Shout out to Essendon for putting all of their time and effort in locking down Petracca which allowed Oliver and Brayshaw to run rampant.

So often, players like Harmes, ANB, Hunt, Sparrow, Rivers etc... don't get enough acclaim. Harmes was very good tonight, and Hunt had some moments, but the other three were poor. Twice, ANB did not commit when he should have and that is so unlike him. And Rivers' kicking has been a liability in the past 2 games.

The team is winning but our basic skills over the first 3 games have been absolute junk.

Smith quietly becoming one of our best in the back 6

Very consistent start to the year

Happy with the 4 points would have preferred it wrapped up much earlier .

Brayshaw outstanding really admire the turn around to his career

Lot of people expecting every single one of our players to dominate every week, if that was the case we would win by 100 points every week.

SOOOOO happy for Weids!!!!!!

You could FEEL his confidence growing as the game went on. ❤️💙

He needs to now back it up with a minimum 3 goals.

He did some important things tonight, but boy his mistakes are howlers.

But what's happened to the offensive side of his game SWYL

Ask the coaches. Maybe he is concentrating on defence at the moment.
Remember we are now the hunted, it is a totally new dynamic

We are 3-0 with a lot of improvement to come

Only 1 turn over today

Yeah I’m not questioning his defensive efforts, he just needs to get involved more around the fall of the ball.

I agree. But other teams are watching him a lot closer now.
he is still learning the game

No way mate. You’ve just forgotten what losses feel like.

No I haven't, and never will. I have been following the Dees since the 70's. Trust me, I know what losing feels like!

Our basic skills were so bad at times, I felt we deserved to lose. We are too good a team now to turnover the ball, and miss goals like tonight. Makes me squirm watching it.

Gus - was that his best game for the Demons.? 20 marks is rarely seen and such composure and clean ball use.

10/10

Glad you mention this.

No one will say this from an external point of view but James Jordon role on the wing is very underrated.  His work rate and defensive running is off the charts. Did a lot of unrewarded running and held his width well.

Harmes, Sparrow and Rivers were all good tonight. Hunt not so much for me.

We played at Melbourne level for 10 minutes and won by 28. Can’t really ask for much more. We are just going and banking those points while playing very average footy. If that’s not the sign of a good team what is?

And we won with little output from Trac.
Clarry, Langdon and Gus superb.

Jackson is a game shifter. When he goes in the middle we get on top. He has to take more centre bounces. Gawn is just too predictable in there where’s Jackson gets his own ball. He’s a wonder that boy.

Well done Weideman for taking his chances.

There is SO much improvement to come which given we are 3-0 is bloody exciting.

That was a deplorable exhibition of AFL football up to half time. At least after half time our scoring ratio (goals v points) improved.

A better opposition would've buried us by half time on the basic skill errors we made.

I know 4 points is 4 points etc......but some big improvements are needed in a lot of basic areas.

We almost need a loss to wake some of our guys up and remind them that the execution of basic skills - like taking an uncontested mark instead of dropping it & turning it over - is a minimum requirement to stay in the team!

Very pleased for the Weid.....but he should've kicked 6!

Why would trac signal he thought it was touched. Just shut up trac.

If you said at the start of the game we'd win by 29 I would have been rapt. If you said we'd win by 29 at 3/4 time I probably would have said no way. But it took all night to put them away.

It was great after Langdon kicked that goal to see the Essendon fans around me leave. Stew on that all weekend.

So happy for weiderman. He clunked some good ones

You clamp down on Petracca and all that does is let Oliver run rampant.

7 mentioned that truck has strapping on his right knee which seem to restrict his movement. He certainly didn’t look  to be moving freely so he could have a niggle there.

Was not a happy boy on the bench. I think he’s definitely carrying something.

Hardly got out of second gear, still won by nearly 30, and the scoreboard flattered our opponents.

Super happy for Weid. Showed why many have backed him, even if those of us who have had started to doubt. Excellent game.

Likewise, he did surprise me and my mates, but it took a few first qtr jolts. Can he improve on this performance? It would be good to see it take place, reliably.

Well if you're out in the field you are deemed fit. Teams are going to put work into trac& that's ok because we don't need him to get 39 every week.

If he has a quiet game then others will step up like Oliver did.

Our goal kicking does my head in.
Keep kicking points from set shots giving the opposition a sniff and it'll come back to bite us.

20 marks for Gus!!! Wow…

Difficult to overlook what Gus adds each week. Creates plays left, right and centre.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • PREGAME: Rd 18 vs North Melbourne

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
