There is NO way JV ignored an option to LJ because heโ€™s leaving for Freo. Viney wants MFC to win more than anything.

May and Brayshaw in robust discussion was totally fine. Brayshaw was first to May to console him after his clanger intercepted by Bont.

Thank you for pointing this out, saved me the trouble.

I just shake my head at some of the drivel posted on here.

ย

Anyone else heard that peanut Craig Hutchison on Footy Classified twice now talk about West Coast walking LJ through to the pre season draft for nothing? WTF is that guy on about? Surely we can't lose out of this if Luke decides that he wants to go back to WA?

I believe Luke Jackson is massively overated and if we can negotiate well we will be very well compensated with some excellent types that will suit our needs!

I'm in the same camp. Until i see sustained output week-in-week-out at a high level, then i wont change that opinion. Playing 1.5 quarters in the GF still only counts for 1.5 quarters of great football. Folks on here talk like that quadruples his talent. I'm afraid it doesn't. He still has plenty of upside, but im not convinced its 'generational talent' just yet. There is only a lot of hype.

In all seriousness though why would any Victorian team ever recruit a WA talent? I get that *we* got a premiership of which he was a significant contributor but flags are rarer than unobtainium, and losing a top tier draft after only three seasons... well holistically from a broad perspective you just don't take that risk.ย

Seriously, the whole "go home" factor for WA is a little pathetic. These are grown men and they act like they're teenagers coming back from war. If it were a once off or happening towards the end of someone's career then fair enough but after three [censored] seasons? Every single non-WA team is going to look at this and seriously question the risk. We got VERY lucky and it paid off hugely for us.

I don't care what anyone says, moves like this aren't good for the industry or talent pool.

Let's seriously think about this. He's in the home of football, playing at the MCG, in one of the best cities in the world, for one of the best teams in the league, for the reigning Premier, and you're telling me that the "allure" of "going home" is greater than staying on for another 3-4 years? After only three years? PLEASSSSSE!

If he does leave I just cannot avoid to question one of either Jackson's own personality and mentality, or the team culture. The entire situation just seems incredibly bizarre to me. I really don't get it.

Here in WA, fans say exactly the same. โ€œWhy recruit Eastern Staters because they all want to go home after a couple of seasons?โ€ ย Cerra is a recent example. Itโ€™s a lot more difficult for a WA recruit to return because there are only 2 clubs to choose from. In the East there are 15 clubs to pick from and plenty with salary cap space.

Not too bothered either way,as long as we're well compensated. If he leaves,it won't cost a flag or 2.

Gazza left the Cats and they won another flag

Rance retired and the Tigers won another 2 flags

Buddy left the Hawks and they won another 2 flags

ย

The above are 3 superstars of the game and leaving/retiring didn't change their clubs chances of winning future flags,LJ is nowhere near the player of the above three

Buddy was a Demon supporter growing up,maybe LJ'S money could snag Bud for 2 years.I still can't believe we gave BB 4 years FFS!!! Our time is the next 3-4 years,i'd take Bud in a heartbeat,Browns x 2,Weid and Tmac aren't the answer,c'mon Bud.

ย

Thanks for coming into my office Luke, please take a seat

ย

Now Luke,we believe your progressing very well so far,and that 15 minutes in the GF,Faaaarrrk me,nice grin Luke but let's get serious for a moment shall we.

ย

In front of you is a 7 year contract, yes we're handing out 7 year contracts a lot lately.

ย

Sign it Luke, here, use my pen OR

ย

North Melbourne will take you in the preseason draft Luke.

Melbourne or North Melbourne next season Luke, what do you think Luke?

You're sure of that, are you?

I can understand why - I mean if you were able to go back home on equivalent or more money, close to family/friends etc to a strong team then why wouldn't you? Especially after already winning a flag?

The AFL should change the contract rules so club's get 4 years out of their draftees because as it stands 2 years is ridiculous for an 18yo who won't come into his prime until he's 24/25.

To be fair to @old55 the team has been doing that all year. Bailey is a prime candidate for burning team mates.

But there have been multiple other examples all year.

I agree on a longer initial contract for interstate players just to give them a chance to settle in. And will make them more honest in interviews about if they actually intend to be part of the clubย

"offically"???

You need to post better than this and context.
To Whom, is it signed?ย  Is he leaving Australia,.....?

If not then its absolutely not official.

Is it subject to a suitable trade etc.?

Please advise better than the above.

No need to be so narky D11.ย  There have been lots of posts saying he is gone where the poster implies they have inside knowledge or use the word official loosely.ย ย ย  It's unreasonable to say 'officially' until it is announced by the club or player. And it is reasonable to ask anyone posting the basis for their statement. If by 'offically' you mean you have a reliable inside source that tells you it has happened, you should simply say so.

For those who like conspiracy theories the 3 players from the 2019 draft were automatically given the standard 2 year contract on being drafted.

IIRC at the end of 2020 all three were offered fresh contracts taking them to the end of 2023.

LJ finally elected to only agree to a two year extension whereas Rivers and Pickett extended for the full offered term.

How long has the WA fix been in? Most of us assumed the pressure would come from the WCE but was it Freo all along?

That's the problem with recruiting Western Australian players, the go home factor is stronger than other states

We have a few:ย  Rivers, Kozzie, JVR, McVee

With Jackson there is a lot of good draft picks tied up in them albeit McVee is an NGA rookie.

Lets hope they don't all want to go back any time soon.

Whatโ€™s the bet Jacko is BOG this week just to ensure some credibility with his future teammates given his rather ordinary performances so far this year.

The club or player wonโ€™t announce it until seasons end and as an interested supporter as many others are, I got the mail and was happy to pass it on.

I had mentioned already that official was probably the wrong word used but Iโ€™ll choose how much info I pass on.ย

Both Kosi and Rivers are in relationships which really helps.ย

Anyone ever held out this long and not left?

Yep

I suspect he or his management had it all worked out. Silly us thought it was just LJ taking a punt that he would be worth more dollars in 2023 than what he was being offered in 2020/21.

We've been played all along

I know but not sure it will be enough if the WA clubs come calling.ย  They are premiership players and JVR shows a fair bit, so fully expect the WA clubs to make some enticing offers.ย

Is Woewodin also from WA?

We will be ripe for poaching, sadly.

On a night of counting, Melbourneย captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles atย Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckmanโ€™s masterclass in the second half.ย  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipperโ€™s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, aย career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested),ย nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.ย
