rose above it, they were fantastic. Alyssa Bannan gets my excited anticipation going like watching Kozzie Pickett, and when she runs away from opponents it goes through the roof. She’s a gun. Fabulous stuff! Usual suspects were great - Paxxie, Daisy, Lauren Pearce, Libby Birch, Tyla Hanks, Eliza McNamara. Go Freo, and let’s get 40,000 at the G!!!!

Totally agree Webber.
Lightning quick and finishes beautifully at top pace.

On the umpiring: why doesn’t the AFLW draw from the same pool of umpires as the blokes? Not that the men’s umpires are always that good either, but if the AFLW is the elite competition, they should have access to the supposed best umpires in the business right?

The Crows beat Freo unfortunately (played just after our game). We're heading to Adelaide for the final

Noticed that the clock didn't restart for five seconds. So it was a final 41 seconds of play.

Certainly felt like a long 30ish seconds

AFLW umpires is the their down from AFL but above league level for umpires (these are the one's coming through the system into the afl in the future).  I have a feeling they umpire it differently due to the skill of the girls competition. Many things that would be are int he AFL are not paid in the AFLW, which makes it frustrating to watch.  It like they give them more time due to different skill levels.  Not that they should.

Really glad I went. Smallish crowd, but great energy.

And it was fantastic that the team were able to spend time on the ground after tge win, such it up and engage with the fans

Appalling standard of umpiring

The weather didn’t help. Horrible day to go outside.

Yeah, the whole interpretation of holding the ball, incorrect disposal seems to be non existent. You'd wonder if it's a worthwhile tactic for Mick to tell the team to just try and bust through tackles because you're never penalised for holding or dropping the ball. I think we got our first free for incorrect disposal by a Brisbane player with a minute to go in the game.

Anyways, super proud of the girls. A great grinding win.

I really think the women can draw in a whole group of young fans if we promote them properly. It's a different standard of footy but still enthralling to watch.

Go Dees

Still flying high, go Dees! Some incredible efforts in this game and a nailbiting finish - although, of course, never in doubt!

I moved on from the poor umpire about three seasons ago but understand why it annoys newcomers. And like many decisions in AFLW, the MCG venue for today was short-term pain for long-term gain.

Sweet Grand Final dreams, Demonlanders!

Sinead Goldrick has to be one of the hardest, see ball get ball, players I have seen.

She must run through brick walls in her spare time.

Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?
