From the AFL website:

'The McClelland Trophy...[is]...to include the AFLW competition, with...[the]...prize money to be shared between the club and all its players.' [my italics x 2]

So, girls and boys (and 'club').

Goodwin specifically called out the AFLW team and their great season at the BnF. He said he "can smell another flag". Let's hope so, it would really turn around a frustrating year for the club.

This debate seems to be heavily influenced by perceptions of how playing in ASP - most notably the travel, particularly if the following match involves a difficult game, standard-, timing-, and/or location-wise - affects the team's performance.

In this - as in so many other issues! - we 'Landers are prone to 'project' (guilty as charged, Your Honour!) The players' actual views would be interesting.

It wouldn't surprise me, I must say, if they enjoyed the change of scenery, figuratively and literally (particularly in and around ASP) and the stimulation that travel, with friends, provides.

On the other hand, I can recognise the possibility such distraction or stimulation might negatively affect performance. particularly that oft-referred-to '1%'. This should be manageable, however.

I can also recognise supporters' responses to a 'lost' home game, if replacement arrangements aren't equal or better for them.

I am not even sure the AFL Premiership winner received a monetary amount then. Don’t be so precious because you have made a rather outlandish statement when sponsorship was a pipe dream. 

I am well aware that the Dees were during their glory years ( 1954 to 1964 ) multi winners of the McClelland Trophy when Firsts Reserves and Under19’s were included. But a cash donation or prize then really?As you know we had limited chances during our 57 year hideaway only in the1987 to 1994 or in 1998 or from 2000 to 2006 if it was still held then. 

Your assertion has the aura of a very salty fan that is grumpily throwing a toy or two out of your cot. 

Just be thankful our Club is in the box seat in 2023 for this magnificent prize money and is in the hands of our top shelf AFLW women’s team who will give it an almighty shake like they did in the GF at that venue in Season7 and come up trumps again.

Hawthorn did alright and won 3 premierships being in Tasmania. We won a premiership too, in 2021

my point is quite simple

Many Years ago when the Dr. McLelland Trophy was awarded to the Team who was the highest finisher of The U19, Reserves and Seniors in a Season, there should have been a Financial Reward. 
This is for a Competition that pulled 121,000 to a GF in 1970

Where did all that money go??

I have always wondered. Bit like Cricket when Bradman was in charge…

We are becoming a big club despite the decades of being in the wilderness. We live in a national league and should compete on a bigger scale  outside our city, Melbourne. 
 

I suggest the club knows better and will do what’s best for primarily for our success on field and off

Interesting article! Of course there should be some incentive for the boys, but it feels a bit disingenuous to give the boys the same $250,000 as the girls when the money means so much more (and goes so much further for the improvement of) the girls comp!

couple of things

the boys list is larger, so per head payment to girls will be higher

the boys played 23 h&a games vs 10 ... just saying

and finally the club get $500k which they could (hopefully) spend on upgrading facilities etc for the girls

but sure, the girls have a bigger gap to close

Totally agree with this. Most of the girls have day jobs, not because they want to but because they have to. If they didn’t have to work a day job there’d be so much more time to devote to all things footy, just as the boys do now.

Firstly, all 18 clubs have begged the AFL to extend the W season to at least 17 rounds. No club wants a pitiful 10-round H&A season. But that’s a side point.

My main point is that the W play 10 rounds which is 43% of the 23 rounds played by the M. But they certainly aren’t getting paid 43% of what the M are paid.

Even if the $250,000 was split amongst the W players only, they still wouldn’t be anywhere near the rate of pay of the M.

it will count against the AFL's soft cap restrictions

Seems a bit rough on the coaches and support staff, I don't get the rationale for that at all. I really have been feeling like the support staff and coaches deserve a bit more of the pot from TV rights or whatever. The whole show is not taxed and the AFL management are disproportionately rewarded compared to the workers who make it happen. 

So in the end for a player the money is similar to the baby bonus, you can choose talcum powder or a humongous flat screen TV.
