We usually rate players by their on field performance rather than the fact the club may or may not have wanted to select another player that may or may not suit the role of the player we have.

GWS must think that Toby Greene is a "jobber" too then with their continued intetest in small forwards.

They have a heap of small forwards.... think we should organise a raid of one of them end of 2025 or 2026 actually.

Plenty of Vic boys there and they can't play them all.

Seems to be a better tagger than small forward 😉

FWIW;

Who is the fastest player in the Melbourne Demons?

Kade Chandler

When it came to the club's speed Demons, Kade Chandler topped the charts with a scintillating 35.2km/hr sprint recorded in Opening Round against Sydney. Caleb Windsor and Kysaiah Pickett were the other Demons to feature in the top five speeds recorded by a Melbourne player in 2024.”

I think burst is more important for a footballer given the lack of space and Kade did a 3.06 20m in his draft year.

I'm not entirely convinced by a one off GPS number, especially at the SCG in opening round, but if he truly does have that elite top end speed I hope we see it more often. I can't remember a time when Chandler was in a foot race and completely burnt his opponent, where as Windsor and Pickett it comes through in their games.

Remember listening to an interview with Windsor last year where he was asked whether he was the quickest player at the club.

"Nah Chin's got me covered comfortably".

Yep, it's creating separation in those first few steps...

I'd like to see a race. Chandler might be coming through like Gout Gout. Even more impressive given the wind resistance his chin must cause.

Kynan did brilliantly in the time trial

And his game saving cameo against the Roos during the year shows that he has the tools. Would like to see him get a run at it

He is quick. You don’t have to like him but blaming his lack of speed isn’t a reasonable reason to dislike him.

In terms of Brown's speed, if he plays a role similar to nibblas role, the critical thing is not acceleration (ie burst speed, or speed off the mark) it's what they call striding speed - ie ability to cover ground, say 80 to 130 metres, at a really good clip.

And then the other factor is their ability to do multiple such sprints all game- which is where the need to also have elite aerobic capacity and endurance comes in.

I think at least a couple of players could play a similar role at any one time ie it's not inconceivable Brown AND Sharp could play in the same team playing much the same role.

Interested to hear what regular Casey watchers think of Brown this season.

Got a senior game very early last year (as sub) but then seems to have been ignored ever since. Is he just not showing much at the moment?

him and spargo are competing for the same spot, seems like goody wont ever drop him after several sub par performances

Decision making with ball in hand and overall disposal efficiency is not to AFL standard and probably has not improved much this year. His speed, work rate and tackling pressure is awesome though. He is still lightly framed as well.

I just don't see how he can possibly be worse than players such as Tholstrup (1 goal and 1 goal assist in 4 games) and Spargo (1 goal and 4 goal assists in 7 games).

At the very least Brown's tackle numbers will be off the chart.

He's putting out ok numbers at Casey. Had 25 touches and 10 tackles last weekend.

I am a HUGE Brown fan, attacks the ball and tackles with gusto, serious pace and in my view should be in the team without doubt!

Brown has lots of upside. His main inconsistency is with disposal, and I haven't noticed a marked improvement this year at Casey. He must know we have enough blokes who can't regularly hit up team mates on the lead. He must know that if he gets his ability to hit targets up to 'very good' he will be selected. Ball is in his court!

If Tholstrup didn’t have a mullet and the ‘personality’, people would be calling for him to be dropped weekly.

That's a pretty good summation of how I see him.

I really want him to break through as he's got some great attributes.

...but he has a bit of work to do.

I agree with you, as usual.

To me Tholstrup is a 6/10 in just about every trait. Far be it from me to criticise Jason Taylor who’s hit most high picks out of the park, but I don’t see any standout weapons that a top 15 pick should have. He’s a decent kick, a decent mark, decent physicality, seems a good teammate. But a pick 50 would get you that. I don’t see any class.

I’m worried he’s a Luke Tapscott.

Jesus it’s a bit early to say that, what’s Kolt played 15 games? And I don’t Think he’s played more then 5 consecutively, we need to give him a decent run at it.

I know what you’re saying and that he hasn’t shown a lot yet but he’s had quite a few almost games but he does the little things the box score won’t show you. He’ll come good, people seem to forget it’s his second year after an injury interrupted preseason.

  • PREVIEW: Brisbane

And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

The Demons head back out on the road in Round 10 when they travel to Queensland to take on the reigning Premiers and the top of the table Lions who look very formidable. Can the Dees cause a massive upset? Who comes in and who goes out?
