York Park in Invermay (basically Launceston) is considered the best surface to play on in all of Australia and has shown that the crowds will go there. Not sure what they will do in Hobart: the North Hobart oval is good, but the facilities are rubbish and there is little room to develop. If a business model and government investment is available, they will build a new stadium in Hobart somewhere. North Hobart Oval is too small and pretty run down now, and there’s nowhere to park. Pity as that’s where I grew up watching the North Hobart Demons (and how I came to barrack for Melbourne). Back to back flags in 91 and 92 were awesome as a kid. Good omen - 21 and 22 for us? The public would flip their lids of the state government committed funds for a new footy ground. There’s just no appetite for it given the state of our health and education system here. If an AFL team came to town, it would have to be based at Bellerive Oval (currently named Blundstone Arena). Quote
Bendigo_Demon 418 Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 The Hobart Devils were an NBL team, and I would assume that they still have the rights to the name. Quote

We had a VFL team called the Devils too in the early 00s. We were pretty strong for a few years with the likes of Ben Beams kicking around. I doubt defunct teams get to keep rights to names. Quote

Mate of mine was down there mid week and will be involved in (without being specific) some capacity in the new stadium/precint My understanding is that the AFL strategy has been to have two interstate sides in each state so that every week there is a game being played so their is a continuity of footy if that makes sense. Wonder what the strategy for Tassie will be? AFL game every second week (that is my guess) or will the Hawthorns and Norths still play a few down there. In all honesty, I have no idea what the game plan will be if a new team is created. Quote

Mickey 4,777 Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 Why can't they be the Tassie Mariners? I know that is the U/18 team's name, but maybe the can be like the GWS/GC academies. And it's not that close to the Dockers. Quote
Sideshow Bob 2,498 Posted April 3, 2022 Posted April 3, 2022 As long as it's not the Tassie Van Diemen's.... that would be a little too close to home! The Tassie Convicts. Give the Port Adelaide's prison bars... not like they're allowed to use them 🤪 Quote

The NT gov will cover the funding gap based on social impact (a reduction in crime etc.) with help from the federal side. A new stadium in the city aligning Darwin with Asian sporting interests is also being proposed to bring in extra cash. As an aside, Peter Jackson is on the taskforce for establishing an NT team. Edit: Just noticed that the NT gov put out another tender last week for consulting on the social impact of an AFL team (my prediction is that PwC or maybe KPMG will scoop that one up). https://tendersonline.nt.gov.au/Tender/Details?id=20617 A report had already been commissioned by the AFLNT taskforce by a lesser-known consultancy. This feels like a step up to gain some political influence. https://www.aflnt.com.au/sites/default/files/uploads/NT AFL Team Scoping Report.pdf Whether people agree with the concept or not, it's an interesting proposal, and possibly a world first for elite sport. And unlike the proposed Tasmanian team, I think a lot of NT-born people here would switch allegiances, especially when there are such strong family connections. It might impact us - but is also an opportunity to capitalise. 1 Quote

Both NT and Tas are footy heartlands that would add to the national competition. Can't imagine the NT side would beat the Tassie side away very often and vice versa 😂 1 Quote

I think that last part is wildly underestimated by even those promoting an NT team based on social impact. Corporates will be jumping to get on board a majority indigenous-run and manned elite sporting team. And the first part - a marketing call-out for AFL fans to support the NT team as their second, through at least low-cost token memberships to make it happen, I think would reap huge rewards. Quote
