Under the circumstances while RDB or Neal would have been chosen ( I am certain Gary would have agreed with that also ) had we played at the MCG your remarks are not necessarily needed as total success was not the ultimate result of either of Ron's or Neals coaching stints ( despite their undoubted efforts and strengths and Club loyalty ).

Garys involvement in Neelds coaching disaster was not great but the Club had plenty of other problems at that time that led to our 2012/13 wreckage.

I vividly remember speaking with a rusted on Pies fan of my age ( early sixties) at the time and he endorsed Neeld as the major midfield strategist in their 2009/2012 success and 2010 flag.

Neeld could always claim he walked into a train wreck which I  think  was started when we couldn't persuade or relate to Kevin Sheedy after ND 's departure.

That I believe put us back a majority of a decade until Roosy played the saviour we now acknowledge someone with experience was needed.

LIke all of us, Gary Lyon is a fallible human being. For sure, he has done well out of his career as a footballer, but his love of the club is not in doubt. I dont understand the semi-dislike for him, I really don't. Those who are immaculate in their judgements over a lifetime, let them cast the first stone!

Let us not forget that there are currently four living Melbourne premiership captains. Insofar as Noel McMahen and John Beckwith are in good health, I hope they all play a role on December 5 with RDB and Maxy.

To be honest, my antipathy towards Garry was officially gone the moment he presented the cup. It marked his unambiguous transition to elder statesman figurehead and club booster. I love him in that role as it suits him down to the ground.

When his role was ‘unofficial club powerbroker’, he did a lot of damage. But I reckon Jimmy’s reign as president probably deserves more stick than it does, but he has always been one of the people I admire most in life despite that. We all make mistakes and the passage of time has healed the wound of the Neeld appointment, Bailey sacking and saving CS and Connolly’s jobs.

Hell, I’m over what happened with Connolly’s time at the club. There’s probably only one person I’d find hard to forgive from that clique and we probably know who that is.

It’s time to largely move on.

Tom Scully!!!!!

A very heart warming moment to see Neale Daniher being able to see our drought breaking Premiership Cup for the Melbourne Football Club.

I am sure a few tears of joy were shed. 😭

The fact that Neale continues to hold on while MND ravages his body is an incredible inspiration. The man is a legend!

Agree totally Cracker and Neal as well. If fit enough.  And in the flag raising in Round1

That picture of Neale with the Cup aays it all. The look of contentment and sheer joy on his face.

you are part of that journey Neale

A proud Demon

Great picture here but I can’t put a name to all of them. The guys to the right of Holland/Leoncelli I can’t place.

Grinter next to Nicho, I think Andrew Daff, is 2nd from left (Ex- club doctor).
And Chris Jones is mo down the front, I think was part of the fitness staff in late 90s' early 00s

No idea of the other 2 at the back.

There was a petition circulating for Danners to present the cup. He politely declined saying he should not be given preferential treatment: https://www.96fm.com.au/newsroom/neale-daniher-responds-to-the-petition-to-get-him-to-perth-for-the-afl-grand-final/

As for Barass it would have been a big call for someone in their 80s who has been struggling healthwise to do a fortnight's quarantine in a motel...

Just imagine the back-to-back-to-back. It'll all be settled then.

The drought-breaker.
The Barassi flag.
The Daniher flag.

Thank you very much MFC.

Despite the good intentions to get Neale , his health would have prevented a flight to perth and 2 weeks in a hotel room further prevented  him  ( if eddie couldnt get in neale no chance from chairman macgowan )Gary was fortunate to get the work gig in perth for fox .

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
